dtgreene: How would you say they compare to the ones in Ultima 1?
avatar
mqstout: Ultima 1 has spaces battles? I only played Ultima 1 for like ten minutes before giving up. Its controls were a bit "too old game" for my lazy self now.
Yes, right before you can fight the final boss you have to go into space and fight some space battles.

mqstout: Nothing like pixel-perfect stealth required to avoid the tank from being alerted to your commando and racing to squash it. Argh!
It feels like it wouldn't be as bad as having the level reset the instant the tank is alerted, as happens in many Zelda games (starting with Ocarina of Time) in their mandatory insta-fail stealth sequences.

Instant failure reset's better than the slow but inevitable death. The tank will shoot you to death long and slowly while you're crawling around ineffectively shooting back and dodging squishes. But yeah, C&C's commando missions are very similar to stealth missions in other games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdDy05ug3VM
Half-Life's final Zen levels.

Falling to my death, over and over....
This room in Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

This one in Super Meat Boy.

And of course Bloody Swamp in Chameleon Kid.

Oh boy, that Super Meat Boy level is the 2nd closest I've ever come to giving up on my lofty 100% completion project. No1 goes to the level just after this one, where I did finally give up.
Fighting Rugal in King of Fighters '94

Used to spend all my lunch money in the Arcade trying to beat that swine.

why are you guys still responding to this I'm new here and yet you keep coming

(Praying to God you understand) The popularity of a thread has absolutely nothing to do with the seniority of the originator and everything to do with the discussion value of the thread.

Heard there's one particularly notorious room in Celeste Chapter 9.

Also, in Wonder Boy in Monster World (played on the Sega Genesis Mini), there's one room with platforms that move when you land on them, and you need to use them to climb; one mistake and you fall, which IIRC means having to re-fight a miniboss. I quit the game at that point.

Aplomado: Half-Life's final Zen levels.

Falling to my death, over and over....
I didn't mind. Back then Quickload actually meant "quick".
While I like the games overall, there are some annoying bits that I would rather skip if possible...

Cemtetary (Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven)
The missions are different depending on who is your chosen character, but both involve the fact that the undead are immune to normal weapons. One character starts with a undead-killing sword that has nasty side effect of constantly draining your health. The other character doesn't and has to avoid the undead, but can still kill human enemies that also populate that level.

Power Core (Geneforge)
Just being in the area means constantly taking damage. There is no way to shut off the hazard and the protective equipment only mitigates the damage.

Hrakert Rift (KOTOR)
The sluggishness of moving underwater was painful. Otherwise, Manaan is probably my favorite planet in the game.

Grancel Sewers (Trails in the Sky)
It's one of those areas where no mini-map is available and it can be confusing to navigate. It can also also be difficult to avoid combat due to the narrow passages.

Primate Intelligence Lab (Soul Hackers)
The demons encountered are low-leveled by the time this dungeon unlocked. However, the encounter rate is ridiculously high.
