Bad news.

I was planning to get a Oculus headset, but now i'm not so sure. Hate when good technologies get bought out by grubby mega-corporations.

Damn Facebook. Now i really hate them >:(

Fever_Discordia: Aren't Valve making one too?
No, they were supporting Oculus Rift, not developing a VR of their own.

cjenkins8855: Yes, Valve is making their own VR kit.
Actually these were just rumours. Valve had already confirmed that they were backing Oculus Rift, at least until now.

It will probably still be a weird PC gaming VR thing for a while, Facebook just expect it to grow into much more after that.

Personally I don't see it. Mainstream customers don't want to wear weird headsets.
Not so sure that I'm happy with this. What if they have a hidden Snow Crash virus in the headset?
I'm very skeptical about Facebook purchasing Oculus. I'm affraid they might drop the focus on gaming and shift it towards communication or whatever. This really doesn't look good, and i was very excited about the Oculus Rift. Oh, well, Sony's VR seems like the only thing we have left.

I'm glad i didn't back the KS project for Oculus, if i had i would be extremely pissed by now.

mushy101: This, this is surreal. Instagram and whatsapp I coud get my head around, but a VR tech hardware company?? FB immense strength is in software, not hardware.

I had hoped to buy the thing once it was fully user ready, but thinking of all the ways FB will turn the extremely promising product into utter shit, sony's VR headset looks like the better option.

Niggles: Purchase of whatsapp was for the user base i would guess :/., Latest updates are forced, certain options not working, although they added a useless privacy option(in this case). Why cant they just leave things alone???. And latest facebook messenger forces you apparently to link mobile number to it (im keeping multiple backups of the older versions ). I dont understand the reason behind latest purchase except maybe on the whim of Mr Zuckerberg. This is coming from a regular facebook user (notice...not a fan as much)
Yeah, the whatsapp acquisition was all about the userbase, that I would agree with, and that's what made me get my head around the silly amount of money fb put into the deal. Having the info of 450 million users at your fingertips is enormous profit potential for a company like FB.

I feel sorry for the kickstarter backers though. The fucking thing isn't even in the hands of consumers and they have already sold out to a megacorp.

If, IF the product was failing AFTER being properly launched and they had to sell out to capitalize on the potential, then fine sure, get brought out. But a kick starter funded product selling out in the development stage? Poor, poor form.

Now Facebook will send your iris scans to the NSA.
Well, there goes any chance that I'll ever buy an Oculus device. No interest in supporting facebook or Zuckerberg. Luckily, there are other VR projects out there.

That's pretty much the way i feel as well. Oculus Rift and all its clones stink of "technocracy", the pursuit of technology for technology's sake. Some technophiles will buy it, but that's all the success it will have. Reminds me of Google Glass: everyone was upset how Google would be able to monitor your every step, but I just told them to calm down, no one would want to wear such a thing anyway.

Now, this is quite interesting:

What? Aww, wow, that's really disappointing. Can Facebook just go and die please, that shitty thing is really getting on my nerves.

MaximumBunny: I think it's a smart acquisition by them. The applications are endless and they need something fresh. ^^

Smannesman: I'm not so sure.
It's more of a gimmick at the moment than anything else and I'm not convinced the user base really exists to make this purchase interesting. But only time will tell I suppose.
Agreed. This reminds me of 3D TVs. Remember when you had to have one? Now no one remember that they exist. (Unless you bought one, of course.)
By the way, does this mean that John Carmack works for Facebook now? He just left Bethesda and now he's working for a much worse company. Oh shit.

No, not really. In my experience, nobody ever gave a shit about those.
Thats surreal imo. The founder of Facebook, which has made 0 (Zero) profit buys a company whose only product is still
in development for 400 million cash and 1.6 billion in shares.
