I think "A nightmare on Elm Street" is more of a halloween film than "The Exorcist", it is scary fun instead of scary scary.

But I'm a bit biased as "The Exorcist" kind of traumatized me. For years after seeing it I was afraid of being possessed, I slept while touching a wall to make sure I was not levitating and would cross my mouth while yawning to prevent a demon entering. I was very superstitious back then. I'm an atheist now and I have seen the movie once more but I'm still not a big fan of that type of movies. Other than that I love horror/fantastic movies.

darthspudius: My local cinema's are showing these films on Halloween... now which horror classic would you choose?!
Nightmare on Elm Street - nothing beats watching Johnny Depp getting butchered :-)

An atheist?
Somebody call an exorcist, we have a hard possession case here!

=D
Let me explain my earlier post because I realize it sounds kind of mean. I love NOES but comparing it to the Exorcist is like comparing a go-cart to a Ferrari hence I was merely trying to imply in a silly way that it is a repulsively silly question. I don't want anyone to actually slap the OP. Feel free to slap me all you want.

They can try slap me all they want, they won't enjoy the reply! :P

The Exorcist.

Only three films have ever scared me and they are The Exorcist, Event Horizon and Alien. So it's a no brainer for me which to watch on the big screen.
Good list. :)
As said, Nightmare is a scary fun type of movie while The Exorcist is a scary scary type of movie. It's a tough choice though, but I think I'd go for The Exorcist, especially if I can get someone who hasn't seen it before to come with me (which is a super fun thing to do).
Event Horizon scared the hell out of me too. Specifically the part when I realized I paid 7 dollars to see that piece of shit. Oh my god, the terror!

:P
If it's the director's cut of The Exorcist, you should definitely go for Elm Street.

I've never actually seen all of The Exocist, mind you. I tried watching the director's cut on DVD once, but it was so mind-numbingly boring that I had to switch it off after what seemed like an eternity, but in reality was probably about 40 minutes, during which nothing much had happened.

Is the Director's Cut the ones with the "subliminal" images such as:

Spoilers

That one seen when the women came back home and after a short black out and when the lights came on, an image of that creepy face pops out and than vanishes.

That's it. It also has the "crab walk" down the stairs.
I for one love the Directors Cut but Wishbone seems to speak for the majority. For whatever reason it's heavily criticized but it's definitely my favorite.

Criticized? Thats what made it scary in the first place, how lucky for me that I rented the Director's Cut when I saw the film for the first time.

Well, people have different tastes, you know. Here are a few horror movies I've enjoyed:
The Descent
The Uninvited
Pulse
Sinister
Paranormal Activity 1/2
The Thing (1982)

The Descent may very well be the most underrated horror film of all time. I watch so many of them that I have become so critical and jaded by them, but that one still scares the piss out of me. Add to that it's just well done ie no sets falling apart and good acting.

The '82 Thing of course is a classic. ANY fan of the genre will tell you that is an iconic movie.
