jefequeso: Unless something terrible has happened to them over the past decade or so, I have faith that they will be able to deliver something wonderful. Both Ultima Underworld and the Thief games are basically timeless.

Mrstarker: Just a heads up, Chris Siegel, the lead producer had this to say over at Otherside forums:

We have learned over the years as developers to concentrate on game first, looks second.
I'm pretty confident in saying the game will look 10x better than the pre-alpha footage.
We understand that looks matter, and we will put up something soon that shows off what we *think* the final game may look like.

Mrstarker:
Ahh, that's good to know. I don't care one iota about graphical fidelity, but I feel that the visual style can do a lot to add/detract from a game, especially one like this that's so focused on creating an interesting world.

That's the problem with prototypes -- it looks nothing like the final game. They are now using unity assets, but for the final game they are making their own.

Some more info from Chris Siegel:
Can't go by art design at all at this point. We have learned over the years that you develop the game, then the look. I know this is counter to the AAA space, but we don't have to waste cycles in early development on the look. What you are seeing from us is like, broad brush strokes. I'll push out some more stuff showing off what we are going for gameplay wise in the coming days. I know it is not completely clear in the KS video.
What are your thoughts about this? http://www.othersideentertainment.com/forum/index.php?topic=80.0v

I voted Fungi dude. The mushroom dude is kind of generic but nice. Fungi dude is more eerie and mysterious. Maybe they could keep both.

They both have their upsides -- mushroom man has a nice recognisable silhouette, but fun guy looks less generic. I went with fun guy, because the mushroom dude was a bit too cartoony.
They've hit the half-way mark.

I'm optimistic that they'll reach the base target, but it's not at all clear that they'll exceed it significantly.

This should have been one of those campaigns where they were fully-funded within hours!

Underworld was completely and utterly revolutionary, and Looking Glass went on to create some of the most incredible games ever made. I wish gamers were throwing their money behind this project the way that they've done for some of the other legends of old. Losing Looking Glass was nothing less than a tragedy for gaming, so if this is a chance to bring them back in some form... well, gamers should be behind this in full force.

Underworld. System Shock. Thief. These are legendary titles*, and a legacy deserving of our support if there's a chance of adding another genre classic to the ranks.

* amongst some other also-incredible but lesser-known names.

I agree. I expected it to have reached the base goal within the first 24 hours. I'm kinda puzzled as to why it didn't.

I'm sure they'll reach the base target but it will break my heart if they can't reach the final stretch goal. :(
They're two-thirds of the way to the base goal.

Still looking very promising for the $600,000, and still looking completely up in the air regarding which stretch goals they might meet.

I want the lizard men and the mod tools, damn it.

Update 7 makes good reading, if you're still a bit unsure of what this is all about!

The prototype footage still makes me worried that people will imagine the final product will look like that. I wish they were a bit clearer in all of their videos that they're not thinking too much about graphics until much further down the track, and the final game won't look much like what they're currently showing.
The game is now on Greenlight!

Please take a moment to vote for it. :)
So how does voting work in Greenlight?

I can see a question "Would you buy this game if it were available in Steam?", which I am interpreting as "Would you buy this game from Steam if it were available in Steam?", to which my answer would be "Hell no", despite the fact that I am definitely buying this game (regardless of whether it is available in Steam, but definitely not from Steam)*.

I guess I have to click "Yes" to vote for it?

* Well, I've already backed it for a DRM-free copy, but if I hadn't then the above would apply.

Greenlight has nothing to do with whether or not a game gets made, just whether it gets sold on Steam. I guess a failed Greenlight campaign for a still-in-progress title might prompt the developers to give up on it, but I doubt that would apply in this case. So a Yes vote pretty much just means "I would consider buying this game from Steam", not "I want this game to happen"

Yeah. You do have to click "Yes".
I already backed it too and I wouldn't buy it from steam either.
I suggested voting for it in order to help bring it to the top of popularity lists and potentially bring some more backers to Kickstarter.

Where are all the Ultima Underworld fans?

Big announcement: "Stephen L. Russell will be doing voice acting for Underworld Ascendant. Among gamers, Stephen is perhaps best known as the voice of Garrett in the original Thief games."

Come on, GOGdolytes! We're still sooooo faaaaaar from the strech goals. T_T
Otherside Entertainment contains mainly of people who were responsible for some of the best Good Old Games there are. Like Ultima Underworld, Thief or System Shock.
So yes, I backed this.
I just made an entry to the GOG Wishlist:

http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/underworld_ascendant

Please vote if you want this game released here!
