Vainamoinen: He who replies to one of Tauto's posts with "Lol yeah"...
Just recognized, that you probably rather meant "initialpresence". In that case I want to apologize for my outbreak.
I'm rather thin-skinned lately.

tinyE: Fifteen years ago I got yelled at by a coworker for suggesting the world was more than 6000 years old. She called the fossil record and carbon dating a hoax. XD

Actually she didn't really yell at me, it was worse than that; kind of a condescending, "Oh don't be stupid, of course the fossil record is fake."
Are you really from Greenland? Sounds like it's floating towards the US...

Kinder und Linke by Erich Fried

Wer Kindern sagt
Ihr habt rechts zu denken der ist ein Rechter
Wer Kindern sagt
Ihr habt links zu denken
der ist ein Rechter

Wer Kindern sagt
Ihr habt gar nichts zu denken
der ist ein Rechter
Wer Kindern sagt
Es ist ganz gleich was ihr denkt
der ist ein Rechter

Wer Kindern sagt
was er selbst denkt
und ihnen auch sagt
dass daran etwas falsch sein könnte
der ist vielleicht
ein Linker
The googlemachine seems to have lost something in the translation perhaps (well balanced and sane) German native speaker with a good grip on English (in my experience that is the majority of Gernans) can do a better job of translating this.

Who says children
You have to think right that is a right one
Who says children
You have left to think
he is a right-hand man

Who says children
You have nothing to think about
he is a right-hand man
Who says children
It does not matter what you think
he is a right-hand man

Who says children
what he thinks himself
and also tell them
that something could be wrong about that
that is maybe
a linker

Copper Harbor Michigan

Virtually the same as Greenland only more remote. :P
The fact that a non-political discussion about VR in this topic has posts in it "low rated", including a couple of mine, for no good reason.

Here's another one:

That branch prediction in CPUs would lead to information disclosure security vulnerabilities. (I believe that this is the cause of things like Meltdown and Spectre.)

Here is how I would translate it:

Children and Leftists by Erich Fried

Who tells children
you have to think right
that is a rightist
Who tells children
you have to think left
that is a rightist

Who tells children
you don't have to think
that is a rightist
Who tells children
It doesn't matter what you think
that is a rightist

Who tells children
what he thinks himself
and also tells them
that something could be wrong thereon
that is maybe
a leftist
...that SHE got brainwashed by a terrible individual and led her life directly into the dumpster.

dtgreene: Anyway, another one: That there would be a need for a March for Science. It really shouldn't be necessary to hold a "science is good" march, but it ended up happening simply because so many people in power are anti-science. For that matter, why are so many people anti-science anyway?
Guess it is a form of exile... faced with a chaotic world they deem beyond control they retract into a world where they still have control by just picking their reality.

Aside from that, science is not in a good place today and academia is a mind boggling mess. Research has suffered a lot from the financialisation of big pharma and others, who now extract more (shareholder)value from short-terms strategies on financial markets (like buybacks), than long term research. In academia the publish-or-perish mentality has created an environment where people with notably short funding cycles simulate research rather than do it. Shocking percentages of findings can not be reproduced (even in critical cancer studies and so on) because researchers feel they must publish even when what they did did not work (as someone said, their is no noble for fact checking).

Humanities also suffered from over-publishing and an atmosphere where the most important thing for your paper is to distinguish yourself by carving out the X-hundredth niche that has not yet been covered with just one more "perspective".

Anti-sciencers end up even more wrong than the rest, but science is not in a good place.

Interestingly, there are actual scientific journals that focus on publishing negative results. Such studies are useful to scientists because they show what didn't work, whether because the study was attempting to show something incorrect or because the study was flawed in a way that made it not produce the result it should have, and that a more careful study might be needed.

viperfdl: Just because I didn't ridicule Tauto doesn't mean that I'm his friend nor support his views.
You didn't reply to Tauto's post with "lol yeah". We were a-ok before you lashed out.

You could have spared me your usual moral relativism. The entirety of it.

Yes, you are right. I made a mistake.
But moral relativism? Human history is full of cases where people did the most terrible atrocities in the name of morality.

Today, they justify the most terrible atrocities with whataboutism.
I hardly used the forums for a year or two, what's up with that alt-right vibe around here (or is that just the internet now... I guess it is)?

It's the world actually. And mega-authoritarian stuff like telling people what to think and how to speak is called "leftist" now. I don't get it either.
