Take command of the greatest Star Wars™ battles!

Star Wars™ Galactic Battlegrounds Saga, an RTS classic depicting major conflicts of the Star Wars™ films, is available for the first time in digital distribution on GOG.com!

Released in 2001, Star Wars™ Galactic Battlegrounds was the first Star Wars™ RTS to find success among critics and fans alike. The game's basic formula was a recipe for success. It employed tried and tested gameplay mechanics inspired by the critically acclaimed Age of Empires series (Star Wars™ Galactic Battlegrounds was developed on the very same engine, which contributed to its overall familiar feel), and brought them straight into the realm of Star Wars™, offering fans a brand new way to influence the major conflicts depicted in Star Wars™ films.

The package available here includes the Clone Campaigns expansion pack, which introduced a whole new campaign covering the start of the Clone Wars, with two extra playable factions (CIS and Galactic Republic) and a slew of additional units. In total, Star Wars™ Galactic Battlegrounds Saga includes an impressive eight playable factions, each with its own story-filled single player campaign.

Take direct command of the greatest movie battles in Star Wars™ Galactic Battlegrounds Saga, DRM-free on Windows - for the first time in digital distribution - on GOG.com!

Wan't to see the game in action? Here's Star Wars™ Galactic Battlegrounds Saga wit <hb>Quill18 in the Twitch.tv/GOGcom archive.

tinyE: Lucas explained this. When he got to doing Jedi he wanted a race that was primitive but by that time he already showed that Wookies could operate blasters and fly star cruisers. It wouldn't have worked to show up on Chewie's home planet and see a bunch of Wookies using sling shots.

HunchBluntley: I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask to see your Nerd card. Any TRUE Star Wars geek knows how to spell "Wookiee" correctly. =)
Oh shit!
Seriously, that is bad. :-(

I wouldn't feel this bad if I spelled my kids' names wrong. If I had kids.

...Well...I'll just let you off with a warning this time, but see that it doesn't happen again.

With regards to your question earlier: Quill18 apparently went into Galactic Battlegrounds blind (I assume that's what the "BLIND" in the stream's title means, anyway; he's certainly not wearing a blindfold). As far as whether he "sucks" or not, he's not a hyperactive idiot who's screaming all the time, if that's what you meant. I've only watched the This War of Mine stream and a little bit of the current one, but he's about as competent as one can be when playing a game for the first time.

Oh wow, I am devastated. I never noticed that's how you spell it, or was that extra 'e' added on years later by Lucas?

What, do you mean something like, "They added the extra "e" in with CGI for new re-release editions of the film novelizations"? Nope, that's been the official spelling since well before all the Lucasfilm-licensed novels started coming out in the Nineties (which is when I started getting into Star Wars. I think the "one 'e' " spelling has been occasionally (erroneously) used over the years, especially in early mentions -- books and licensed tie-in products in the '70s and '80s, I would imagine -- but, as TinyE's chagrin indicates, most Star Wars geeks are aware of the (admittedly peculiar) correct spelling, even though they may forget to use it from time to time. =)
So in response to the OP and this game in general, I have no idea what Age of Empires is about, but, from the video, this game reminds me quite a bit of Starcraft. How much so? A lot? Not at all?

I'm not the OP but if I may, Star Craft (talking about SC #1) while great is somewhat primitive to this, in the same way that AoE is primitive to AoE 2. They all carry a similar pace and over all basic structure: collect resources, build, upgrade, plan, attack and mix in a few siege levels from time to time. They obviously have totally different looks fundamentally as the SW universe really looks nothing like the SC universe and Zergs look nothing like Sith, although if you were drunk you might mistake Vader for a Protos in black.

Nah, I wouldn't actually rank them on a scale of complexity. You can reasonably split the base-building RTS genre between War/Starcraft, Command & Conquer, and Age of Empires. Every other game has been an approximation of one of these three, and can be adequately compared to them in simplicity or complexity. Between the three, however, it's hard to draw comparisons.

And from what I saw, this is a glorified AoK mod, and not a very good one at that. I'm pretty sure even base AoK had better pathfinding, the flames on burning buildings looked incredibly out-of-place, and I won't even comment on droids picking berries. Yikes!

Ouch! XD Not a Star Wars fan? :P This is actually my favorite RTS out there. And whats wrong with a droid picking berries?

I love Star Wars! I love good Star Wars games! I was eager to see this one, as I'd never tried it before, and I also like AoK. Sadly, what I saw was just what I've described. Hell, the siege cannon was just a re-skinned trebuchet, right down to the stats and frames!

Easy Spinorial, we're friends here, sorry if I upset you. :D Yes it is AoE with a SW frame, but it does enough with the SW characters, mythos, and sounds to make it a blast for me. Of course I don't have any taste so I'm always weary about recommending anything to anyone regardless of how much I love it. :D

Haven't two years of bromance taught you anything?! I was just sharing my observations. If at all, I'd be upset at the game, not you ;) Besides, I have my own fair share of guilty pleasures.

Thank god! I was beginning to think I really fucked up there. :D
Thanks! I may give it a shot. Thing about SC (speaking as a single-player) is it just had the perfect mix of everything - planning, base-building, sparring, then full-on combat. And, with a proper base and layout, one could play long defensive missions to boot.

Heh, most people actually find that turtling bad about SC, but it was indeed a singularly great game!

The other day I reinstalled SC and oddly enough the only thing that really really really bothered me were the queue limits and the grouping limits. The other stuff I could manage to overlook.
