So I'm playing Fallout 1, having a blast of course, it is a GREAT GAME after all, one of the best ever. I even did something this playthrough I had never done, and that was wiped out that whole Raider camp early in the game (rescuing Tandi). I had ALWAYS solved that quest using non-violent means before, being so early and weak I figured it was the only way. But I guess I really generated a good starting character this time because I kicked some serious Raider ass.

But, tonight, I was reminded of my number one pet peeve with the game, as it happens often enough, and yet I had forgotten and also being so into the game had forgotten to save for about an hour and it happened again..... And that thing is where your character walks into a confined space and one of your followers walks right up next to you, thus blocking you. No. Way. Out. I actually just let the game sit for over an hour hoping he would move (Ian) but nope. I thought about shooting him (LOL) but decided no, partially my fault for not saving for so long.

But this annoyance happens ALL THE TIME in Fallout 1, and when you have to replay hours because of a game glitch (as opposed to dying which is 100% my fault) then that's enough to keep it from competing for number one game all time on my list. If it weren't for that, this game would compete for that title IMO.

Just so frustrating. But still a really great game.

What's your number (edit) TWO complaint about Fallout 1? (WBGhiro correctly points out everyone's number one complaint.)

Doh, YES, that should be EVERYONE's NUMBER ONE COMPLAINT.

My bad.

Wish I could edit the title to number two complaint.
Randomly getting into combat with Jet addicts. It turns a five minute visit into a five hour facepalm.
I'd shot him. If you finished off the raiders camp already, you don't need him anymore.
It's a wasteland, be ruthless!

There was an idea on NMA forums to port Fo1 to a Fo2 engine but it's complex and I don't think it managed to go anywhere. It would certainly help with a lot of little issues like this one, the one with money (click, click, click), fellow NPCs who don't level up and die in late game, etc.
I always die at the first ants/scorpion enemies at the start of the game. I have yet to get past that. :P
If I recall correctly there is an action that lets you move other characters away from you, you have to click on them with the right mouse button and click on the hand, I'm not 100% sure though, that might be only possible in Fallout 2.
Anyway, my number one complaint is the fact that you can't keep playing after the end, while in the second one you can do whatever you want after the credits.

It was too short (I played F2 first)
It has the same music tracks as F2..(or vice versa - whatever)

I assume "the one with money" meaning anything that costs over 999 caps??? Because I assume you know, but posting just in case, that you can just type in the amount of caps instead of clicking the arrows.

EDIT: Although it would be nice if they had a button to automatically "balance" all trades, so that I don't have to constantly do math. LOL

There were a couple of negatives. Group AI, of which you mentioned one example, is perhaps the biggest complaint in the game. It never bothered me too much - was only an annoyance on a couple of occasions. Eg, if a party member walks into your intended line of fire. The other issue was : managing your party members' inventories. Other than that, thought that the game was perfect. Along with Fallout 2, still the best rpgs I have ever played (and I first played them a good 10 years after they were first released)

I also try to kill the raiders at that camp in the beginning. Its the fastest way, I think, to get your hands on a SMG. Then of course you are in business : Burst at close range!
And I though that would be one of those "I went to that dangerous zone and everything seemed to be fine so I saved my game but then I turned out I got irradiated and now I have to start from the beginning because I didn't use multiple saves" rant ;P I'm glad to be mistaken :D

I've played the game many years ago but what pissed me off on regular basis was the stupidity of NPCs. They were using a gun and everything was fine. When they ran out of ammo they switched for a knife. If I gave them some ammo later they were still using that bloody knife! The only way to prevent it was to give them some ammo before the switch. I'm not sure if GOG version still have this problem, it's quite probable that there were some patches fixing that but I played one of those early versions of the game and I didn't even know back then that patches are released regularly.

Yeah, 999 is never enough, but maybe it was done to discourage people from buying too much stuff with caps.
After all, it's a wasteland, you should trade junk for junk!

I actually get a SMG before that, but now I can't remember where LOL. Was it when you go back to Vault 13 maybe??? I dunno, I just know I usually do get that fairly early. And then sometimes, due to my character build, I'll give said SMG to Ian, who promptly and often uses it to kill me. LOL. (Not because he's aiming at me, but because I'm close enough to his LOS to an enemy that I get blitzed with multiple SMG hits.)

I didn't give him the SMG this game. LOL.
Probably the fact that it got released too early, so now being of the younger gaming generation its graphics look "a bit" outdated since I didn't grow up playing it (we got our first computer in 2005).

There is a "fix" for that issue, although I'm not sure how long it "sticks." But if you give him ammo, or another, better weapon, and then talk to him you can tell him to use his best weapon in the next combat and he will. In this game, I gave him the 9mm mauser you take off Gizmo, and he's been using that, to pretty good effect too, I'll add. He did run out of ammo with the 10mm, after which time he resorted to the knife, but giving him the 9mm and ammo and telling him to use his best weapon has worked so far. *knock on wood*

On a sad note, Dogmeat is already dead. I think this is the earliest I've ever had him killed, but he's always killed at some point for me. Usually because he walks up to opponents and I'm using grenades. LOL
