Elmofongo: The growing fanbase for the most flavor of the month indie game to date: Undertale.
I expect so SO many MatPatt's "Theory" Videos at these point :P
P1na: Is it that bad? I played the game itself a couple weeks ago without knowing much about it, and I really enjoyed it. I even admit to asking my real life friends to play it so we can talk about it over a beer (unfortunately, they keep playing dota). Then I saw it take first place on the top games list by Jim Sterling, TB and Yahtzee; so I assume I'm not the only one who liked it, but I have not been exposed to any bad fanbase and I'm kinda curious. Nowhere curious enough to leave GOG to check fandoms, of course. I expect so SO many MatPatt's "Theory" Videos at these point :P
I have seen several in real life and many, many more on the internet and they all sing to the tune of: this game is the bar none, best game ever. It deserves (literally what I'm told, by the way) every award it can get. The reasons commonly given are twofold: choice and because it's the best game ever. So, every time a poll that involved Undertale came around all of a sudden there's a marked increase in turnout and Undertale would just win. Now, I know that Gamefaqs is a community in many cases of immature whiners, but when Undertale was up for a vote typically the turnout for their recent "best game ever" poll was around 80k I'd say for a given game, then Undertale and people from other sites (i.e. tumblr) would significantly boost it over the competition. And when it won there were quite a few victory laps around the internet of "We did it, we won," and many more incredibly pretentious and holier than thou comments on the subject about why a game a few months old "deserved" to win more than time honored classics (and I can't argue per se that it didn't, but I would also say that we don't know now if it really deserves to be called best game ever. But, that's me).
I thought this one user was just joking with how silly they seemed about all the praises they heaped on it but it became apparent that they were serious. Oh, and the only reason they assume that one would not like the game is that, "They must have tried the genocide route and failed." Now, many fanbases are easily over zealous and take up positions like this, but the pseudo justice argument for why Undertale was good, and generally it never left the realm of "Choice and Undertale," is something that I can see definitely earning that fanbase the worst at the moment award.

Thank you, I'd never heard of this, and so was quite confused. What an excellent concept :-)

AnimalMother117: I didn't really wanna talk about this, but I would like to present the argument of the side that would find the overall Undertale fanbase annoying.
...and I have to say I agree with you, as someone who's been eyeing Undertale when it popped up on the HB store with a DRM-free option (GOG probably thought it was "too niche", but I digress). The foaming at the mouth that I've seen around this game has actually turned me off of buying Undertale. Which is a shame, as it's a game that pretty much has what I'm looking for in a good RPG these days. Thank you. It's a relief to see someone with a balanced view of this game. From one side, you'd think that either Jesus, Budda and Mohammed (PBUH) coded this game themselves on stone tablets atop Mount Ararat while riding unicorns with rainbows coming out of their backsides, or this game is so awful and so horrific that it makes UbiSoft, EA and Activision look like saints by comparison. And again, it's a shame because this game actually has some stuff which seems pretty inclusive with respect to gender and sexuality, in a way that seemingly isn't unnecessarily forced or ham-fisted -- things which I think are truly deserving of praise. It's a shame that that seems to have been lost in the discussion.

The BSNES/Higan Fanbase, one of the most backward (but accurate) emu's ever made. stuff that's normal in everyday use, IE Zip support, Games living in a directory structure of your choosing, cheat-code support, all lacking, yet the "fan-base" will defend these basic knowledge stuff that's lacking to death almost. Byuu claims it's for "accuracy" since each game lives in its own dir simulating an "actual" cartridge (which it doesn't).

I don't think it's wrong to be turned off of something, just because someone may find the apparent extremism surrounding it distasteful or uncomfortable. I'd also hasten to add that I don't hate the game. I more than likely will play it in the near future, but the aforementioned extremism surrounding Undertale, combined with my burgeoning backlog has dampened my initial enthusiasm for it.

Of the 4 in the list I only heard of FNAF. From the topic I would guess I'm lucky to not have had contact with those fanbases :)

I've attempted to withdraw money from several fanbases with no luck at all yet, so as far as I can tell they're all horrible as ATMs.

Some people already mentioned Steam. I agree with them.
My boiling point happened when big mod for Deus Ex called Revision was released only on Steam.
I don't even... there was gossip about it but it's was just too stupid to be real...
Steam people had no issues with game older than Steam itself (!), also no issues with exclusive content (Revision) being Steam only.
Modders that made it got balls to deceive people moment before release.
Did they forgot modding is all about people and fans of the game?
Everyone were saying "it's only $2".
No, your dignity is worth $2...
Wandering into some forums on Steam results in facepalms, every time.
"Hai, du yu now if diz mod werk wif Br00tal D00m??".
Every comment section for Doom WADs since 2013 or whenever it was spawned.
And hey, I got news for ya!
