Starmaker: I used to tape soundtracks when I was a kid. No audio cable, just like that, speaker to mic, lock the cat out, volume to 11, press record. One of these days I'll make a proper hi-fi version of those mixtapes.
My brother and I also taped some game music but we actually did use a cable, first for Amiga games, then also for PC games. Later on I connected my MP3 player's Line-In to the PC's output. Eventually I got so clever to either a) just buy the soundtrack b) extract the music from the gamefiles or c) make the PC record its own output without any additional hardware involved (in that order).
Yep...while many soundtracks are just little sound bites of music, others are quite nice. I keep a copy of GalCiv2, and The Witcher in my car for some soothing traveling music on road trips..oohh, and the soundtrack from X3TC is superb on the road music to keep the road rage down ;-)

I didn't really give game soundtracks too much thought before this thread, but now I just finished downloading 15 separate soundtracks. Whoo!
Btw, forgot to mention - actually my Dad and my GF do listen to some game soundtracks despite not being interested in games at all.

My Dad actually loves the Assassin's Creed 2 soundtrack. Once he called me from work via Skype. He was alone at the office doing some serious overtime and the soundtrack was playing in the background. He actually admitted that he loves the soundtrack and listens to it often while working.

My GF on the other hand enjoyed the Borderlands OST a whole lot and being a metal fan there's also multiple other sounddtracks she enjoys such as the one of Jets 'n' Guns (by Machinae Supremacy, who are an amazing band in general) and Painkiller (personally I think it's generic stuff but she actually enjoyed it a lot).

Edit:
Btw, you can hear more music by Machinae Supremacy in the Giana Sisters game that was released today.

Also: The reply and edit functions of the forums are fixed. Hurray!

Was doing this too. Title tunes of series or movies from the tv, and musics from amiga games. I finally erased the amiga musics tape. But then, I got a nice collection of mp3 from the late www.amigamusic.com. I wonder what happened to that website.
