I was perusing the CNN website today and came across an article about their top 5 space movies of all time (in honor of the shuttle's final launch). While the list is a decent one, I was thinking we here could come up with something better. Here's what CNN came up with:
1. "The Right Stuff" (1983): “And as I was sayin', whoever controls the high ground of space controls the world.” – Lyndon Johnson
2. "Star Wars" (1977): “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...” – Title card
3. "Aliens" (1986): “Get away from her, you bitch!” – Ellen Ripley
4. "Flash Gordon" (1980): “Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!” – Dale Arden
5. "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968): “I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.” – H.A.L.
Honorable Mention:
"SpaceCamp" (1986): “You think you're scared now? Wait till your parents get the bill for breaking Daedalus.” – Andie Bergstrom
"Explorers" (1985): “I’ve waited all my life to say this…we come in peace.” – Ben Crandall
"The Last Starfighter" (1984): “Greetings, Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada.” – Centauri
Personally, I would have given The Last Starfighter more than an honorable mention, it is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies, so here's my list:
1. Star Wars (pre-special edition)
2. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
3. The Last Starfighter
4. Forbidden Planet
5. Apollo 13
Honorable mentions:
The Ice Pirates
Event Horizon
Lost in Space (yes, I know it is a terrible movie, but it is one of my "guilty pleasures")
Enemy Mine
