tinyE: Starting my annual Diablo 2 binge.

What do you prefer for a Barbarian: sword, axe, or mace?

Shield or no?
Diablo just isn't built for a shield. More damage = survive.

On my end, I'm finishing up Thief finally. Just a chapter and a half to go. I finally got past that unnerving asylum level. It was worse than amnesia for me. I suppose I became a chicken some time between Thief 1 and 4. :)

That Thief 1 cathedral level nearly gave me a heart attack many times with all those "Join us. Join us now!" guys. But Thief 4 had me on atmosphere alone.

My side-games I'm playing right now (games to tinker with, not really play through) are Serve, Eat, Delicious (or something like that), Surgeon Sim and the last King's Quest (the one peeps hate). The restaurant game is alright, but hurts my fingers. I didn't much care for Surgeon Sim. But I've really enjoyed King's Quest. It's not a King's Quest, but it's still fun, has a nice atmosphere to it and a few mildly tricky puzzles and things to find though exploration. It's a bit of an empty world and the fighting isn't fun, but it's been alright fun.

After Thief, I think it'll be time for Gothic 2. Should be fun!

jdsgn: I am currently playing Icewind Dale. Though technically being not too far away from PS:T, there is *much* less dialogues - so I guess I can relate...

piapancudo: i kind want to play icewind dale ... i say kinda want to play cause there are some other similar games like neverwinter or baldur's gate or arcanum and some others like that and i don't know which one to pick ... also, i got a backlog of games i wanna play, so it might take a while before i try this one
I was just about to say 'play it while it's still winter' but I guess that's not a thing in Brazil... ^^
Trying to play Volgarr the Viking... Beat Dust:An Elysian Tail it was pretty awesome till the end then it made some minor missteps.
I was playing Oblivion a good bit recently and then I got into a spot that is really boring, so I don't know if I'll stick with it too intensely. Bravely Default is taking a bit more priority, along with clearing the extra stages in Mario 3D World.
Darkspore. It's very good, and boasts a really good story/universe.
StarCraft2 Heart of the Swarm. Wife gave it to me for Christmas when it was on sale for $10. That is such a steal... Campaign is really good. And as much as I used to love the multiplayer, I don't think I'll have the time to really get into it.
QVADRIGA - Demo - making my mind up to purchase or not.

Agarest generations of war.
Final Fantasy XIII
MXGP
F1 2012

What am I doing with my life?
Final Fantasy V (GBA version)
Din's Curse. I just played it for the first time, but only for about fifteen minutes. It seems like it has a surprising amount of depth to it, the gameplay itself seems fun too.
psychonauts - the platforming is crap, just finished the coach's mind, the character interactions are double fine quality, hopefully it doesnt get boring later on
I got an urge to re-install the original Quake and Quake 2, with all the official expansions (two for both), updating them to with some modern mod. I was meaning to do this already many years ago, at least for Quake 1.

I installed Quake 1 with the Darkplaces mod. It looks quite nice compared to the original. My laptop's fans started to shout like crazy, and after I enabled framerate counter, I knew why: the game was running at 1300 fps or so. :) Wooo, smooth! Naturally it doesn't display every frame (more than the screen can show), but at least it calculates that many frames per second.

Fortunately the game options had an option for vsync, so the framerate dropped to 60 fps and the fans were not spinning wildly anymore. Anyway, Quake gameplay is just too aged and too familiar, I don't see myself replaying it.

Quake 2 was a bit trickier for some reason on Windows 7. First I was unable to start the installation (error about some missing .dll in the beginning), but if I started the installation from the install subdirectory (which has another setup.exe), then it went smoothly.

I first tried KMQuake2 mod, with some hires texture pack. It works pretty fine and enhanced the graphics somewhat, quite nice. I don't get it though, what is that new "Nightmare" difficulty level in the options? It was not quite obvious how to play the expansion packs with KMQuake 2, but googling helped (just needed to alter the shortcut to KMQuake a bit).

I also tried "Quake 2 Evolved" mod a bit, and it seemed to improve the graphics quite a lot, much more than KMQuake 2. It looks almost like a whole remake of Quake 2, quite nice. There a couple of things I don't like about it though:

- I don't like that new "splay out effect" where you see everything in two if you take damage. It looks cool, but it makes the gameplay quite a bit harder, as it is considerably harder to aim at something if you keep seeing everything distorted due to damage.

- The mod apparently lets you select any level right from the start, or even watch all the videos (outro etc.). I'd prefer a more vanilla experience where you just play through the whole game from start to finish, not selecting individual levels.

I didn't try yet if I could get the expansion packs to work with Quake 2 Evolved.

I'll probably play the KMQuake 2 version, even if it doesn't look quite as nice and modern, but is closer to the original's graphics.
I'm a Bread
Civilization 5
Quake 2: maybe I still need to try a Berserker mod? It seems even more advanced than Quake 2 Evolved? Hopefully it supports the expansion packs too.

EDIT: Well, it sure does look sweet, but the comments suggest there are some serious gameplay bugs even with the latest version released in December (missing lifts, gameplay scripting bugs etc.):

God damn it. I'm pretty much stuck in one X-Wing Tour of Duty 4 mission (16B probably, if I remember right; it is an optional mission, but I want to beat it). It just feels insane, the game starts pumping out TIE Bombers in sets of four which I need to catch before they destroy friendly shuttles and ships, but at some point they seem to start targeting me. Having something like three TIE Bombers lock into me with their missiles at the same time... It seems to become mainly a game of luck whether two of them will hit me (which will destroy my X-Wing), or whether I am able to avoid them long enough by making circles in the sky.

I seem to have forgotten if there is a fireproof way to avoid missiles which are beelining to you from afar. Just flying in circles doesn't seem to be it, they may still hit you when they close in. After that though, it seems to be easy to avoid them, just try to keep them in your sights all the time and they can't reach you.

Quake 2 (with KMQuake 2 mod): I had forgotten the levels are supposed to be a bit unlinear, where you need to revisit earlier levels every now and then. Frankly I don't like that, because if I see I have still undiscovered secrets in the level, I have no idea whether I should just go on to the next level (and later come back), or keep searching. The game gets a bit confusing, especially as I also found some secret level too.

I have finished this game before though (not the expansion packs)...
