Pheace: weren't people who preordered Elemental/Bought it before a certain time getting Fallen Enchantress for free? Edit: curses, beat me to it xD

oldschool: I only have 4 games listed, Elemental, Sid Meier's Pirates, Eschalon Book 2 and Majesty 2. I guess I didn't get the free game. On their forums, some guy like me, bought the collector's edition but didn't sign-up for the forums and didn't get the game. That's pretty cheesy.
I'm going to assume you might be checking Impulse, which isn't tied to the Stardock system any longer.

You can check here though - http://download.stardock.com

Just an FYI, if you purchase FE from any place but Stardock directly you are getting a Steam key. That's why it's listed as "Steamworks".

You can just download/purchase from Stardock and it's a direct download.

Thanks for the link, but over the last 2+ years I managed to lose my Impulse information. I was forced to make a new password via Gamestop. Again, thanks for the assistance. If the game is good I might pick it up on a future date.
If you contact Stardock's support, they can help you verify that you bought the game within the time limit and give you access to the new game.

I'm enjoying it so far, by the way. Great fun.
Stardock has its own store: https://store.stardock.com/
Is where i'd been getting updates post impulse sale.
Far as i'm concerned, it remains to be seen if copies bought from Stardock will require steamworks, or impulse. brad has history making everything he says subject to change. So for me it be a wait and see.

i think the game looks good. Was getting good back when my system could still play it. Remains to be seen if the final release will play.
I picked it up. I always had interest in WOM of never picked it up.

Haven't played much. The UI's pretty slick, and everything feels pretty good on how it works. Not every 4X game gets that down. I'll give thoughts when I do play more to aid people who may be on the fence.
Been checking out several Let's Plays of this game for a while now. Pretty sure I am going to pick this up at some point. Preferably the DRM free version direct from Stardock...but a Steam sale might convince me otherwise.

They're only giving me a 10 dollar Discount for owning E:WOM... that's infinately more expensive than free.

Edit: seems that I bought it in 2011... I swear it was 2010... Still I'm a bit miffed on the technicality, I wasted money too but I'm unworthy. I'm not buying it, Stardock deserves to rot for their dishonesty.

It's your loss.

Ten dollars saved is a decent deal. The game is well worth $50 to me due to the fun factor and replayability. Btw I also bought E:Wom later and grabbed the $10 discount in February.

If you like 4x Fantasy/Rpg turn based goodness, perhaps keep an eye out for a sale. Money well spent if you ask me.

FE doesn't require steamworks. It's literally just a big setup.exe you download.
I've now put in a serious four/five hours into the game so I can give some thoughts. Most of this might have applied to WOM but I never played it myself.

The game isn't playing around. Unlike Warlock: Master of the Arcane which promised so much and delivered so little, Fallen Enchantress is serious business. I'm currently playing on a small map with three other AI's, and I'm still in the early game it seems. It's like Age of Wonders with the accessibility of a Civilization game. Lots of spells, lots of units, lots of upgrades, etc, etc.

The game is two styles trying to work together. You have the 4X strategy element, and you have the RPG element where you'll build up a few units and use them to eliminate threats. I like the idea, and I think FE does an admirable job but so far I find it a little clunky. Your leader and the other heroes you get end up being your strongest units and managing their equipment gets a little tedious. It also takes away from the grand element of 4X games somewhat. Your character isn't some overseeing god figure. They're just a unit like anyone else.

That being said, being able to customize all your units (you can make your own units even with abilities/items you unlock in research) along with heroes means you can tailor the army to your specific needs. In my current game, I made my leader into a Paladin-tank. He doesn't do a lot of damage but between heals and his armor rating, he's hard to take down. That takes the focus off all my other squishy troops. You can also make your own unique factions. I haven't played with that much but there were plenty of options for that as well.

You can specialize your cities to do specific things which is interesting. A military fortress for extra HP, a research center for more research, or a town for production and money gives you the ability to get what you need from a town given it's position. And the town buildings work sort of like Civ but not entirely. Instead of flat rates, you deal with extensions and percentages, and many of the buildings work on the same things in different ways. A flat 2 increase from one building, or a 5% increase from another; for example (not actual stats from the game).

The battles are strategic ala Master of Magic/Age of Wonders. They're fun, with an initiative bar system so you know who'll act next. Heroes can move, attack, and cast spells which use up your global mana. No casting skill or anything that I've seen. Pretty good variety in monsters and units, with some different abilities. A bear; for instance, can continuously maul an enemy unit until they miss. That can hurt, a lot.

They also seem to have tried to avoid the traditional fantasy tropes. There are races, but no Elves or Dwarves that I've seen. It's possible they're in there but just called something else. You can in theory learn to use all kinds of fantastic creatures with the available resource and alignment. But it seems some are barred from certain races. My humanoid Life based faction can't use an Ogre Lair. Nor can I use a Death Shard.

I've had two issues technically with the game so far. The first is an occasional black screen when I fire up the game. And the second is just odd. My Laptop has an onboard and a dedicated card. When a game is too taxing for the onboard, the dedicated card kicks in. Works perfectly for X-Com or any other really intensive game. FE doesn't trigger the change. Instead, it maxes out the onboard card which runs the game but laggy when it should be kicking in the dedicated card. The only way I've found to get around that is to load the game outside of steam by telling it to load with the Nvidia card. Then it works beautifully.

I'd give the game a positive thumbs up so far. It's easy to play, looks nice, and seems to have a pretty intense strategic element. I'm playing on the easiest difficultly, and the AI is keeping up with me. The game doesn't mess around.

But that's also a flaw. This is aimed at a specific type of fan. The people who love 4X games and have experience with them. If you're not good at MOM, AOW, MOO, Civ, or any other 4X style games, this will eat your lunch. Even with all my experience, the game isn't easy. If you're just a casual strategy game player I don't know if this is the game for you. It could be, but to me; it seems a little too bent towards the hardcore.

But if you like those games, have experience, and don't mind a game that doesn't hold back? Definitely think about picking it up.

What dishonest? They have always said that those who bought it during 2010 would get the next expansion for free. When they abandoned that and started working on FE instead, they said they'd get it for free instead. They NEVER said those who bought it in 2011 would get it for free, ever.

Also not too mention that by 2011, no one should have been purchasing it. When the company has already given a public apology on the game, and there was not a single positive review of the game at the time...that means avoid said game.

It feels like fine print BS and simply put all negative reviews were all Technical stuff and a decent company would have fixed the problems. So instead of fixing it they offer a free version of the new game but with a fine print exception that is telling my that my money is worth less, that my trust was worth less and it's ok, I didn't pirate the game and if it was a company like Firaxis, E:WoM would have been made a working game instead of getting a new game. I am very sick of Stardock talking like they're in the customer's best interest and then having actions that are the complete opposite.

Psyringe: Although the game _should_ be right up my alley (I love turn-based strategy games, I love fantasy settings, I loved playing - and sometimes still play - Master of Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic, Age of Wonders, etc.), I have little to no interest in "Fallen Enchantress" at this point.

There are several reasons for this:

1. The game's predecessor failed so spectacularly, and on so many levels, that I'm now very careful about buying Stardock games. They had earned my trust before (Galactic Civilizations 1 and 2 were some of the very few games that I bought at full price, and they were worth it), but the horrendous, pitiful state of Elemental on release has annihilated this trust pretty effectively.

2. I'm not sure if they have the people to pull off such a project. Signing up Jon Shafer, the man whose design ideas botched Civilization V, as a campaign designer, didn't really diminish my skepticism.

3. According to beta testers, the game is still rough around the edges, and especially the enemy AI feels incomplete and plays atrociously bad.

4. The game is tied to Steamworks.

So, if they decide to offer a cheap non-Steamworks version some years along the road, I might bite, out of curiosity of how they tried to salvage that train wreck that "Elemental" came to be. But as a full-price Steamworks game? Naah, sorry.
A couple things.

(1) The game does not use Steamworks. Even the version on Steam doesn't use Steamworks. Downloading it is just a URL and huge setup.exe.

(2) Anyone who bought War of Magic in 2010 or before gets Fallen Enchantress for free. Hopefully, that will restore some of the lost confidence some people had with Stardock.
Hoping they manage to get Workshop integration on this, the modding scene for this game could be great.
