Grargar: It is. Along with every other Sega game.
Yeah, thought so. But there's always hope.

Niggles: im curious as to why ppl go on at times about this?...why is the game *special*?
Not sure what you mean. Go on about what? Special how?

It's just a game I liked that never expected would come to PC, and it just did, so I'm happy. Is there something else to it?

P1na: It feels redundant to ask, but is it restricted over there?

Ah right is that why the mega drive emulated games (Sega Classics or whatever they're called) aren't here despite being DRM free elsewhere? DRM free but still region locked?
avatar
Fever_Discordia: Ooh purdy!
So it's more of a TBS than RPG though, then?
Damn games that blur the lines between genres and mess with my ability to put everything in nice neat little boxes!
On the other hand, yay innovation and daring to be different!
*continue to argue with self to fade*

But still - more TBS or RPG?

wolfsrain: More TBS, but heavy on story. And there are enough RPG elements to keep you satisfied. You also have some research to do, some looting, some grinding, from time to time and some prototype weaponry to find in the missions (you will have to trigger the enemy ACE units and kill them quickly to grab some nice pieces of weaponry).

It's a game that will keep you occupied for quite a while. And did i mentioned dat story?!:)
Ah OK, so I'm thinking that whole X-Com vibe of named guys who get promotions and you get attached to with a research tree and certain things you have to do on certain encounters to advance the story, only more so? 'Writ large' as they say

I'm not sure. Steam region locks Japanese users out of Japanese games (the irony), but other sites don't seem to do so. Notable example is Trails in the Sky, which is region-locked on Steam, but not on GamersGate.

Well, in my case:

- Jrpg's are rare on pc (and i didn't have a ps3, so this is one of the few ps3 games that i wanted to play);
- Even with the "anime" look it isn't cringe worthy as most jrpg's are nowadays with the 12 year old cute girls showing their panties;
- The gameplay is awesome, it's turn based but you control the character and the aiming, imagine Xcom EU/EW but instead of just targeting with one click you actually use the crosshair to aim and shoot; you evolve and equip the classes instead of just one character (less grinding and having problems with characters underleveled), you also get to choose the type of vehicle you will take to battle (heavy but with low travel distance or light but only with machine guns? etc).

Overrall, if you don't care about jrpg's then it's probably not for you, if you enjoy jrpg's (even those cringe worthy ones) then it's a good game and if you enjoy jrpg's but roll your eyes with those that are normally released nowadays then this is a drop of water on the desert.

Somewhat. But the first game's tech tree, IIRC, is quite basic; and there is no individual XP for each soldier either. As the drill instructor puts it, "there are no heroes here"; you get XP for completing missions and then you level up classes as a whole instead of individual soldiers. Which is something I quite liked, personally.

They did a lot better job on the PSP sequels to develop the "extra" non-story soldiers, but at the same time they reduced the amount and eliminated the permadeath of the first one. Soldiers have more character than the randomly generated X-com ones, with individual backstory and voice acting, but it's certainly not at RPG level. Do not expect an RPG here.

Ooh sounds like we've verging on the whole 'is a jRPG defined by it's anime graphics style or its Final Fantasy / Pokemon, turn based combat that's less reliant on positioning and more about choosing attacks' debate again aka 'Does Anachronox count as a jRPG?'
Apparently, they seem to have done a competent job with this port. Hell, it supposedly runs smoothly even on a lowly Intel HD 4000.

Waiting on Steam to finally unlock the game. (preloaded last night) *excited*
But expect a really good and dramatic story:P

Personally I think it's important to mention that it's a T-JRPG (i.e. tactical JRPG) not just a JRPG.

I know a lot of peoples who like/enjoy JRPG but who don't necessarily enjoy T-RPG and vice versa. If someone play this game expecting it to be like a "Tales of...", "Final Fantary VII-", or even "Trails in the Sky" he/she will probably be disappointed.

Yeah, that's totally what i've said, thank you for skipping the part where i mentioned "12 year old cute girls showing their panties" as the problem with nowadays jrpg's (and the only complain that i made) and evolving into that discussion.

On the other hand someone who's left a bit cold by them but love FF-tactics, Orge etc. Is going to love it I assume!

I've heard Anachronox referred to in that way. More fitting than any other description I'd think. Or at least JRPG-styled since it isn't Japanese.

I... I'm not sure what I did wrong I was more asking if this is what people would think of as a 'JRPG' at all given that it doesn't have the same combat style as a lot of them, then another poster (more as a ninja than as a response) revealed that 'T-JRPG' is apparently a thing, so let's just go with that and calm down, I guess! :)

Then i apologize for my post as i misunderstand your post as one of those defense post's from the kaway-anime-troop-defense-force when you started by mentioning the anime graphics style and continued to something that i wasn't even talking about (and that is why i reacted that way).
