I was perusing the CNN website today and came across an article about their top 5 space movies of all time (in honor of the shuttle's final launch). While the list is a decent one, I was thinking we here could come up with something better. Here's what CNN came up with:

1. "The Right Stuff" (1983): “And as I was sayin', whoever controls the high ground of space controls the world.” – Lyndon Johnson
2. "Star Wars" (1977): “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...” – Title card
3. "Aliens" (1986): “Get away from her, you bitch!” – Ellen Ripley
4. "Flash Gordon" (1980): “Flash, I love you, but we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!” – Dale Arden
5. "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968): “I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.” – H.A.L.

Honorable Mention:

"SpaceCamp" (1986): “You think you're scared now? Wait till your parents get the bill for breaking Daedalus.” – Andie Bergstrom
"Explorers" (1985): “I’ve waited all my life to say this…we come in peace.” – Ben Crandall
"The Last Starfighter" (1984): “Greetings, Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada.” – Centauri

Personally, I would have given The Last Starfighter more than an honorable mention, it is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies, so here's my list:

1. Star Wars (pre-special edition)
2. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
3. The Last Starfighter
4. Forbidden Planet
5. Apollo 13

Honorable mentions:

The Ice Pirates
Event Horizon
Lost in Space (yes, I know it is a terrible movie, but it is one of my "guilty pleasures")
Enemy Mine

1. Sunshine
2. Aliens
3. Serenity
4. ------
5. Star Wars 5
Alien/Aliens, one of them has to be there.

Also, I'd throw Wall-E in there too.
I think the CNN list is pretty good. Here's my top 5:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. Star Wars: Episode I... eh, I mean Episode IV
3. Alien
4. Star Trek II
5. Forbidden Planet
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
2..Serenity
3.Alien
4.Aliens

I'l give you my top 100

If it has to be a single movie then

1. any part of Aliens
2. nothing
3. nothing
.
.
.
50. still nothing
.
.
.
100. ...aaand nothing

BUT if it can be TV series then replace Aliens with "Space: Above and Beyond". I prefer it even more than Aliens. That's all.

Yeah, you've guessed it, I do not like sci-fi much.

Oh, and the one with the hot whatshername who goes to the asteroid to blow it up?

Hmm... space movies... movies set in space... WALL-E?

Space Cowboys with Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and Clint Eastwood. The other one could be Deep Impact or Armageddon.
Are you guys sure you mean AlienS and not Alien?
Aliens is the sequel to Alien, many like Alien better, but always get it wrong.
If you own the quadrilogy then that's even what's on the DVD cover of part two.

Space Cowboys and Armageddon respectively.

I liked Armageddon when it came out but now that I think about it, the movie was just absurd. Stupid be be a good film but not outrageous to be a cult classic.

Space eh?

1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
2-5: Other star trek movies preferably II, II, IV, VI, VIII, XI.

V, VII, IX, and X aren't bad either though.

Flash Gordon? Nah I prefer Flesh Gordon :p

If Lexx had a motion picture, It'd probably be on the list. If we're doing a top five space tv series it's definitely on the list.
