DarkSaber2k: Pretty sure saying the game is fun would count as "a mention of the game"
avatar
john_hatcher: If that's the case then saying the game is lame (or better shit) would count as "a mention of the game" as well or wouldn't it?
Hard to call a game fun if you haven;t played it, easy to call a game lame if you never bought it and never played it.
Reviews are an area I welcome moderation from GOG. There are too many distorted reviews of "does not run on my system", which, though a warning of incompatibility, are not helpful in deciding to buy the game, and are made redundant by GOG's refund policy.

Politically charged ones are even more useless, especially in the case of this game which is wearing its heart on its sleave for its intentions. You don't need a review to tell you that this game dislikes brexit, or that it's going to shove that fact in your face. Maybe one, but just one.

I don't believe GOG is manipulating reviews for any purpose other than consumer benefit, this is just good moderation and I welcome it. They just need to correct the score at the same time.

blotunga: Honestly i don't get it. Your public profile is what matters to the community. What you post. I don't see how having your games on a different profile would protect you.

agogfan: Real profile = real identity.

Posting profile = anonymous. If GOG were ever hacked for example, I wouldn't be impacted significantly. Also, I can use less secure computers to post.
This is my real profile. I post and buy games for it. Do you think my real name is blotunga?

I suppose the smart thing to do is never use your real name on the web, ever. However, it's difficult for me to prove I own the games I've bought if my account has someone else's name. Yes, a username is different, and should give one a layer of protection with regards to privacy, but I'd never assume any system is so secure that there's 100% chance no one will ever tie your username to your actual name stored in your account, assuming it's your real name in the first place.

You have your receipts.

They'd be useless if they reflected someone else's name.

Just curious but how do you keep these receipts? Print them? Keep them in your inbox?

I leave them in my inbox and trust my service provider never loses them...

Eeeeek!! <<Hurridly prints receipts whilst downloading all games>>

Yeah, kind of wondering at what point you can legitimately claim a receipt is proof of ownership. Emails are very easily spoofed, printouts certainly wouldn't mean much.

I guess the combination of email + payment to GOG on the same date, but then what if you're using GOG wallet or something like that, there wouldn't be anything like it.

If the email on the email service provider is the only actual proof then that means you lose your legitimacy (proof of it) the moment the email provider's service ends.

Edit: Assuming GOG doesn't exist anymore of course.

...and then what happens to all the data on their servers? Would they be obligated to destroy it all before closing down? If someone bought them out, could they then use that data in any way they saw fit?

I see there's that new law in Europe that is supposed to protect privacy, but how effective will it be in reality?

And it's of no help if I voluntarily expose my identity. Suppose I have a friend who wants to game with me on GOG. Now he/she knows my real name and can link it to my username. And then we have a falling out and it turns nasty... what stops someone from annoymously posting: "Hey, that asshole agogfan, who posted that rant about protecting privacy... well, let me tell you, he works for a game publishing company, and we know how badly they treat the geniuses who actually create the games... and his name is...

EDIT: spelling... grrrrr

Linko90: And don't mention anything of the game's gameplay, mechanics, story, audio etc etc, just political rantings.
You do realise what you posted in response was totally irrelevant to my point, right? Irony.

You can't possibly know that they don't own the game, so you should not claim that to be the case.

I did. :(
Wait, do you not actually think that my legal name is HunchBluntley (without a space), and that I'm a sapient, anthropomorphic, bipedal cartoon moose who can read and write English and is capable of typing? o_O

If you ever change your avatar, some poor necromancer is going to be really confused ;)

To be fair to Blotunga, he/she probably thinks I'm being overly paranoid, and he/she is probably right. I'm not planning on running for president, or working in Hollywood, so no-one is likely going to care what I say here in one year's time, never mind 10 years from now.
