I like them, with certain perk, they're a great allies :D

illegalyouth: what's your karma? if you're a "good" character, there's a group that sends out contract killers who want to collect a bounty put on your head. i don't know if there is an equivalent for "evil" characters, since i'm concentrating on good karma in my current game. i've already collected two separate contracts for my head on the dead bodies of groups who have attacked me -- some people called "talon."

Weclock: I know about Talon, but Wolfgang is a trader, he is not supposed to attack unless you've done something.
Yes, there is a group if you've been bad, The Regulators.
To me, that's pretty funny, because The Regulators were a bad group of people.
EDIT:
and yes, there are random encounters, even the traders are random.
I once met a trader with a pet bear (i forget the name of them) who had killed a robot and he was all 'you stay away from my robot!!' and I was walking by it and he was all 'that's it, you're dead!' I tried fighting them off but he absolutely wasted me. At the same spot (this is the meresti station) in an earlier game, I came across a deathclaw at level 2.

Weclock - that example peaked my intrest! Do you hink that trader was 'protecting his investment'? Ie: 'I killed it - the parts are mine!'? because if that's what NPC do if you encroach on their 'loot' that would be a cool thing in the game! :)

ilves: My most random encounter definitely involved the roach king. It's a guy with a mini gun with some roaches. He's got a sweet helmet though. One other time I ran into a scavenger fighting some raiders near a vault entrance, killed the raiders, the scav said 'don't come near me' right when i was going up to talk to him and turned hostile. I happened to have my friendly paladin with a sledge hammer with me and she turned him into mush pretty quickly.
The only time I've seen a deathclaw was when I released one without knowing it at the Enclave Base... I'm kinda happy I was hiding at the moment and he didn't see me. It was freaking huge.

Gosh! Not another example of an NPC acting like 'I klled 'em, I get the loot - back off!' - like Weclock's example - could it be true?!!!!

I do believe this is to be true.

Fantastic! Haven't seen it happen yet - but that does make it a bit closer to the original Fallout's - which is great! :)
It has some annoying bugs.
You can get stuck at some points in the game.
My saving was deleted for whatever reason, I was level 9 aswell...
Oh and upon starting a new game, when I saved it and reloaded, Nathan (of Megaton) spawned about 50 feet in the air and kept dying, I hate having people die when I try and go 100% good through the game, so now I have to start the game YET AGAIN!

i've noticed a similar bug with the people in megaton. in one game, i watched lucy west walk through the floor. she got stuck there, too. when i talked to her, she looked up towards me. when i ended the conversation, she slowly walked up out of the floor. it was a little weird, heh.
I've decided that Fawkes is too cheap. I play on hard and there is nothing I've come across now that I have him that even has a chance to damage me before they go down. Gatling laser gun with unlimited ammo is a bit ridiculous.
My only other issue with the companion system is that it makes stealth gameplay completely moot. You can sneak around and not be seen but your buddy automatically runs in and starts blasting and alerts everyone in the freaking base that there's someone there. It does help get sneak crit hits sometimes, but I like dropping frags into people's pockets, which goes right out the door with a 8 foot mutant blasting everything in sight

I've had other NPC's sneak with me, like Jericho...
I just want to say... I love Fawke's Super Sledge and I loved the Behemoth scene at GNR. That was friggin' epic!

Had this happen to me too. Heard gunfire over a hill so I went to investigate. A scavenger and his dog were fighting a robot. By the time I targeted the bot and killed it (yea, I killed it) the dog was dead and the scavenger had like two bars left on HP. So I walked over to the robot, when the scav runs up to me, points a scoped .44 at me and tells me that is HIS Enclave tech and if I touch it he'll kill me. I almost wasted him just because, but since I am playing nice this time through, I let him have it. Should have let the bot finish the a$$hole... ;)

That's brilliant news! I like my games 'realistic' from that point of view! :)
As I read these post and others I keep thinking ' a modder would have fixed that', then I realise there is no Construction Set for Fallout 3. And with another Fallout game due in 2010 according to Bethesda, I don't see one appearing any time soon!
I also wonder about the 'randomness'. Because every video I have seen (although granted, probably console) where the player reaches the super dup mart, there is a radscorpion attacking a man. When I finally got there - nothing! If it's random, I would have thought I would have seen at least one vid with no radscorpion in front of the Super Dup!!! :)

hmm... maybe the NPC's sneak ability affects their visibility as well. I see the NPC sneaking but as soon as an enemy is in sight they start blasting away even if i'm/they are in sneak mode. My two main companions so far have been the HoS pallie and Fawkes, so maybe they're not the sneakiest of the bunch to start off with... maybe if i went with Jericho he would actually stay hidden.
i think the types of creatures are dependant on what time of day it is, the Radscorps like daytime, and other things like nighttime, or dusk, so it would depend on which time of day whether or not there was a radscopr attacking anyone at the Superduper mart, ive noticed this a lot.
I think it also depends on your karma till that point in the game, as well as numerous other factors, its supposed to be random, but i think 'random' is to broad a term. Depending on your courses of action its making things go certain ways...that make sense?
I tried a God Mode cheat, and used the BBgun to kill a super muty, that was hilarious, and took like 25 minutes :P
