My GOG version of Gothic2 gold runs fine on Win7 with 5770. I also have G1 but I haven't tried it yet.

But they don't work with nvidia cards :(
Yes, if you have an Nvidia GPU you're out of luck with recent drivers; drivers from before the change can be used with older cards, but the latest cards only work with the newer drivers. ATI GPUs will run both games flawlessly, however.

That's ironic in that the latest ATI cards (like my 5770) have major problems with G3. Oh well...

Fixed with the community patch aren't they?
Unfortunately not for 5700 and 5800 series. You can't run shader3 properly and shadows are missing. I've had other problems as well but I'm not sure if they're related. The shader and shadow problems have been acknowledged by the CP team and they are looking for a workaround but it is definitely an ATI driver issue. Not surprising since the 5700 series isn't even supported by the latest Catalyst.

Oh, man! I was getting ready to get a new Win 7 system and was definitely going with Nvidia since I've been having issues with ATI drivers and other games. Gothic is one of my favorites. Is Nvidia working on fixing this?
I can confirm that Gothic 1 & 2 do not work on Windows 7 with the 9400M. They sort of launch and just flash between a black screen and random blips of the starting screen. I tried a number of compatibility configurations and eventually wandered over here. Hope it gets fixed. Picked this up on the Holiday sale and was looking forward to bundling up in the basement for a few days with the Gothics.
This still hasn't been fixed? That sucks, I'm having the same problem with the retail version.
Well, GOG is working on Win7 compatibility, so perhaps they'll be able to fix it.
high rated
Good news for Nvidia users.
In the newest driver release notes (196.21). They acknowledged that Gothic I & II have an open issue. Here is an excerpt from the release notes.
Open Issues in Version 196.21
As with every released driver, version 196.21 of the Release 196 driver has open issues
and enhancement requests associated with it. This section includes lists of issues that are
either not fixed or not implemented in this version. Some problems listed may not have
been thoroughly investigated and, in fact, may not be NVIDIA issues. Others may have
workaround solutions.
Gothic 1/Gothic 2 –there is corruption and the game crashes. [621170]
So hopefully in the next release or perhaps the next beta driver it will be fixed.

This is GREAT News!!!
I went and checked out there release notes to verify, and yes, Gothic 1&2 is there in the notes.
EXCELLENT! Now let's hope they're working on the problem quickly and get it fixed :)
wlfwood, if you weren't anonymous I'd +5 you!!!
No longer Anonymous ;)
I'm posting this info to any boards where I've found complains about it.
PS. I bought the retail version a long time ago, and I've been having to boot into XP in order to play it :-/

I could not get the retail Gothic 1 and 2 to play on windows 7 home premium 64.. I could not play the GOG versions with my GE Force 8400GS, but the GOG versions play if I take the graphics card out and use the onboard video GE Force 6150SE. I can't play the retail versions with the onboard video though. With Gothic 3, the retail version works with onboard video, but not the 8400GS card. Gothic 3 retail with the 8400GS card kept turning all solid colors when I would kill meatbugs . All 3 Gothics play with the onboard video. 1 and 2 GOG versions work and 3 retail works with onboard video. The good thing is that GOG Gothic 2 is the gold version. I haven't played Night of the Raven before, so this was a great extra.
