Rebellious JC Denton or death-dealing Mr 47? What kind of hero will you be today?

GOG.com is proud to announce that Square Enix is the newest heavyweight addition to our ever-growing GOG.com catalog of great games. SquareEnix is one of the biggest publishers of the modern gaming world with almost 30-years of experience and famous releases for every single existing gaming system.

Deus: Ex Game of the Year Edition and Hitman: Codename 47 are the first titles we’re releasing from Square Enix, and they're available today for $9.99 and $5.99 respectively. Both games were originally released by Eidos in 2000, but not a single drop of greatness has been lost since then. Deus Ex is a magnificent blend of remarkable storytelling, RPG customization, and action-packed shooting. With all GOG.com’s heart we recommend Deus Ex for $9.99 as one of the most captivating and rewarding games ever. EVER! Hitman, a demanding stealth/action/planning game, created a now-iconic bald assassin Mr 47. With a vague name and a vague past, Agent 47 at least has a clear goal: eliminate the target at all costs. For you, the cost of Hitman: Codename 47 is $5.99.

There are a few more heroes from SquareEnix, that deserve a special treatment from GOG.com, and we will be announcing them in coming weeks. Today, it’s time to shave your head and buy an AMT Hardballer or wear sunglasses at night and save the world from the Illuminati.

You decide what kind of hero you want to be.

Videotraf: Probably won't happen, as emulating those games needs a PSX bios, which is still copyrighted by Sony, and they won't license any of their ROM stuff for sure. Same goes for Nintendo... :(
The PS1 titles require a PSX BIOS, and this is a moot point for FF7 and FF8 anyway, as EIdos (now Square Enix Europe anyway) were responsible for distribution over this way. This certainly excludes Vagrant Story and FInal Fantasy 9. I have heard, however, that there is a finished PC version of FF9 out there, but its release was cancelled.

For SNES titles, however, there is no BIOS or firmware. The only problem is the "Licensed by Nintendo" message in the games, which can easily be hexed out of the ROMs.
"Dieses Video ist in Deutschland leider nicht verfügbar, da es möglicherweise Musik enthält, für die die erforderlichen Musikrechte von der GEMA nicht eingeräumt wurden."

Translation:

"This video is sadly not available in Germany because it may contain music for which the required music rights have not been granted by GEMA."

Youtube FTW huh?

Outstanding! I already own a disc version of Deus Ex and playing it right now but GOG's version with the added free soundtrack is tempting.

I've never played the Hitman's series so this time could be as good as any.

OMG! Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy VII, XI, Thief! Oh the possibilities!

I <3 GOG
Don't count on emulators guys...

I haven't got much hope for FF7 and 8 , and you want console emulators for games licensed by Nintendo?

Oh god, it's GEMA again.

The video would be for Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night.
The next releases will probably be Anachronox, rest of Hitman series and Legacy of Kain/Tomb Raider games. Later probably we will see Deathtrap Dungeon, Gansters and Invisible War. I wonder if Fighting Force will make it, that was a sweet arcade game and it's a pain to run it on modern systems.

Ash360: Quick guys how do I justify buying Deus ex for a thrid time.
Wait for it to go on sale, then buy it again.

Otherwise DO IT FOR SCIENCE AND GOG.
Yay, hope to see many good games from square enix on GOG :)

jamyskis: You don't. Don't panic - there will be enough people buying this for the first time.
If I only had it on steam I might have gone for it considering the extras but £6 odd is a bit much for a third go. Oh well there will be other GOG's.

FF7/FF8 were reverse-engineered in some bizzare way, if memory serves me good (FF8 was e.g. emulating the PlayStation's memory card etc), but yeah, PC ports of those would be a nice addition to GOG catalog.

About SNES games... erasing Nintendo's copyright? Seriously? It's a common practice for bootleg Famicom games, but you want GOG to make something like that? ;)

DarkMaverik: Really? That was the surprise? Huh... I was expecting something more... Not already available on Steam.

SLP2000: First time DRM free, just saying.
I think people sometimes put too much stock in DRM being a big thing that we all have to worry about. Yeah, it sucks MASSIVELY when Assassins Creed comes out and you can only play it with a constant internet connection etc...

But Deus Ex & Hitman have pretty innocuous DRM if any. I mean, yeah, ok. Your friends can't take a free copy home cus it's on your steam account. But so what? Fighting against DRM shouldn't be about trying to get stuff for free. Every time I've wanted to give a friend a GoG game that I already own, I gift them a copy. I don't just hand them my file. Because I LIKE GoG and want it to make the money it deserves. Same goes for Steam.
Anachronox and the Thief games would be instabuys for me. I hope those come to GOG.

I already own Deus Ex on Steam so don't need another copy of that and the first Hitman game's difficulty is too much for this old man so I'll take a pass on that.

The games themselves are not Nintendo's copyright. Publishers of the day were required to include that statement in their games to show that the cartridge was a licensed cart (as opposed to the unlicensed stuff that, say, Codemasters used to do for the NES).

So Square is entirely at their leisure to do what they want with the games. In fact, NOT removing the "Licensed by Nintendo" code would be a trademark violation.

EA has already done it with EA Replay on the PSP. BOB, Syndicate and Wing Commander all had the "Licensed by Nintendo" messages obscured by the emulator.

If I didn't have Deus Ex and Hitman already on disc, I would have bought the GOG versions in a heartbeat for their lack of DRM. I've experienced plenty of situations where I've been unable to play my Steam games - on a train, at my in-laws for whom WLAN sounds like a public transport network, or when our internet dies (and it does - frequently - as we live in the country).

Not to mention when Steam itself is overloaded during sales periods.

I almost bought that, but apparently it's bug-ridden filth that crashes constantly. I can't confirm that because I obviously didn't buy it after hearing those rumours.

Kyojinmaru: It was time to bring Deus Ex, is a basic game in an old games library.

Omikron release will be a mess, it has the same problems as Dungeon Keeper, remember this, guys.

Max_R: What kind of problems?
16-bit Z-buffer
This is great news, but the first Hitman is kind of rubbish. It still makes sense to release it first, but the Hitman game we're all waiting for it Silent Assassin really. :P
