And judging by the pilot, it seems really really awesome. Better than many sci-fi movies, let alone most TV shows. I'm really quite impressed.

Although I find it a little off-putting that they not only still use ballistic firearms, but use incredibly arcane ballistic firearms. I get that it's supposed to have an old west feel, but still...

Try and watch them in order (the DVD set is in order, I would assume the BluRay is as well), they showed them out of order when the show launched on TV which confused people.

Also it's awesome. Our Mrs. Reynolds is one of the best episodes. You'll be terribly sad when it's over (if you can, grab the comic book that spans the time between the television series and Serenity).

EDIT: It's a western in space... so yep, bullets:)

I love Firefly, and was utterly disappointed when it got cancelled after only the first of 7 seasons that had been written. With regards to the guns: they use both past and future. When inside the ship or on planets, they use traditional guns, and they have special guns for use in the vacuum of space. You'll also notice all of the Serenity's radio systems are wired, food is cooked in an oven, etc. I happen to quite like it that way, but I guess it's a matter of taste.

If you get into it, don't forget to check out the movie too :)

I'm watching on Netflix. Is there anywhere I can go that would tell me the correct order, so I can make sure?

About the guns...it's really only the ballistic guns that bother me. The other things (4-wheelers, cooking on open heat, etc) actually make it seem more visceral and real to me.

Not that the guns are that big of a turn off. It just comes across as a little odd.

Oh, and I most certainly will be sure to check out the movie.
I thought that the show itself was okay but overrated. I thought the movie (Serenity) was awful tho. I'm curious: Do most fans of the show like the film or feel it was a letdown?

Not enough superlatives to describe the show and movie. It's just, just... perfection.

It's been a while since I watched it, so I may be wrong, but I believe they do have laser weaponry, it's just super expensive and not terribly reliable.

The film is terribly sub par compared to the series. I didn't hate the film, but I wish that he didn't seem so all fired desperate to wrap up the story. I guess it's pretty much done as it stood or he'll have to retcon a bunch of shit were he to ever get a chance to continue (I think he's honestly not interested in doing so).

At any rate, great series, pretty good movie, that's my feeling.

The Wikipedia page explains it all, and all the other stuff you can acquire to suck the marrow out of the bones of the remaining story (because you will want to).

Firefly: so much better than Star Wars and Star Trek combined. And no, it's not a troll, it's my opinion. Certainly the best space-op sci-fi show I've ever seen, I felt so disappointed when they cancelled the following seasons (well, after all, it was a Joss Whedon show, so it was bound to happen).

I was personnally in love with the girl mechanic of the spaceship.

And that old Far West feel... man, it still sends shivers down my spine!

The movie was not so good, actually.

Really? That was the one character I found annoying, mainly because her character was just too similar to the mechanic girl from Battlestar Galactica. It was one of very few things in Firefly that felt unoriginal to me.

Star Wars is WAAAAAAAY overrated. At least, I don't find it to be anything really great. Star Trek is...well, it's Star Trek. And yes... the girl mechanic is WAAAAAY cute.

(note that IMDB gives the original aired order, not the right order - the above link is right)

Firefly was awesome. I enjoyed the movie too but it did suffer from "let's get to the end and explain everything in one movie" - not much choice though :(

And for the ballistic firearms - laser weapons exist but are expensive (as said above) and even in the future, a bullet kills someone just fine.

Enjoy :)
Just a word of warning. The movie turned me off to the series. Typical Joss Whedon ending.
@Monsta

I might be wrong, but I think Firefly started 2002 and the BSG Remake 2003, which would make them the original one and BSG the copycat ;).

aww, that sounds not so nice. Still might have to check it out though, just to see everything get wrapped up.

I still have 13 hours worth of episodes, though.
