Chacranajxy: I mean, as someone who's imported Japanese games for consoles for years, the concept is nothing new. Inconvenient, sure, but once I have the game, why would I care anymore?

Actually, that was even more inconvenient. If the worst you have to do is buy a game through a VPN or have someone gift it to you, that's a lot better than having to import the game, wait for it to ship from Japan, and have to solder in a mod chip so the game runs on your US hardware. It's practically a luxury by comparison.

micktiegs_8: In the case of importing games physically, wouldn't you have issues if the game was classified as 'banned' from your country. I mean, I can import Japanese games that haven't been submitted to the board for rating... I'm not sure if it's still possible for banned games, though.
edit: I mean 'legal' not 'possible'.
I mean... banned doesn't mean you can't get it. But that's neither here nor there. In both situations, there's a way around it.

hedwards: Because that's pretty much the only principle they've stuck to consistently. They've introduced region pricing, lack of goodies, new games and such, apart from no-DRM, which is somewhat iffy, they haven't stuck to any of their other principles.
avatar
Barry_Woodward: But as I've pointed out, they're already selling regionally restricted games. It's not a principle they've stuck to.
AFAIK those are cases where one government or another banned the game and Mr. Gog turns a blind eye to people that buy copies for use in those regions.
avatar
moonshineshadow: I'd really love to get a game here that is restricted in the US, just for seeing the reactions here :D
avatar
stryx: Are there any?
I don't believe there are any games like that. Games like that wouldn't be made at all as the publishers are the ones that usually make those decisions. The government isn't legally allowed to ban games due to the 1st amendment.

Yea, I think that's the ONLY way I can get the game I'm thinking of. Stupid tight ass customs laws. I guess lawmakers think that game is synonymous to reality.

You are thinking about PC games. Regional locking is extremely pervasive in console games.

Reread my post and the one I was responding to. I'm not aware of any games like that on this site.

ScotchMonkey: I'd skip it to be honest. You're not missing much.
So I've heard, I was merely bringing it up as an example. If something came here that I really wanted and it was region blocked, sure I'd be pissed, but I wouldn't be so spiteful as to want everyone else to miss out too.

Barry_Woodward: Obviously regional restrictions are not ideal but neither is never releasing certain games DRM-free to the majority of customers worldwide. GOG already sells a number of locked games (https://www.gog.com/mix/regional_locked_games_on_gog), so why don't they sell more? Customer backlash? Are those excluded any worse off than before? There are ways around these kinds of restrictions ;).

P.S. What titles do you suppose would be released here if GOG relaxed their stance on regionally restricted games?
Isnt there a few games which cant be bought in japan? (must be more than the german and aussie one..)
It's possible, but I honestly don't know. Sega released their classic games DRM-free on DotEmu for a while. Does anyone know if Japanese customers were restricted from buying them there?

misteryo: I really don't count Germany's laws as "region restricting." Just because Germany outlaws a bunch of games does not mean to me that we should not carry them.

On the other hand, distributors who want to institute a region restriction scheme for whatever business reasons they have come up with - screw them.
Exactly my thoughts: if some stupid politicians ban some games then yes, gog should carry those games/distributors. It's not gog's nor distributor job to change those stupid politicians/laws. It's the residents job.
But if it is the distributor choosing to region lock a game, then yes: f..k that sh.t
Yes go for it , after this isn't anything left of Good Old Games , not the original principles , not the full name why bother then.

But seriously , i am sure me and many others joined this place because of the old classics , strong stance against practices that screwed over gamers, the ease of able being able to run them on modern systems

compared what users like barry and tfishell have made this place to be

A cesspool for any and every game to be on here as long as they are drm free, if they are not on here , we will bend over wipe out gog's originality and uniqueness , spam and beg for the game to be released here drm free.

I guess users like me now are in the minority , you know the type whos not bothered by drm or drm free but prefers to play good games old and new.

I guess letting GOG themselves to find the classics , good games on their own is too much to ask for , instead we have barry here to do the crappy threads , create pointless vote threads , spam the devs.

Does not compute.

DRM is the thing that is significantly screwing gamers over today.

yeah thats what gog wanted to avoid ?

On your edited first post , i worry about other aspects of the game more than the drm , like the story , gameplay and what not , drm for me is the least priority, i am happy either way , heavy drm too bad , drm free excellent .

Your response was that you came to GOG because it didn't support things that screw gamers over, while saying you don't really care about DRM, the thing that is hurting this industry and gamers more than anything.

Yes other things are shitty, no I don't defend region locking, but not caring about DRM is a mentality that needs to die out above pretty much anything else in this industry right now. GOG's true core principle has always been DRM free and the importance of this goes way beyond any one person's personal preferences.

In an industry increasingly obsessed with locking things down, taking control away from the users... DRM free is the only guaranteed way forward for game preservation.
