Tallima: I for one love the soundtracks. Icewind Dale 1+2 and Realms of Arkania 1 are on my current playlist, but there's tons of songs I've been loving.

SimonG: I just wish we could get the full soundtracks. One of these days I need to rip my CD versions for this.
My son has been rocking out to the Thorwal song. He just loves it (he's 3).
Why isn't the Arcanum soundtrack included as a download extra here anyway?
I usually don't listen to soundtracks, but hell, some games and movies have soundtracks SO AWESOME, you just have to listen long after finishing the game.

My favourite game soundtrack is Homm4.

Crosmando:
Technically you can just snag the files from the game folder, but it really is a shame that there is not an official version that comes a long with the game.

I think the real question to ask here: There are actually people that don't like soundtracks?

Ride on, have you listened to OST to Disciples 2? That has some really eerie sounding tracks, they don't appeal to your emotions in an "epic" way like say the Icewind Dale or Elder Scrolls music does, but they really embody "dark fantasy" to me, quite unsettling yet interesting.

Edit: Holy shit I sounded like a bit of a pretentious twat in that post

Crosmando:
I think of Icewind Dale, Elder Scrolls as that bombastic "big band" marching down the street. Disciples 2 is that soloist you want to tell to go eat, but can't help but drop everything you're doing to listen to the music.

The extra music they added with the Servants of Dark/Servants of Light/Rise of the Elves was nice too.
For some reason I can't remember the original Disciples OST?

It's not as good, but has a few decent tracks. The best one imo is the one in the main menu of the game.

BlueMooner: My purpose certainly wasn't to criticize those who listen, or to suggest that GOG should stop doing it. I was honestly wondering about something that I didn't understand.
Yes but you came off as "I don't understand this weird thing that surely no one does." And you threw in "so why do they bother when I don't care and assume no one else does."

It's often HOW you say something that matters more than what you say.
I am one of those people who actually prefers to listen to instrumental music, therefore I am happy about the fact that GOG includes the soundtracks with the game downloads. If I like a song with lyrics, that is not because of the lyrics themselves, but because I enjoy the voice of the vocalist, and the way s/he uses his or her voice. However that does not mean that lyrics cannot hold any value to me, but I think they always should be secondary to the actual music. ( But then again this heavily varies on the musical genre in question, so this is a rather subjective opinion.)

And I find that some games can have soundtracks written by very creative and talented composers, eg. Mark Morgan, or Tomas Dvorak, whose work on the Machinarium OST overshadows the game itself for me.

I find I need to be in the context of a game to appreciate its music. Total Annihilation I can listen to all day, only if I'm playing Total Annihilation all day. Same with World of Goo, brilliant soundtrack but I find it annoying on its own.

I think I like my music to be more self-contained, with a definite intro, content and ending, progressing from one to another like a story. Game soundtracks (with a bunch of exceptions, I'm sure) seem more likely something that can be looped.

I dunno, maybe I get bored too easily :)

Rochard theme song doesn't count, that's just straight out rockin blues.

That is true, not all game soundtracks stand out on their own, but there are certain composers who are worth paying attention to.

Psyringe: Let's just say I'm astounded.
So perhaps you have a better understanding of the distance between us and why I'm very surprised in turn. : )

I've never played Civ4 or any of the GTA. I'm familiar with the Tetris theme, but find it irritating; I don't wish to hear it more than I have to (that goes triple for Super Mario). As for Baba Yetu, I found it a bit... repetitive. It did remind me very much though of , which is alright. I do like the Morrowind theme a lot, and came across this not long after the game: [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr6kSIGV37c]Morrowind - The FInal Stage (I'm amused by the video portion that comes with this). It never occurred to me there might be more remixes and never looked for any. It was only just now looking for an online copy of the song that I see there are several more.

And to share another game song I like, there's Majesty 1.

I listened to the songs MarioFanatic and ShogunDarius shared and didn't hear anything I liked (thank you though). Let me be clear, it's not that I dislike game music, or find it worthless. It's just that nothing GRABS me such that I want to hear it outside the game. I hear the music on the main screen, I hear it during exploration, I hear it during battle... that's really quite enough for me. I may enjoy a movie or TV show, but I don't want to watch them over and over and over.

"Also, please note that many of the people who are interested in soundtracks, like to get them in a better format than that provided in-game. "

I hadn't considered this.

Fenixp: And there's also Warrior within soundtrack. See? Lyrics.
This is in-game? Not fan-added for the vid?

Telika: I'd suggest to play the game first actually (I generally prefer to discover soundtracks in context), it's one of the best videogames ever for many reason, its usage of background music is one. If not, I suggest the whole soundtrack,
I heard poor reviews of Persia, so I'll look for some music later.

avatar
timppu: Here are three examples
Only the first one, Crysis 2, did I find halfway decent, and even then mostly the first third.

"Let me ask you this:"

I had piano lessons when I was young yet my mother was tone deaf, if that helps. I don't listen a lot, mostly because local radio doesn't play much that I like, and that's really all I can listen to while working. I used to use Pandora while at home, but I haven't used them in a while, and don't really miss it.

There are some songs that really move me, and I've cried many times over certain songs. Here are a few that have affected me in some way:

Bring Me To Life (Evanescence)
As The Rush Comes (Motorcycle)
Incredible Hulk theme - Lonely Man (???)
The Last Unicorn theme (???)

Honorable mention:

Sin City theme (forget who, but the vocal version sucks)
Because Of You (Kelly Clarkson)
yes, for instance: if i played a game with music that i really liked (can't name one right now) when i was young or on a friend's PC and i don't really want to buy the game but i want the soundtrack then i can buy that soundtrack separately

hedwards: I think it depends on the game, some games have good music others, like Quake, have dreck for sound track and then there's ones like FO3 and FO:NV where the soundtrack is fine, if somewhat lacking in muchness.
Oh my God...
Trent Reznor's highly original, atmospheric and unique work on Quake = dreck?
Generic uninspired and unfitting orchestral shit for Fallout 3 by Inon Zur = fine?
What sick world do you live in?
