Ergo the pirates (actually hackers is probably more accurate as a term since they do not sell things. Besides many of these groups formerly were part of the Amiga Demo scene) are actually providing a valuable service to the consumer and the community at large. As long as there are people trying to do something draconian so that you have to play it the way they want you to there will be someone there to fix the situation.
You can't beat piracy. At all. We've had the "put tchotchkes in there" discussion. And to some degree it works. However I'm vastly more likely to buy a drm-less game than one with it.
