If you preordered Botanicula on GOG.com or have been paying attention to this quirky adventure game, you very probably heard all of the noise around the Humble Botanicula Debut and how some users were left rather unhappy about paying $8.99 for a preorder of the game while people who bought it on day one could pay whatever they wanted for it and they got more goodies than the GOG.com preorder provided.

This left an unsurprisingly sour taste in some gamers’ mouths, and we were just as surprised by the launch of the Humble Botanicula Debut as anyone else was. As soon as we saw the bundle, we reached out to the guys at Amanita about providing our users with something in return for their preorders; we got them to agree to give us a number of goodies from the bundle, and we’re giving you and every other user who bought the game before 12:00 GMT on the 20th of April will receive a few things. Everyone who bought Botanicula before we published this news will automatically be getting Machinarium to your shelf on Monday, and we’ll be emailing all of those purchasers with links where they can download the full soundtrack and a special artbook of Botanicula designs and character sketches.

Finally, we wanted to give you guys something that you couldn’t get in the Humble Bundle to make sure that you didn’t feel like you got a raw deal. To that end, courtesy of our fine friends at CDP RED, we’re happy to let you know that we’re also giving you and everyone else who already bought Botanicula a free copy of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut! This game will also be on your shelf on Monday, so look for it then.

At GOG.com, we’ll never knowingly disappoint you, and while this preorder mishap may have made you a little unhappy, we hope that you enjoy Botanicula--it’s a fantastic game and many of us here at the office are fans--and, if you’d like to say “thanks!” to our pals at CDP RED, check out The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition, available right now at your favorite DRM-free game store, GOG.com.

Have a great weekend!

--The GOG.com Team
That's why Gog is becoming such a great and well respected company.
Good move Gog. Congratulations!
Unbelievable! You see, this is the difference between GOG and Amanita. Though I did not pre-order Botanicula, I thank you on behalf of all that did! GOG <3
I did not buy Botanicula and have no short-term plans to do so (but maybe in the long run I will). So even though these news do not affect me at all, GOG's effort to please its customers isn't lost on me. Your reputation keeps climbing on my charts. I wish more companies acted like this.

You guys definitely rock! That's why I recommend you to every gamer I talk to.

Expack: While I do applaud this compensation by GOG.com, my question is this: since it seems obvious Amanita failed to notify you of their intentions of parterning with Humble Bundle, Inc. to create the Humble Botanicula Debut, will you be discussing this matter with Amanita in terms of legality and/or ethics?
If it were any other major mainstream company, yeah theyd do that. But this is gog, they understand the situation. Presumeably they distributed the free machinariums with amanitas blessing. Theyr squared away and ready to move on. Launching a suit against an indie developer that was trying to raise money for charity would not be like them.

I know if I were in GOG's position, I would definitely consider suing them for purposeful undermining of our agreement, and I would tell Amanita that we do not appreciate being undercut like this. Of course, given as I, too, am a fan of the Humble Bundles, I wouldn't be as harsh on them as I would otherwise while still reminding them of certain legal elements regarding such actions.
I think the best thing for GOG is to let it all be a lesson and not say another word about it. I fail to see any outcome where lawyering up doesn't end up making things worse.
How could Amanita do bundle mistake? I admire GOG's behavior.
Hey Everyone,
Thank you for your support, that means the world to us.
Because the weekend has begun, I now recommend playing some awesome games, naturally from GOG.com (like I'll do :-).

Cheers!
It is truely a noble gesture to all your customers whether they bought this game or not. I am a happier customer although I didn't buy the game. But I am once again assured that gog will take care of us...

Way to go guys...
I'm impressed. GOG.com team did a wonderful job. I didn't care much about that "pay what you want" thing, since I was pretty happy with the preorder price. But I'd really miss the full soundtrack. By giving it out you made my day. I already have the Machinarium, but will take a look at The Witcher.
Thank you!
I didn't pre-order this game, but what GOG did here to take care of their customers is pretty fucking cool. They could've just said this wasn't their fault and left it at that, but this just shows that they do value their clientele and that they care about their business. Well done. Makes me feel good to be here.

They didn't put enough points into the Business Sense skill? :P

Actually, I really don't care about the "missed" deals. I've got them all already except for botanicula.
But if GOG really had something to make up, I would have preferred just to get the native linux version, since now I still have to buy the humble bundle to get the native linux version.
(Of course, it's adobe air, I should be able to run it already, but it's the platform counter that counts ;-) ).
What would be super awesome is that since GOG was able to offer this great package without any of the users donating to charity, would be if GOG as an agent donated some of the profits from the sale to charity.

I see on the Humble Bundle's main contributors page that a user named GOGcom is #4 of the top donators. If that's official GOG (and I tend to think it is), that's awesome. You guys rock!

I think all parties involved here handled it well. GOG really came through for their users and with some delicacy, and Amanita apologized honestly for their error. I really don't feel that Amanita attempted to do anything underhanded. They probably knew they would lose money more than anything by offering it on the HB on day one. Maybe their charitable heart was in the right place. I think it would've been more acceptable if HB offered it as one of the bonus games after the minimum cost was met.

Anyway, I bought it through HB (sorry, GOG! The charity thing pulled me in!), and I can say that it is a fantastic game. As is Machinarium. Wherever you get/got it, I'm sure you'll be happy.
I don't think guys out there should be upset: if you buy something @ Humble Bundle you REALLY SHOULD pay it MORE.
It's a chance to donate something to charity, not to grab games for 1$... if you pay less than 10/15$ for it, you should really feel a bit guilty ;)

However, even if Gog didn't really have to do something about it, they did.
Well, they're just great ;)

I'm not affected by this, but this way of managing the Botanicula pre-order problem is so cool, so generous, I don't know what to say. I'm not used to see this from a company. I want to support the company, which does such things, so I'm off to buy The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut here because of this. (I always wanted to try it out... :P )

Thank you GOG for showing us that a company can really care about it's customers! I hope this attitude will bring you much more customers! Go, go GOG!
