I had this issue today with skills, then I got curious and went into the game folder. In the install directory, is the configuration exe. I launched it, changed the resolution to match my screens and unclicked using the hardware cursor. ran the game. I could now access the skill/spells menu without issue.
So apparently there's a bug in GOG Galaxy, the client forces the game to update to version GOG-3 (the actual installer is version GOG-4) where the disappearing skill bug is in effect. I ended up installing the game from the installer and not from Galaxy and after opening Galaxy I aborted the automatic update and then I disabled it.

That apparently fixes the bugs but just in case follow erdrick28 tip of disabling hardware mouse for the menu bug, so yeah Galaxy is not updating to the latest version...
I hope the GOG peeps address the Galaxy not updating to GOG-4 version of the game issue tomorrow, as I enjoy using Galaxy and would like it to update the game to the latest -- and skill slot bug free -- version.

It's fixed now :) Sorry for the hassle :)
not sure if this is the right place; but I downloaded the gog-4 version and cannot get it to launch; I get Failed to initialize Direct3D.

anyone have any idea how I can get it to run?

*edit* downloading it now with the galaxy; going so slow tho =/

There is a configuration utility in the same place the game's executable is located. Please use that utility to configure the game for your system :)
I have no idea how that worked, only changed the resolution...but it worked using the config file :) tyvm!
game looks fun...if I weren't already bogged down in my backlog I'd try this one out. i'll definitely keep it in mind for a future sale though. thanks, Nihon Falcom Corporation / XSEED Games / GOG!

hope you bring even more of your catalog here. =)
Game is a blast. Still waiting to have the achievements reset because at least one of them is bugged.
This is quite fun once you get settled into it. And I'm playing the whole thing with pretty much just the mouse, only occasionally needing the keyboard. The graphics looks older than they are, but still an enjoyable if grind-y game.

amrit9037: Hi.
If you don't mind. May I ask you if your avatar is from Marathon series?
Few weeks ago I started playing The Marathon Trilogy and your avatar looks like it's logo.
Sorry I never got around to replying! Yes, my logo is from the Marathon Trilogy. It was one of the very first games I ever played (alongside the original Descent and Spectre Supreme, which came bundled with my first Mac).

It was also my first experience with DRM -- the original copy of Infinity that I got for Christmas had a defective serial number, which left my game completely unplayable. Eventually I got a free copy of Marathon 2: Durandal with my (at the time) awesome SCSI Iomega ZIP drive, and the rest was history. I was hooked. I later got the uber-expensive Trilogy Box Set as a gift (complete with gorgeous art from Craig Mullins). It was the best $125 my family ever spent on me. My only regret was that I didn't keep the original box and the stickers and books all intact, and that I didn't keep my defunct original copy of Infinity that came in its pyramidal silver box.

I really have a soft spot for Marathon. It's the unsung FPS which gave us Halo, which popularized dual-wielding in multiplayer/single-player FPS, and pioneered the FPS as a story-driven immersive single-player campaign with a deep, thought-provoking meta-narrative. Without it, Bungie Software wouldn't even exist, let alone be the creative powerhouse it would later become.

Even more remarkable were the fan creations that came out of it: fan-made total conversion scenarios that were complete standalone games, yet were basically commercial quality, if not close to it. Tempus Irae/TI2, Marathon RED, Marathon: Evil, Marathon Rubicon, Excalibur: Morgana's Revenge, and Marathon Eternal X all come to mind here. If you enjoyed Marathon, you'll get many, many, many more hours worth of gameplay from these games.

Wow, that's one hell of a reply.
That sure does explain your love for Marathon Trilogy.
Thank you.
I did play Excalibur: Morgana's Revenge for some times after downloading Marathon.
I will sure try other recommendation.
