However, you should probably take a look at DESOLATION ROAD - a much underrated SciFi novel by one Ian MacDonald.
Can't desribe it too much without spoiling it, but if you fancy Martian colonialism meets scifi, cactus people and a hint of weirdo Dune / W40k-like imperialism kinda stuff thrown in... bloody great!
