Power overwhelming.

<span class="bold">Eradicator</span>, a cult shooter where you venture into a hostile fortress that holds galaxy's most precious element, is available now for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

Let's face it, building a sprawling citadel on a mysterious alien planet wasn't a very good idea to begin with. But somebody decided it was worth taking the risk as Ioxia is the only planet able to provide mankind with the valuable element Mazrium. Now the mysterious forces that were lying dormant at its core for all these years have awoken and all hell breaks loose. The situation calls for gun-blazing action. For explosive bravado. For an Eradicator.

You choose between Dan, Eleena, and lizardman Kamchak, grab as many weapons as you can carry, and enter the fortress to face the ugly hordes that have been unleashed. The gameplay will vary depending on the character you pick but one thing is for sure: you'll get to kick plenty of spiky alien buttocks. And when you need a breather, you can get down to solving the tantalizing puzzles found within the 25 levels of the vast citadel. The ability to toggle between 1st-person and 3rd-person view is bound to come in handy here.

Get geared up and blast the citadel clean of alien rabble as the <span class="bold">Eradicator</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until March 1st, 1:59 PM GMT.

hyperagathon: but...this doesn't appear to be open source - I mean, the irony in that, you could shoot it with a sawed-off :)
Lucius will open the source when it's ready, he has already a GitHub repo for the XL Engine, but it's not always at the latest point.

Is there a way to look up/down in this game? Or is it like Doom where the game automatically auto aims up/down for the player?

Yes, there is. Go to the options, configure controls and you should see an option called "Mouse/Joystick Aiming (Mouselook)". Select Always On and you should be able to look/aim up or down. You might also have to invert the vertical axis and adjust the vertical sensitivity (also available from the same page).

hyperagathon: Also, I admit I have no idea why Dark Forces, that one works fine under DOSBox.

toxicTom: Dark Forces is in dire need of proper mouselook (looking up and down is keyboard only, and yes, you need it for those pesky ceiling turrets - they are level geometry and not auto-aimed at). And a save features. Later levels can take hours to explore -with no save in between - one reason I can't play the game any more. I simply don't have the time.
Higher resolutions are obviously nice too.
You can go to the site I linked and download the alpha version of DarkXL, which has been around for years and works mostly fine.

Thanks! Also, is there a way to reconfigure the mouse buttons in-game? When I go into the control options, it won't let me select the mouse controls at the bottom.

IronArcturus: Interesting! So does it have MIDI or CD music?
The game uses CD audio.

hyperagathon: I saw this when I went to the Blood subforum in hopes of finding something like that :) One blog post claims he has got Shadow Warrior working as well, which made me quite happy. Arguably it isn't as problematic as Blood - as long as you're using either Windows (updated source port, presumably works) or Steam (the Redux version). The only Linux source port dates to 2005, and when I did finally managed to compile it, it promptly segfaulted all over the place. So yeah, I'm hoping this guy perserveres, but...this doesn't appear to be open source - I mean, the irony in that, you could shoot it with a sawed-off :) Also, I admit I have no idea why Dark Forces, that one works fine under DOSBox.
It's definitely not as big a deal as Blood, as the source code for SW has been available for a while now. SW Redux is available on Linux (Ubuntu 12.04 listed under Linux OS), but I'm not sure if it's native or not (plus I know a lot of people here don't like/use Steam). Still, no reason to complain about more options, though bear in mind XL Engine for Linux is planned after Windows & Mac.

As for whether or not it's an open source project, I believe it is. The author has held off on releasing it until he's brought it to a satisfactory state, which irritated a huge portion of the community when the project went on a several year hiatus. Anyways, I believe he's now allowed access to some of the code on Github, which you can find more info on in the forums over there.

It might not be particularly apparent, but go to the action you want to bind a mouse button to (like jump), press enter and then the mouse button you wish to bind the action to (like the right click). You'll know it's working because the mouse buttons' actions below will be changing to the ones you assigned them to.

Yeah, that fixed it for me. Thanks again! :)
Keep 'em coming Nightdive. =)
Why I never heard of this FPS before? Is it a Build engine game?

Grargar: Helpful stuff.
Danke schön.

You convinced me to take a "risk" and buy it.
I played it 'back then'. Not all that good, but I remember that it had a truckload of different weapons. Discovering new guns kept me playing for a while. No multiplayer? Too bad.

Maybe I'll try and see if I can get my old CD-rom up and running with some dosbox.
