A night to remember.

Thimbleweed Park, a delightfully surreal point & click adventure by the creators of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com!

This murder, it really ties the town together, man. A town already haunted by dark secrets and built on sins. Now five eccentric individuals will start poking around, each for their own reasons. Little do they know that they've become the unwitting catalysts for a fateful night full of bizarre events, brain-twisting puzzles, and weaponised sarcasm.

For some additional insight, check out our interview with Ron Gilbert, the mind behind Thimbleweed Park and a few other classics you may have heard of.

drealmer7: Honestly, I'd be a lot more interested in this if they characters heads weren't so frikken big. Why are the heads so big? This happens a lot in games and it's extremely annoying.
avatar
Leroux: Because they were like that in the older games Thimbleweek Park is paying homage to. If that's putting you off already, you should skip it, because even though it's pretty good, it's also pure nostalgic fan service. And there are far more absurd things in it than big heads.
hmmm I don't remember playing any games like back in the day, but then I probably stayed away from them because "big heads"

I was referring to Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken, although looking at the screenshots now, it seems that this was specific to Maniac Mansion only. In Zak McKracken the proportions are more realistic already. But there are a lot of references to Maniac Mansion in Thimbleweed Park. Personally I never really thought about the heads, never saw this as an issue, as long as it's a consistent style.

Finally found time to beat the game.
It is damn GREAT!

Thimbleweed Park is a very good Maniac Mansion 3.
My only complain is, you can not play games on the in-game computer.

UPDATE: I mean the computer in the mansion, not the computer in the factory.

Don't worry. Gilbert intends to issue a patch eventually that opens the Thimbleweed Park Arcade.

If that makes the game perfect for you... it will be a perfect game. :) :)
I looks neat, but damn, the reviews are so-so : (

I thought the reviews were mostly positive and rightly so it's a great game. May not be as appealing to people that didn't grow up playing old adventure games especially the Lucasarts ones.

krugos2: So happy about this, I enjoyed the developers' blogs through the whole process, big fan of the talent involved in the making of this game (I learned English playing Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken at my Commodore 64). I hope the game sells well and Ron, Gary and the rest of the team make more games in this style.

I was looking forward to a first day buy, but I'm broke, so it will have to wait for a while... ah, the joys of living in the country with the worst economy in the world. :(
Well, the game is not going anywhere, and I still have other games to keep me entertained for a while. :)
Same here. To be honest, I started with graphical adventures, and 2 dictionaries, but when I first played Zak on my C64, that's when I fell forever in love with adventure games. (And the closest I came to abandon them was Syberia. Rust in hell, Oscar!)

If you really want to abandon your backlog and play Thimbleweed Park, PM me!

It's a solid five stars and fifth in GOG's catalog by user rating among adventures.

Honestly, I haven't really seen many bad or lukewarm reviews, in fact it has received so much praise that I wondered whether I was overly critical in not joining the chorus and instead pointing out issues that apparantly weren't issues at all to other players. I think whether you'll like it or not depends on what you expect.

If you are looking for a great self-contained plot with a totally satisfying conclusion, if you had issues with the ending of Monkey Island 2, if you dislike games breaking the fourth wall or including content made by backers, if you are sick of the same old adventure game jokes, spoofs and references and aren't interested in nostalgia, retro gaming, pixel graphics and big heads, then you will probably find something to criticize here.

But even if you do, it's still a very nice game overall, despite the hype surrounding it.

Eh, that's one of the critiques that bothers me :\

MI2 ending was great!

Depends if it isn't too frequent and cringeworthy..

There is some nice story-telling in it, I thought the characters and how they are introduced cool, but the plot is pretty absurd and non-sensical, and the fourth wall breaking is an essential part of it. Contrary to some other players, I didn't think the ending was disappointing, I thought it was quite fitting for a game that begins like it does, and if you accept that, it can be fun. I was just a little disappointed by the whole concept and the somewhat unconvincing build-up to that ending, especially in the beginning of the game. Even if you accept the concept, it could have been implemented with more consistency.

I was fine with it myself. In the early 90's, that is. I'm also fine with big heads. :)

I guess that's a matter of personal taste as well. I thought many instances of the fourth wall breaking were more cringeworthy than funny, and not very original either, but on the whole it isn't too frequent, mostly in the beginning, I think. The backer content is restricted to book titles in shelves (at least half of the books even have two pages you can read) and to voicemail recordings if you call random people in the phone book, so I guess you can easily avoid it if it doesn't interest you. The quality of the content varies strongly, some is actually funny (possibly even funnier than the official writing), but most of it is really lame and cringeworthy.
