anjohl: I had to turn it off halfway through the pilot. After years of hearing how revolutionary it's supposed to be, I understood why Fox cancelled it.

Terrible pacing, boring characters, and wooden acting.
...none of which are things that were in the pilot...

did we even watch the same show?
I just can't get over with SG-1.
It was painful.. well after maggyver left but continuum was great.
Firefly? I remember seeing 2 episodes before my life was lost (I mean my TV).. So I have a new hobby. Collecting insects in skyrim.

Yumi: snip...I know that everyone was raving about bsg...snip
Waaay overrated. The show starts out strong but gets off track and goes in a bizarre direction as the series progresses. Some interesting situations are set up, but the show chickens out of dealing with several of them. Most of the characters lose my sympathy at some point. Just like DS9, the writers gets themselves into a corner towards the end of the story and rely on divine intervention to resolve the plot. I tend to blame Ronald Moore (a producer and writer on both if I'm not mistaken) and suspect he must have some sort of odd fascination or obsession with divine intervention.

I should probably note, tho, that my opinion might not be typical: I'm one of those seemingly rare people who think that the early seasons of DS9 were better than the later Dominion War crap. ;-)

For a sci-fi TV show, it was pretty good. I liked it alot better than Battlestar remake. I had a chance to watch the movie finale SERENITY and i really liked it. The movie tied up most of the loose ends. Had some good special effects for a low budget movie and they did it for the fans.

orcishgamer: Also it's awesome. Our Mrs. Reynolds is one of the best episodes. You'll be terribly sad when it's over (if you can, grab the comic book that spans the time between the television series and Serenity).
I just watched that episode. Yeah, it was fantastic. Really showed off the strong character interaction. And Christina Hendricks was incredibly hot.
i watched it for the first time last month and loved it, and Serenity too

and cant wait for the upcoming comic book too
Well, it took me awhile, but I finally finished the series and the movie. The impression I'm left with is one of wanting so much more. 14 episodes and a movie... perhaps it could have been enough, had they known it was going to be that short from the beginning. Had they made sure every episode contributed something important, and used their time wisely. But that wasn't the case. It really did feel like something that got cut off before it had a chance to develop, not something that was short and sweet. The movie at least gave some closure, but it also made the whole thing feel even more underdeveloped. Like I just got a little glimpse of something awesome, not a full look.

Regardless, I loved it. The worst episodes were merely good, and the best were on par with any number of big-budget movies I've seen. The world and the characters were both remarkably vivid, and I found Whedon's trademark snarky dialogue to be both sharp and witty almost without exception. And the CG... wow. For a TV show from the early 2000s, the special effects were amazing.

The movie did slip up in a few minor ways, but it was also quite fun a fun ride. I just... well, I wish there was more. Maybe I'll check out some of the other shows people mentioned in this thread, now. Which are the most "fun" in your opinion? Should I try out Cowboy Bebop, since I liked Firefly?

Goram thread bump...

jefequeso: And judging by the pilot, it seems really really awesome. Better than many sci-fi movies, let alone most TV shows. I'm really quite impressed. Although I find it a little off-putting that they not only still use ballistic firearms, but use incredibly arcane ballistic firearms. I get that it's supposed to have an old west feel, but still...

orcishgamer: Try and watch them in order (the DVD set is in order, I would assume the BluRay is as well), they showed them out of order when the show launched on TV which confused people. Also it's awesome. Our Mrs. Reynolds is one of the best episodes. You'll be terribly sad when it's over (if you can, grab the comic book that spans the time between the television series and Serenity). EDIT: It's a western in space... so yep, bullets:)
Joss Whedon said in a Reddit AMA that "Our Mrs. Reynolds" is his favorite thing he had ever written. Ever. And it is a good episode!

Wow. Just realized that this post was ultra-necroed.

I don't think Joss said anything in Reddit at the time of that original post. You have good taste, Orcish.

I can never forgive Fox for cancelling this series.
Tried watching it last year. One of my two then-room mates loved the show and I borrowed the DVDs from him. I think I watched two and a half episodes and stopped - I literally fell asleep while watching it. The show just didn't get me hooked at all. For some reason nothing seemed really interesting to me and somehow the wild west theme annoyed me, it made everything so abstract that I couldn't take anything seriously (which is weird because I usually like such weird scenarios). Maybe I'll give it another try one day.
I saw Serenity first (FF didnt air here afaik), told a mate and he then told me about FF, I got the boxset for about €20 in HMV, really enjoyed it.

I don't think they're very similar beyond the misfits in space premise, but yes you should watch Cowboy Bebop. Pretty much the only anime I've ever really enjoyed, and it truly is terrific. At the very least give the pilot a go and from there you should know if the super stylish pace is for you.

They are famous for that, though. Futurama even made fun of them for cancelling a show halfway through the INTRO. (R.I.P. Futurella)

I'm pretty sure they also cancelled Family Guy twice and wound up bringing it back both times. Family Guy made fun of them for that as well. lol
