Red_Avatar: I already made a topic on Steam so it's probably no secret I'm no fan of it: support outright SUCKS, they're even more expensive than Gamersgate but proxies don't work (they found a way to counter that), download speeds are lower for me personally, everything is tied to their Steam software which is annoying, etc.

bansama: If you can work out how to set up and use Amazon's EC2, Valve can't detect it as a proxy =) Unfortunately, I still can't work out how to set it up and while I can find many mentions on the net from Japanese who use it, none provide instructions that make any sense >_<.

It's not that Steam can detect it being a proxy (it can't detect mine) but when it comes to paying, it will refuse any credit card that doesn't belong to that address. It used to work if you lied about your country (saying your credit card was issued in the US) but now they do a country check as well and for some weird reason, if you're an European in the US, you can't buy Steam games as a result.
Also, your Steam account gets tied to a country so you're screwed from the start really. Even if you're a European that moves to the US, it will keep prices in Euros.
There's one side door: make a new account WHILE being under the proxy. Then use that account to buy a game using Paypal (no country check) AND gift the game. This works but I fear it may be risky because if Valve detects this behaviour, it might get your main account closed down.
An easier solution is to use a UK proxy because UK prices are pretty much the same as (or even lower than) US prices. You can still buy a game using a Belgian credit card if you're in the UK -> this is European law :). Then it's even 100% legal!

bansama: I know it's an old thread, but this is most relevant place to post this.
I asked GamersGate yesterday what their plans were regarding download speeds in SE Asia, and they got back to me asking me to test the download speeds of a couple of new games. First downloading from the default servers for SE Asia (which I guess may actually be in Europe) and then from a new server in the US.
The results are quite clear that the new US based server is faster. I've gone from speeds of around 176 kbs to 375 kbs =) What's more, they actually let me keep the new games used for testing the download speeds for free (the new Downfall game and Divine Divinity 2). $80 worth of games for free. That's what I call amazing customer service.
If they can ensure these speeds from the US server for SE Asia, I'll be buying far more from them and far less from Steam.

Wow, that's very cool. I use the other retail services as well, but I own by far the most games through Gamersgate. Very good support.
