tinyE: Is Cube the movie where they are trapped in the box that keeps changing? I think I saw the sequel a few years ago; brilliant concept and I enjoyed it but I considered it more sci-fi suspense than horror ie in the vein of a Logan's Run as opposed to an Alien.
That sounds like it. There was both a sequel and a prequel AFAIK, but I haven't seen any of them because the first one was so thoroughly awful. It's weird though. It could have been an excellent movie with some proper actors and direction. I don't recall any other movie where the only thing ruining it was the acting. Usually it's a combination of several things.

Tarm: Few films I think really get the atmosphere right and connect to some primal inner fear (For lack of a better word and explanation.). One other is the original Ring. That's one creepy film. Especially if some friends of you anonymously drop a burned copy in your mailbox. :P

Wishbone: Again, different strokes for different folks. I hate the original The Ring (Ringgu). It was okay up to a certain point where the plot took a left-hand turn into La-La Land. After that I couldn't take it seriously anymore, and it stopped being scary, just ridiculous.
True that people have different taste in films. I've never had problems with supernatural horror and exaggerations doesn't bother me too much either so I didn't feel as you.
Exorcist, for sure.

"Do you read Sutter Cane?" is a quote from John Carpenter's "In The Mouth Of Madness" (1995).

Exact, it is one of the best horror movies I've seen and I've seen many.

Got to be exorcist for me and one thing i love about it is the music which really suits the film
"The Exorcist" or which horror classic? ;-P
I'm a big fan of Freddy so I'd have to go with "Nightmare on Elm St". Never ever see the new one though. I left the theater livid. That one was so bad I swore I'd never go to the theater ever again.

Though, "The Exorcist" is the scarier of the two. I just can't get past the superstitious idea of the devil actually existing, which is really frankly silly. Any want to see it fades under the basis in religious thinking required in order to really get the most out of it. Pass.

My top picks would be that and the following :
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 or the 2003 remake. Both are good for different reasons. And "The Beginning")
- Wolf Creek
- Phantasm 2
- The Thing (1982)
- [REC]
- The Wicker Man (1973)
- Any George Romero or the "Dawn of the Dead" remake. I suppose "28 Days Later" deserves mention.
- Zombie
- Evil Dead (1981)
- Dagon
- Dreams in the Witchhouse (Masters of Horror episode)
- The Crazies (2010)
- Certain episodes of The Outer Limits crossover into horror, such as "The New Breed", "Mind Over Matter" (starring Mark Hammill), and "Simon Says" to name a few.

Lesser mentions to :
- Deadgirl (2008) (Genuinely horrifying for nontypical reasons)

In a list where top horror directors were polled, TCM and Exorcist came in at the top. In another, both NOES and Exorcist came in.
