Sachys: they were both just a bit like HOMM

JudasIscariot: Eador: Genesis?
It's like HOMM

...did anyone see the word "NOT" in the title? o___O?

jamotide: What, they are nothing at all like Homm, they are remakes of the old Fantasy General games.
Meander over landscape fighting things occasionally. take over settlement, meander more. bore the fuck out of yourself in the process: sums up HOMM to me! ;)

Telika: Also : Battle for Wesnoth, a fantastic high quality freeware.
did try that, but could never get into it for some reason. may give it another go someday

Various of SSI's old stuff (though they didn't exclusively make "Strategic Simulations" even if it was their name)?
Battle Isle?
Nectaris?
They are not like that at all, settlements are just strategic points like forts, its all battle, no meandering, no meandering more. Panzer General is nothing like Homm.

I didnt mention Panzer General.

And Fantasy Wars was full of meandering - for me.
I recommend

WarlockLord: Nectaris?
Havent actually heard of that one before.
You know what, I had decided to not recommand the Battle Isle series because the originally joystick-based interface has aged horribly, but I totally forgot that the pack includes Incubation. And Incubation is awesome even by modern standards.

Yeah but I told you that Fantasy wars is a remake of Fantasy General and that is almost identical to Panzer General, come on!

Sachys: Yeah... I'm one of those people who cannot stand HOMM, AOW etc. Pretty much nothing about the games appealed to me.
You're similar to me - once in a while I'll be in the mood for HOMM or AOW but for the most part I find they tend to drag on and become a bit tedious. If you're looking for some turnbased goodness mixed in with a wonderful story and a fun "Oregon Trail" vibe

The Banner Saga - awesome, awesome game.

Close to this is Expeditions: Conquistador - though a bit less story. I can't agree that it's close to King's Bounty (I couldn't stand KB either - I feel bad because I actually won it during a VERY fun and intense giveaway of Wpegg's where we "bartered" code fragments to race to win any of several games. On the plus side, I DID have a blast "playing" the giveaway - it was more fun than the game I thought I'd enjoy as I went in trying to win KB - go figure!). Regardless it's a fantastic game in a setting that's different from the usual fantasy worlds of such titles.

One I'm waiting to grab on GoG - Jagged Alliance 2. All these games put much less emphasis on "grand strat" and empire building, more on RPG-lite aspects and some choose your own adventure type goodness.
Well, ummm, Master of Magic is certainly nothing like HoMM. For starters, the battles can be set to auto-resolve, they don't take as long, you have two worlds you can explore, you can cast debilitating spells at your opponent's cities, you can cast overland spells, capture nodes....
But he did not want 4x either...

and I've already got it. Heheh!

Well, then I am kind of out of ideas as turn-based strategy games aren't my specialty only because most of the ones I know of are basically HoMM-likes :P
