Aliens
Star Wars (New Hope)
Dune
Event Horizon
Starship Troopers

All classics in their own right. Just hoping the new Alien prequel they're looking to bring out doesn't turn out like the AVP movies.

wpegg: Alien 4 was a cash in. Joss Whedon's scripting couldn't save a blatant money maker. I really don't understand anyone defending it.
Joss Whedon didn't actually script it. What he wrote and what they actually filmed were two completely different things, but since he did work on a script for the film, he gets credited with/blamed for the writing.

wpegg: Alien was a good suspense movie. It was about being hunted
There's a whole lot of subtext in Alien, too.

And it doesn't have Bill Paxton.

Delixe: Two. There are two Alien movies. A character as awesome as Hicks survived.
Serious, are we? Then... Nope, Aliens and Alien3 connect well, like Hicks connects with the support brace/beam.

[yeah, he was awesome, but his death doesn't make Alien 3 less awesome]
[should i write 'spoiler alert' on a 20 year old movie?]
In no particular order
1. Star Wars movies (all of them, yes even the prequel trilogy that people hate)
2. Battlestar Galactica (the original re-edited version of Saga of a Star World)
3. Lost in Space (the new one, I have not watched the original yet)
4. The Fifth Element
5. Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers

Honorable mention: Flash Gordon.

I like Buck Rogers, but we are talking about movies, not television serial here.
1. Alien/Aliens
2. Star Wars (all of them really)
3. Chronicles of Riddick
4. Stargate
5. Predator series

tarangwydion: 3. Lost in Space (the new one, I have not watched the original yet)
Really? Lost in Space? You have a pretty decent list there (especially the Fifth Element) but Lost in Space doesn't really seem good enough to make a top 5 space movies list, especially when there are so many good ones. Maybe Gary Oldman's awesomeness clouded your memory :P.
I can probably substitute Lost in Space with Starship Trooper, maybe. I have not watched that many space movies, and people likely hate a few others I have not mentioned above :-)

EDIT: Maybe Star Trek (2009) should also get an honorable mention.

Needs more MULTI PASS.

Fifth Element i s very deserving of being on the list imo.

Personally for me:

Alien/s
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Fifth Element
The Last Starfighter
Starship Troopers
1) The original Star Wars ~ Can't explain just how deeply this movie impacted my youth.
2) Moon ~ Simply brilliant!
3) Serenity ~ Interesting story & I enjoyed imagining life aboard an independent ship like Serenity
4) Dune ~ Might be biased by being a fan of the novels. Also enjoyed the two recent miniseries
5) Pandorum ~ A zombie movie in space, this one worked for me. Got me wondering a variety of things

Five "off the top of my head" Honorable Mentions

The Chronicles of Riddick ~ Interesting universe, wanted to learn more. Enjoyed the atmosphere
Fifth Element ~ Wacky, eventful, imaginative, fun
Ice pirates ~ Different, swashbuckling fun
Adventures of Pluto Nash ~ Inventive, unique, funny
The Black Hole ~ I was young, the movie was fanciful, and it filled a space between Star Wars release
1. Aliens series (Aliens especially)
2. Star Wars (all of them)
3. Serenity
4. Forbidden Planet
5. Sunshine

Honorable mentions:
Ice Pirates!
Moon
Riddick movies
Dark Star
The Last Starfighter
Starship Troopers

Guilty pleasure:
Jason X ;-)
1. Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back (original theatrical release)
2. Aliens (director's cut)
3. Spaceballs
4. Wall-E
5. The Fifth Element

Honorable Mentions:

Stargate
Pandorum
Moon
Total Recall

What I've found interesting is that a majority of the lists are, basically, just variations of each other. Not that this is a bad thing (especially considering I'm about to add another slight variation), just interesting.

Anyway:

Star Trek II - As much as I enjoyed the reboot, there has never been a better Star Trek movie, and I doubt there ever will
Starship Troopers - Interstellar war that has as much depth and interest as you want it to.
Sunshine - A beautiful, wonderful film
Aliens - Quite probably the best film James Cameron has ever made. If only the same James Cameron was still with us...
Transformers: The Movie - Epic robot body count, pumping 80's rock 'n' roll cheesefest score, and the last time the Dinobots get to be the epic badasses we all know them to be

Honourable mentions go to:
The Last Starfighter
The Fifth Element
Star Trek (the reboot)
Ultramarines: The Movie
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Pandorum
Event Horizon
