Telika: I'd suggest to play the game first actually (I generally prefer to discover soundtracks in context), it's one of the best videogames ever for many reason, its usage of background music is one. If not, I suggest the whole soundtrack,

What. Sands of Times is generally considered as one of the best game ever, by some of the most unforgiving gamers and critiques. Are you sure you don't confuse it with other prince of persia games, such as, Prince of Persia for instance ?
Depends on how good the soundtracks are. Despite another user here mentioning their dislike here these, I absolutely loved the soundtracks for Quake I and II. Quake I's soundtrack was made by Nine Inch Nails and complemented the game extremely well. Likewise for Quake II, the soundtrack was made by Sonic Mayhem. This is probably the only game soundtrack that I listen to on a regular basis outside of the game itself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfD35HT9irU If you like this, listen to the entire game soundtrack. Awesome stuff. Other than that, the other soundtracks that I really appreciate are those for Fallout 2 and Civilisation 3. I play both games with a fanatic fervor and never get bored of their music. A final mention goes to the original Half-Life. I really liked the soundtrack, but don't find it compelling enough to listen to outside of the game. But yeah, it's all down to the quality of the music.

Have to agree there, even though I didn't want to explicitly quote that post... I can appreciate the fact that NIN is not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally felt that it complemented Q1 very well.

Nope, it's music from credits of Warrior Within. And listen to this - main menu theme from Two Worlds. I don't know why, but I find it very touching. There are gems in gaming soundtracks, you just need to look. Oh, and Prince of Persia trilogy - one of the best games in modern gaming.

hedwards: I think it depends on the game, some games have good music others, like Quake, have dreck for sound track and then there's ones like FO3 and FO:NV where the soundtrack is fine, if somewhat lacking in muchness.

And I'm the ignorant. Quake from a graphic design perspective was pretty terrible, aesthetic was never a strong point of that particular game. And the sound track was completely pointless. Trust me, turn off the sound track and the game is still atmospheric mostly because you're not paying attention to anything other than where the monsters are.

Quake was a horrid game when it comes to aesthetics or artistry. It happened to have an amazing single player experience and great death match game, as well as mechanics that nobody had ever seen. But, in terms of the art work and aesthetic value, it was completely terrible. Compare it with something like Wolf 3D or Unreal which had solid aesthetic value and where the game designers cared enough to take those aspects seriously and you really can't argue that the Quake design team screwed the hooch.

The Fallout sound tracks served their purpose, they are a much, much harder series to provide a soundtrack to because you're talking about 40+ hours where the player has and you don't have any idea ahead of time what the player is actually going to be doing. Ideally a sound track should relate to the game and those Fallout games are just huge. You're not going to cover the proper atmosphere for all of it.

Quake OTOH, is shorter, more predictable and in theory the aesthetics should have been a gimme. but, ultimately, they couldn't decide on what the game was about. Just about any sound track could have been used for that game because there's no point to it.

Quite possible. I'd heard poor things about "Prince of Persia" but didn't know there were four games with the name. So, I don't know which one supposedly sucked.

The Unreal and Two Worlds ones were rather nice. I could listen to them in a game, but not outside.

Nowadays I find myself listening to game soundtracks more than "standard" music.

In fact I don't really follow any current artists, just the ones who made music in the 90s.
if they offer soundtracks free its fine. will i pay extra for it? no. most game end up getting the music turned off so i can hear my mp3 player anyway. even if the music is good and fits the game rarely would i want to listen to it out of game.

Eight, and that's if you only count PC releases. It's a gigantic franchise with a very long history.

Also, all of them are very good to excellent, the exceptions being Prince of Persia 3D (which I haven't played, but is universally panned) and Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands (which I have and which indeed isn't very good). Then there's Prince of Persia (2008) which was controversial because it dared to be different than the previous titles, so it got some lousy reviews which, if you ask me, were really unfair.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is generally considered the best game of the franchise and one of the best games ever made.

Mark Morgan's soundtracks for Fallout 1 and 2 are particularly great things. Heavily inspired by Aphex Twin, true, but still great. Inon Zur didn't even come close, but I've spent all of F3 and NV listening to the extended oldies radio stations, anyway.

I used to tape soundtracks when I was a kid. No audio cable, just like that, speaker to mic, lock the cat out, volume to 11, press record. One of these days I'll make a proper hi-fi version of those mixtapes.
