Actually, the mining days are over. It's very hard, near to impossible to mine productively now. There's an algorithmical decay, and it's reached the point that you will probably spend more money in processing power (electricity etc) than you will make from mining unless you have extremely sophisticated equipment. Just like every other monetary system, it's completely made up and arbitrary. Why do we value gold? Because.

In my country you can buy bit coins but you can't spend them. Similar thing goes with paypal. You can't add money in paypal account.
