Learning that Nokia's HERE maps navigation is coming to Android devices too! And it will even be free (even though I would be ready to even pay a bit of money for it)! WOOHOO!
I'll use this opportunity to complain how much Google Maps navigation SUCKS! There's no denying it has the most POIs, and nice features like streetview, reviews of hotels, means to make reservations online from that view etc...
...but all that falls flat on its face, if there is a hiccup on the data connection. Like two days ago, I told that stupid Google Maps to get me to certain address. It waits for one minute, then complains it can't connect to Google servers, and that's that. No navigation for you, mister. F U!
Nokia's navigation, as far as I could tell, always worked as it is supposed to regarding the offline mode:
- easy way to download the maps to your device, e.g. the current city, or country, or even the whole world. At least previously the offline maps of the whole world fitted easily into a 16GB SD card, and still leaving lots of space. I don't recall exactly how much space the whole world maps + POIs took, maybe around 6-10GB.
- If you don't have data connection, it simply uses the offline mode, using the maps and reduced POIs in the SD card. You didn't even need to have a SIM card in your phone for this to work.
- If you had a data connection and allowed the navigator to use it, then your experience would be even better, ie. you get more search results, GPS satellites are found faster, maps are updated as you drive if it recognizes there is an updated map of the current area you are navigating, etc.
I'm sure there are other existing offline navigators for Android, but either they cost lots of money (TomTom), or seem pretty obscure and unsupported. I was about to ask for suggestions earlier, but now that HERE Maps is coming to Android, I couldn't care less for the other solutions. This offline functionality is especially important to me when driving e.g. abroad.
Also this may now mean I have no reason whatsoever to get a Windows (Lumia) phone anymore. Sorry Microsoft, I was thinking of getting one specifically for HERE Maps.
Come to think of it, Nokia HERE navigation is in a way equivalent to "DRM-free navigation". :)
