Crewdroog: For the Anime: I know that Attack on Titan is the anime of the hour, but I just couldn't get through it. The middle just kinda wound down way too much for me. Is it worth plugging through, am I the only one that felt this way?
The plot is really weak at some points and strong at others, it's a very... er... I forgot the word... Kinda show.
Yeah
That's about it.
Once they get around to catching up to the manga it might be alot better, depending on how they pace it.

Mrstarker: Oh, and I LOVE Miyazaki!!!!!!
avatar
Jonesy89: Been meaning to get into Death Note for a while; need to see if it is on Netflix. Also, what do you think is a good starting point for getting into Miyazaki?
My first was Howl's Moving Castle. Sigh, so beautiful.

I love the character of Light in Death Note. No idea if it is still on Netflix, as they remove great anime so damn much.

I hear you regarding Netflix removing Anime. I first saw Trigun this summer and fell in love with it. A few months later, and it's been dropped from the catalog faster then a hot potato coated in lava. Same thing happened with Avatar, and they don't even have a page up for Korra; ok, it's technically not anime, but I'm still steamed about it.

Atleast you have Netflix :'(

aw, i'm sorry. Do you need a hug? (said in not mean way) I take it for granted that I have netflix, I just assume everyone does.

Yeah, I had gotten away from watching anime (i go in spurts) and I went to find some of the shows I was part way through and saw them gone. So sad.
Wow... This one brought out the crazies.
I'll try not to dwell on that too much. This is a GA, it is supposed to be fun. Keep up the awesomeness, ddickinson! You are like a terminator programmed for love and generosity! +respect

I'm obviously not entering, as you can probably tell by my screen name, but I was invited to discuss if I wish - and I wish it.

My favorite genres -
1 - First Person Shooter
I'm generally not into all the Call of Duty, Halo, and Battlefield type games (an occasional exception pops up, though.) Most of my favorites are open world, and/or have some RPG mixed in. I love exploring in games, and my favorite way to explore is in a free roaming, first person perspective.
This is kind of a weird reason for liking these games... I have pretty bad agoraphobia. For years, I haven't been able to take a step outside without panicking. Playing first-person open world games has been kind of a nice way to explore without actually going out.

2 - Real-Time Tactics
I define it as RTS without base-building and resource management, and with an emphasis on unit positions. I used to prefer more "traditional" RTS games like C&C, but they got boring after a while.
I have had a fascination with the American Civil War since I was a kid. Eventually, I found Sid Meier's Gettysburg, and have been in love with RTT ever since.

3 - Adventure
Point and click or text. Both are great. Everything up until about 2000, and then some recent indie games (Wadjet Eye games are the most obvious ones.)
What can I say? Sometimes I just want a good interactive story. It was my first genre that I played on PC, over 20 years ago. So I guess there is a sentimental factor there.
avatar
Jonesy89: Ah, this must be the "simple math and logic" you were referring to. Well, I will grant you, it is simple, if by "simple" you are implying some deficiency in its mental faculties.
I thought it is quite obvious the amount of variable concerning these 2 giveaways is infinite. I'll point it out next time. Noted.

avatar
Jonesy89: Setting aside that you just pulled your statistics of the breakdown of the gender of members of this forum... Actually, no, let's start there. Without any hard data to work with, how are we to know that it isn't the other way around? I see your argument about the audience older games might have attracted (*might* being the key word), but it is worth pointing out that GOG also sells more recent games that might appeal to a wider market that might include females.
This is one of these variables, although I will too point out the indie market is not as big as old fanbases of classics. Again, these fanbases most likely contain both genders, but the ratio is greatly disproportionate. It's not a 1:1 ratio, as much as you would want it to be. For indie games there could be an argument that it is 1:1, at least here on GOG, given the fact it is now both socially acceptable and encouraged for females to play games (kind of ironic when you look at Californian politicians trying to lower the interest in video games).

avatar
Jonesy89: At the end of the day, we simply don't know the gender breakdown of the GOG forum users. The responses from posters might help give a rough idea, but since the sample will be composed of an entirely self-selected sample who happen to stumble onto the thread, the sample's usefulness to that end is questionable; I mean, how many people might not enter the GAs, read their threads, read the community section of the forums, or just flat out avoid the forums entirely?
I never based my assumptions on the posts from users. It doesn't give even a rough idea of current users. Too many variables to consider. To be more precise: Someone can post something on the forum occasionally, but hasn't posted anything in a few months. However, that certain individual has lurked around and still follows the forum. In such a situation you don't know how to classify that forum member, given the fact you don't know he's a lurker. He's still there, and he can stumble upon your giveaway, but for you it is improbable. The possibilities are endless. We can consider and assume anything, but the range of accuracy as far as the calculations go is huge So I decided to base my calculations on an anthropological argument, so I used how society used to view gaming simply because it seems as a more stable assumption to me. GOG's classics appeal has been around for years, while the indie one just recently emerged. While there is the possibility of a huge wave of women to have joined the community as a result of this bigger focus on the indie scene, the data is hard to come up with. You'd have to set a few limits like how long has it been since someone has posted, then count the number of people that has posted in a time interval you decided upon, then decide on the error margin of the data with the risk of being very inaccurate. Yes, this would've potentially provided a better result, but, again, the possibilities are endless. One user can be active today, and then stay away from the forum for month due to an emergency.

avatar
Jonesy89: Secondly, if there was a single giveaway that encompassed all of the forum members, *everyone* would have a lower chance of winning. With two separate ones, one for each gender, the odds of winning go up for members on each side now that a sizable portion of the competition has been cut. Is there something I'm missing here?
Yeah. You're totally missing the point of equality and how separation might provide benefits for 2 parties, but one benefits a great deal more than the other. It's like an economy boost. It benefits the poor, but it benefits a lot more the rich, who have the resources to get a lot richer. My point isn't that this is unfair, my point is that I can see why others see this as unfair. However, the simple excuse that there is another giveaway separate for males is not a viable justification for saying this giveaway is fair. I would rather take a reason like getting some interaction with the women on the forum and that there is another giveaway for men in order to avoid discrimination, than blatantly saying this giveaway is fair as far as chances go because there simply is another for the different demographic.
It's like saying that Separated but Equal was a fair thing in American history because the government provided for both demographics. That's not an efficient point of view.
Since this thread is now about anime: the most wonderful anime series of all times are Nils Holgersson and Heidi, anyone who says otherwise is cruel and evil and I suggest you repent immediately!

Here my personal list of favorite anime from Elmofongo's thread:

I forgot to list Pinocchio which is absolutely wonderful as well.

I KNOW THIS ONE! I used to watch it when I was 3 or 4. The name always skipped me. Thank you for providing this.

However, I never heard of this one.

Nils Holgersson was translated into many languages, here's the Romanian opening:

This series = pure nostalgia, but I watched several episodes again recently and it's grown on me, I like it every bit as much as when I was a kid.

Heidi was immensely popular in the German speaking countries, it has been translated into a whole bunch of other languages too, not sure if there was a Romanian version. Here's a variety of different dubs:

Crewdroog: I ask this of everyone: have you seen Berserk? If not, I highly recommend.

Actually, I think you are right, the anime I tend to watch I think is from the 90s and early 2000s, not much from today. I enjoyed Darker Than Black, Death Note and Mushishi (very strange, yet beautiful anime) and have watched half of Attack on Titan.

Oh, and I LOVE Miyazaki!!!!!!

Mrstarker: Check out Naoki Urasawa's Monster. It takes a while to get started, and it's very serious, but I rate it higher than Death Note even, and I'm extremely picky about anime. Also, Psycho-Pass is the hot new kid on the Anime block.
Wow! Someone that heard of Monster. And actually liked it. Also, very picky when it comes to anime, but i do watch popcorn stuff to relax:)

As for Mushishi, that was a new series this year that i have yet to watch. The sad thing is that quality in anime went down in the last 10 years and the adult themed ones became very rare. Looking forward to the second season of Psycho Pass.

Would also recommend Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Eden of the East from the newer anime series.

Oh yes, I remember this cartoon. Definitely one of the most unique ones that I watched at that age. An rewatching the intro now I noticed how well the animation holds up.

Nope. I don't think this one ever made it to us. It may have, but I don't remember. This being said, I didn't like the Arabic dub. It was.... I don't know.... it didn't fit the apparent themes or style of the cartoon.

Hmm, the Mushishi that I watched was older. If there are new ones, I'd like to see them. thanks for the heads up.
