JK41R4: I'm only really interested in Shin Megami Tensei, but I'd rather get some more PC games or some hardware. Or a 3DS. Quite a few games I wanna play on one of those.

But maybe it will be worth it later, who knows? I certainly won't be getting the Switch as a handheld or portable gaming device, my laptop would be more useful (and I don't go out that much anyway).

Hah! I only saw one screenshot and I immediately started thinking of Sonic Adventure as well. And everything that happened to SEGA afterwards...

In general, I agree with Darvond, I don't really see this thing doing much better than the Wii U.

Darvond: Okay, I'm trying to figure out the "roles" here.

Mario would obvious be the equal to Sonic, Luigi would probably take the Tails role, Wario of course would be the Knuckles equal, but then things get a bit hairy depending on how many "bad friends" Nintendo feels the need to shoehorn in.

For example, I have no idea who would be in the Amy, Shadow, Rogue, or most importantly, the Big the Cat role.
Wouldn't Wario fit into Shadow's role better? Don't know much about the Mario games story and whatnot...

They would be dissimilar in terms of characters I guess, but I was thinking more about the whole, open-world Mario in a city with fairly normal looking humans on possibly earth, thing.

Also, does Mario normally do Spin Dashes/Spin Attacks? Could have sworn I saw him do something more suited to the Blue Blur in the trailer.

Yeah, spin attacks have been a staple since Galaxy at least.
The hat throwing thing is new though, presumably associated with the magic talking hat thing.

I think it's funny that people have been clamouring for something different with Mario for years and as soon as Nintendo give it to them they complain.
I like the sound of this, Mario in free roaming open worlds again.

Well, spin attacks have been a staple of the series since Mario Land 2. If they start homing, that's when you get worried. As for Wario being in the Shadow role, nah. Wario hasn't been a badguy since...Super Mario Land 2. Amoral, selfish, greedy, but not bad. Just not a hero.

I think people are getting Super Mario Sunshine vibes, when most of us wanted more Galaxy, but now in HD.

IE, less of a story focus because they botched that last time, and more adventure with less gimmicks like Fludd.

Nope. I'd much rather Sunshine than Galaxy again. 64 and Sunshine are the best 3D Mario games, sure Sunshine's gimmicks weren't great, but the free roaming worlds were brilliant and disappeared with the Galaxy games. The first one had a few, but they were still a shadow of Mario 64's worlds. Two many of the stars were in self contained versions of each world, there were hardly any that were truly free roaming.

They weren't bad games by any means, but they weren't Mario 64. If they are at least trying to emulate that then they have my vote.

More Mario 64 would be great too. The problem with Sunshine is that it had the awful story and voices.

And Galaxy didn't?
Rosalina and the lumas wasn't exactly Shakespeare... any story they tack on to Mario is going to be awful (unless we're talking the RPG games, which manage to be quite good). The story is "The Princess is in another castle" we all know that, that's all it needs.
Will a tacked on story and some goofy side characters be annoying? Probably.
Will it spoil an other wise good game? No.

If they get it right and go back to Mario 64 style then I'll actually have a reason to pick it up.

The thing about the story of Galaxy is that it was well executed, in that it stays out of the way. The thing about Sunshine's story is that it completely shattered suspension of disbelief and had several idiot ball moments.

Were the Piantas blind, or just straight up stupid? How could they mistake a man who is an entirely different color, has entirely different mannerisms, and an entirely different voice for the actual criminal?

Why did Peach even give pause to the idea that she was Bowser Jr's mother? One is a spiky lizard. The other is a semi-sentient fungus in a humanoid body. This is where Peach went from charmingly aloof with occasional badassery to the IQ of a turnip.

Who would clear landing on an a runway with toxic sludge? And also related, who would clear a landing for a wanted criminal?

What biological reason would the tropical dinosaurs who live near water all their lives have reason to melt upon touching water?

What exactly were Bowser and his kin doing on vacation when all they ended up doing was bathing in a lava bathtub? They coulda done that at home, without any pesky plumbers coming to mess up the day.

What exactly was the endgame of stealing the shines and spreading toxic sludge, anyway?

I could keep going. But I think I've gotten the point across that Sunshine's story is something we don't want more of.

Are you seriously criticizing the story and lack of realism... in a Super Mario game?

I'm not sure how a woman could be unsure if she gave birth to a lizard or not. Especially if it had the spikes when it was born.

No, I think criticising there being too much of it.

...dear God. I think I almost hurt myself laughing.
last Nintendo i bought was a game-cube after that its all been gimmicks.. they need to pull a Sega and just produce for the mass and make it on other consoles.... what if PlayStation and Nintendo teamed up, goodbye Xbox!

Imagine Zelda in full VR that the PlayStation supports.. that would be like printing money!

And how insane that story is because there is too much of it.

And therein lies one of the biggest faults of Sunshine. Like how Samus has a panic attack over seeing the space dragon she's killed at least 5 times by that point in Other M.

Yeah, a monopoly isn't really what you need in the console industry.

4 times by my count, but god yes the writing for that game was awful.
