FPS Immortals are here.

Quake II: Quad Damage, Quake III: Gold, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny - are available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. You can pick them up at 33% off in two bundles:
Quake Damage & Return to Wolfenstein.

Wolfenstein 3D (with Spear of Destiny) is widely considered to be the first true 3D FPS ever. It single handedly kickstarted a generation of id Software greats, and thus influenced just about every FPS we've played ever since. Its mazes, shades of gray, and blue hues are burned into the collective gaming memory - plus you get to kill a mechanized Hitler. Classic.
In the early days of FPS gaming, Quake II: Quad Damage was the milestone. In a spot-on review from 1997, GameSpot calls it "the only first-person shooter to render the original Quake entirely obsolete." It was bigger, better, prettier, and smoother than any clone or predecessor - it also offered one of the most playable, and by far most popular multiplayer experiences of its day.
Quake III: Gold, aka. multiplayer revolution. Despite a controversial removal of the lauded single-player experience the series was known for, Quake III: Arena became a smash-hit and (together with Unreal Tournament) essentially defined arena-style, movement-based competitive gaming for years. The shooter spawned a community that's been living and breathing to this day.
In B.J. Blazkowicz's Return to Castle Wolfenstein, another legend is born. A unique, objective-based multiplayer mode saw immense popularity back in the day - and it was actually pretty okay if you're into that sort of thing. The single-player campaign is a dark, somewhat ridiculous freak show of morbid, scientific fantasy. An ever present sense of dread emanates from the disturbing experiments and cult-like universe, just waiting to be set afire - by you.

As with any Bethesda purchase, you'll also get The Elder Scrolls: Arena & Daggerfall for free!

Prepare to fight in Quake II: Quad Damage, Quake III: Gold, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny - now DRM-free on GOG.com. Return to the FPS immortals at 33% off in two bundles: Quake Damage & Return to Wolfenstein. The promo will last for one week, until October 8, 12:59 PM GMT.

The four titles released today are not available for purchase in Germany. These are legal restrictions that are beyond our control, and we're very sorry for the inconvenience.

apehater: i bought there singularity some years ago and they didn't ask me about my age, paid with paypal.
That's surprising.

shmerl: Yeah, we need Heretic and Hexen here too! I like those more than Doom and Quake.
I love Heretic too! :)
The region lock is really no surprise when you look how Bethesda is acting with the newer Wolfenstein titles. You can't even start them with a German IP in their uncensored versions. I am really glad to still have my old retail versions.

DCT: yes in fact they do.
avatar
triple_l: I'm a veteran wolf3d fan and never heard about this.
I went to wiki and they say its from 94 and from the original publisher? really?
Are the screenshots I can't identify from these so called "lost episodes"?
one thing for sure it doesn't have id's quality and it looks like some fan made map
yes they are from the lost episodes. Not sure who actually made them but they were published by FormGen who also released Spear of Destiny(Id had nothing to do with Spear outside of saying "go ahead" since they were doing Doom at the time) and the reason why they look different is because the Wolf3d engine was not meant to be modded so everything had to had been remade from the ground up meaning new walls, new sprites, ect.

PaterAlf: That's surprising.
I think it was the same when I ordered the (uncut) US version of Fallout 3 there (which I mostly needed for the "Wanderer's Edition"-TC).
avatar
DCT: they are from the two spear of destiny add ons that are included with SOD, so no they shouldn't be removed.
avatar
triple_l: i don't buy these "lost episodes"
its a cheap gimick from someone to gain extra bucks
it has no historical value
and besides its the first screenshot you see when you load the page and its ugly
Pixelmaster Adrian Carmack would never do those mediocre textures
At least the textures are better than the sprites, which are completely either horrible or simple color swaps. Some of the textures are nice.

The worst part is the level design: there are several mandatory secret rooms (with keys to locked doors on the way to the exit).
Those are classics and belong here. Unfortunately FPS are not my cup of tea..Likely in the future I'll pick Wolfenstein (played it a bit in the past) but mainly to to get Daggerfall and Arena.
Congratulations to GOG for getting these games here!

Nergal01: The Lost Episodes were made by another developer (FormGen), and they feature a very different look and a much more maze-like level design. Also, all enemy sprites and voice files were replaced. Some of them look more like the real deal, especially the SS-guys in their black uniforms. Also, the voice samples actually sound like real German this time around.
more is not always better
exactly the same happens with painkiller
it has endless expansions which GOG doesn't sell cause they know only PCF can do Painkiller
with Spear of Destiny and id its exactly the same so including more in the package just to make it bigger is for me a wrong decision

mk47at: No, it isn't! Please check the applicable laws. More information at the bottom of the post.

I'm probably going to be downvoted, but I don't care...

You know that this simply isn't true for the Quake titles. It is perfectly legal to sell all Quake titles to persons that are older than 18 years!

synfresh: How exactly do you expect GoG to age verify on here?
The same way every other company here in Germany does: Postident. This is the most popular and simple way, but there are many others. GOG wants to expand in german market, right? Than how about learning how it works first!
It would be so awesome if the got the 2009 Wolfenstein.

That's the only one in the series that you can't get digitally at the moment.

My physical copy has an Activision logo on the back cover, I'm pretty sure that's part of the problem...

This. I was really excited to see that there was a bundle. I knew it was unlikely but was really hoping that 2009 was included. Still, it's great to see these classics make their way to GOG.
Now all we need is Heretic and the Commander Keen games.
