Rebellious JC Denton or death-dealing Mr 47? What kind of hero will you be today?

GOG.com is proud to announce that Square Enix is the newest heavyweight addition to our ever-growing GOG.com catalog of great games. SquareEnix is one of the biggest publishers of the modern gaming world with almost 30-years of experience and famous releases for every single existing gaming system.

Deus: Ex Game of the Year Edition and Hitman: Codename 47 are the first titles we’re releasing from Square Enix, and they're available today for $9.99 and $5.99 respectively. Both games were originally released by Eidos in 2000, but not a single drop of greatness has been lost since then. Deus Ex is a magnificent blend of remarkable storytelling, RPG customization, and action-packed shooting. With all GOG.com’s heart we recommend Deus Ex for $9.99 as one of the most captivating and rewarding games ever. EVER! Hitman, a demanding stealth/action/planning game, created a now-iconic bald assassin Mr 47. With a vague name and a vague past, Agent 47 at least has a clear goal: eliminate the target at all costs. For you, the cost of Hitman: Codename 47 is $5.99.

There are a few more heroes from SquareEnix, that deserve a special treatment from GOG.com, and we will be announcing them in coming weeks. Today, it’s time to shave your head and buy an AMT Hardballer or wear sunglasses at night and save the world from the Illuminati.

You decide what kind of hero you want to be.
Bad news for who are expecting Final Fantasy VII and VIII. These two games are in the Steam database but inactive (you can see it with ClientRegistry Toolkit). Valve and Square haven't given approval to sell the games because the inestability with new operating systems.

This can change, but I doubt it.

fisk0: No, no, I know that console games can't be expected here, though GOG did have the survey last year that included the question if they should start providing games from other platforms as well, even though that probably isn't feasible in most cases, though Commodore seem willing to license the Amiga kickstart ROM for commercial emulators, so at least the Amiga wouldn't be impossible, a lot less likely with Sony or Nintendo. :)

sajin: I wonder how GOG user feel consumer games in NES and SNES ages, such as DragonQuest, early Final Fantasy,King's Quest.
Moreover, both SQUARE and ENIX started as old Japanese PC game developer. They have original PC games published in Japan with Japanese language.
It's shame GOG have not published not English titles and translated to each other's language.
I think all games be able to run on PC should be covered by GOG.
Would be interesting if they published the games that have fan translations, kind of as-is like PSN's "PlayStation Imports", but with links and instructions in how to get the fan translations to work, like they've done previously with some mods for games like Freespace 2.
Pretty cool that Square-Enix (and by extension, Eidos) has made it onto GOG.com's catalog. So maybe now we can expect to see the following to show up at some point:

Tomb Raider series
Legacy of Kain series
Carmageddon series
Just Cause
Final Fantasy VII & VIII (those ones I'm hoping will show up if they can manage to fix whatever issues are present with them)
Daikatana (kidding....no one wants to see that)
Omikron: The Nomad Soul (GOG's already got Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, so why not?)
Project IGI: I'm Going In (can't have IGI 2 in the catalog and not the first one)
Revenant (it kinda stinks that the product was rushed when it first came out, but maybe we'll see it here anyway)
Project Snowblind

Oh, I think there's enough morbid curiosity to pick it up on a sale!
Great News. Square/Eidos games will be a fantastic addition to GOG catalog.

I'd buy it again, and I already have it from GamersGate. :P
If Anachronox and Omikron aren't a part of this deal with Squeenix (assuming they still retain publishing rights) I'm going to kick a basket full of puppies.
Could this mean we get to see the first legal release of FF VII's PC port in years?!

Hey, a guy can dream
I hope it will bring us Final Fantasy VII and VIII. I'll spend my last money on this games :)
Tomb Raider, any one? I'd be shocked if it's not in the pipeline.

Also, emulation-based ports of the console games SHOULD be possible on a technical level, but even if the rights that GOG has includes the rights to console titles, getting them released runs into all kinds of problems. For one thing, there's no suitable emulator that runs well on a broad spectrum of hardware. While both ZSNES and BSNES are licensed in a way that they could be used as the emulation package, they present issues that make them unsuitable (ZSNES has an intrusive custom GUI and many accuracy flaws while BSNES goes for MAME-type super-accurate emulation and requires powerful hardware to run at full speed) and the one emulator that would work best as an embedded game engine (SNES9x) is licensed in such a way as to make it impossible to include in a package.
When I saw the announcement for Deus Ex in the front page, my first thought was: "Holy crap! Please tell me I'm not dreaming." Actually, this represents an interesting dilemma because I already own the game - for the PS2. It is, however, a vastly inferior version, so I'm really tempted to grab this one. It would support GOG as well.

I'll definitely drop 6 bucks on Hitman, though. Now I'm just hoping for Final Fantasy 7.
I'd buy FF8 immediately!
Althought I'm glad to see GOG's another milesone reached - personally I'm not very excited about Square Enix catalog (at least from the titles already mentioned on forum). Anyway - keep up good job GOG team.

George - it's your turn...
