I'd rather not. if I'd want Steam (regional pricing, regional blocks, gifting restrictions, etc.), I would use Steam. GOG became what they are, because they tried to do things differently.

tfishell: I'm curious about where forum users lie, so for curiosity's sake I made a Straw Poll: http://strawpoll.me/6844126
Very impressive poll.
I must say that I am surprised. In my naïveté, I more or less expected there to be one yes vote.
I guess I simply don't belong here.

Barry_Woodward: I'd rather have Capcom and Take-Two here. I'd rather have Bionic Commando, BioShock, Borderlands, Breath Of Fire, Bully, Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, Civilization, The Darkness, Darkstalkers, Dead Rising, Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis, DuckTales, Final Fight, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Grand Theft Auto, L.A. Noire, Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Lost Planet, Manhunt, Marvel vs. Capcom, Max Payne, Mega Man, Midnight Club, Monster Hunter, Ōkami, Onimusha, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Power Stone, Resident Evil, Rival Schools, Spec Ops, Street Fighter, Strider, Sweet Home, U.N. Squadron, XCOM, et cetera here DRM-free.

Barry_Woodward: VPN people.

If you written a multi-platform, easy to follow, step-by-step guide on using a VPN that is publicly hosted and freely accessible please feel free to share it.

Barry_Woodward: I would be okay with it. I don't get the "If I can't have it, NO ONE CAN!" attitude.
avatar
ValamirCleaver: As opposed to a, "I don't care if significant portions of other geographic locations can't easily have it, I just want more games!" type attitude?

I think it's a better attitude to have, yes. You're just vindictive as hell today, aren't you?

I empathize with anyone who is left out because of regional restrictions (as an American I've missed out on many Japanese only releases), and yet my stance is still that it's better that as many people as possible get these games DRM-free than no one.

It's more of a situation of a member ducking certain of my posts with relevant points while choosing to respond to another one while to accuse me of "taking what he said out of context".

Remember this:

https://www.gog.com/wishlist/movies/yay_to_more_big_movies_which_would_introduce_region_locks
https://www.gog.com/wishlist/movies/nay_to_more_big_movies_which_would_introduce_region_locks

61 Yay vs. 1553 Nay

I'm pretty damn sure this Straw Poll isn't representative at all.

And just for the record:

[X] No to games with regional restrictions on GOG

Maybe people are saying yes so mister 'persistent as fuck' will stop persisting.

I made a stupid wishlist entry too but it seems nobody has caught on yet. Maybe they actually like seeing Barry's many threads on wishlist entries.
Definitely no, case closed for me. Already to many such games on gog.

Yes. Better that than gimped versions of games being foisted on everyone. Sorry Germany, but it's your government. You're the ones that have to slap some sense into it.

The poll doesn't have an answer I can choose. I really don't count Germany's laws as "region restricting." Just because Germany outlaws a bunch of games does not mean to me that we should not carry them.

On the other hand, distributors who want to institute a region restriction scheme for whatever business reasons they have come up with - screw them. I don't want GOG to carry that shit.

In some cases it's a mix of those two though. I don't think Heretic and Hexen were ever 'outlawed' in Germany, they could be bought in stores without a problem, but apparantly the publishers just thought the easiest thing to do was to not sell ANY of their FPS games to Germans on the internet, regardless of the laws, just to be on the safe side, or for whatever other reason.

And it's perfectly legal for adults now to buy Max Payne in Germany (e.g. via Amazon), but not on Steam, and there are even warnings about activating Max Payne on Steam with German IP, so it's to be expected that the publisher wouldn't sell it to Germans on GOG either, for whatever reason.

In any case, I agree that the poll is very limiting and suggestive. I don't even like the word "should" in the question. ;)

PaterAlf: I would say that's because you are not concerned by regional restrictions (it's the same as many people from the USA said they don't care about regional pricing).
avatar
moonshineshadow: I'd really love to get a game here that is restricted in the US, just for seeing the reactions here :D
Are there any?

I mean, as someone who's imported Japanese games for consoles for years, the concept is nothing new. Inconvenient, sure, but once I have the game, why would I care anymore?

Actually, that was even more inconvenient. If the worst you have to do is buy a game through a VPN or have someone gift it to you, that's a lot better than having to import the game, wait for it to ship from Japan, and have to solder in a mod chip so the game runs on your US hardware. It's practically a luxury by comparison.

In the case of importing games physically, wouldn't you have issues if the game was classified as 'banned' from your country. I mean, I can import Japanese games that haven't been submitted to the board for rating... I'm not sure if it's still possible for banned games, though.
edit: I mean 'legal' not 'possible'.
