Hello darkness, my old friend.

<span class="bold">Downfall: Redux</span>, the bold reimagining of the twisted horror adventure game, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 10% launch discount. Buyers will also get the original Downfall for free.

Sustaining a healthy marriage through the years can be an uphill battle. Joe and Ivy thought they could pull it off but now the cracks are beginning to show. Joe books them a romantic getaway to the Quiet Haven Hotel, convinced that they can still fix this. But his wife is behaving strangely, as though she doesn't even want them to try. And this place.. The Quiet Haven Hotel is not at all how Joe had imagined it. Or perhaps it is exactly like that.

Downfall: Redux is a completely overhauled retelling of Joe Davis' bloody, desperate struggle to win back his wife. Like in the haunting The Cat Lady, the adult themes, the grotesque images, and the macabre story will stay with you long after your visit at the Quiet Haven Hotel has come to its disturbing end. And as with every gripping nightmare, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Dive into the abyss and swim alongside your most unspeakable nightmares as you descent into <span class="bold">Downfall: Redux</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com. Everyone who buys the game will also receive Downfall(2009) for free. Those who already own the original will find a 50% discount code for Downfall: Redux in their library. The code will be added to Downfall(2009) in your shelf and can be redeemed until March 15.
The 10% discount will also last until March 15, 4:59 PM GMT.

toxicTom: The OP said March 15, but omitted the year...
I've just used the code but didn't check the expiry date, sorry.

JudasIscariot: "The 10% discount will also last until March 15, 4:59 PM GMT."

Different discount :P That's the one for people who have never bought the original Downfall :)
This part might be what caused the confusion:

omega64: Wait really?
This seems really different to the original. More of a remake than an extended edition or whatever.
What's wrong with remakes?
Of a classic like Grim Fandango, for example? Nothing. It's a game that it's still played today by a lot of people & a few upgrades to the limitations of 20 years ago is a good thing - as long as the game itself remains unchanged.

The problem is that this is being abused. Everyone is releasing a game & remaking it almost immediately. Why?

avatar
toxicTom: Dawn of the Dead 2004 is no patch of Dawn of the Dead 1978...
Gabriel Knight 20th Anniverary is no patch for Gabriel Knight
Settlers 2 10th Anniversary is no patch for Settlers 2.

The developer re-made his own game from scratch, to create a (in his perception) better version of it. Now he kindly asks money for his work. He and GOG are even so kind as to ask only half of the price if you own the original. So you pay what? In Germany the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes and a beer. And nobody forces you to buy that remake.

I don't get how people can get that aggravated about things like this.
Some games and/or movies I see the point, as I stated just above. Certain movies especially, when they had to be cut due to being deemed being too long or other moronic reason. But even in movies this has been abused.

In games, though, it's become just plain ridiculous. Imagine a writer publishing a book just to oublish a revided edition 6 months later.

If you're not happy with the story, why publish it? And if you have a brain fart 2 months later & decide that things should've happened differently, well though luck. Write a new book. Or a new game.

Some games don't even reach the age of heavy discounts before being re-released again.

If Monkey Island had been released today, it would've been reduxed in less than a year to change the story in a way that LeChuck would come back to life & Guybrush would dump Elaine & get it on with the reincarnated hunk. And the tone would be shifted from a comedy game to a meaningful experience, whatever that means.

Bottom line, did you release a game & have a new idea? Do what everyone did for thousands of years & create NEW stuff from that idea & leave your finished products alone. Unless they're not finished, which brings us back to paying for patches.

Say no to iffy commercial practices, kids. This is worse than DLC.

CharlesGrey: Regardless of who is or isn't getting a good deal here, is the game itself any good? Seems like it's supposed to be along the lines of Silent Hill 2 except in 2D, presumably minus the ( mostly annoying ) combat? I read something about keyboard controls -- does that mean you can't just play it with the mouse, like a conventional P&C Adventure game?
It's a side scrolling point & click game. So you use the A + D arrows or <- and -> arrows to move and the up arrow (or W) to select an item and Enter to interact with it. You can try the demo over at the publisher's site www.screen7.co.uk

Personally I HIGHLY enjoyed Downfall and The Cat Lady, the remake SHOULD be as good as them as it's basically Downfall remade in the image of The Cat Lady with some new content thrown (both gameplay parts and voice acting and a new soundtrack). I wasn't that impressed by the demo of the remake but it still seems like a good game. Even if the remake isn't as good as the original well...you still get the original, which was great.
Really appreciate the -50% discount for those that already own the original game, devs. Happy to support your wonderful games which happen to be right up my darkened alley.
"Completely overhauled" is not actually useful information that helps me make a purchasing decision.

I reviewed the original, but I guess those reviews are lost now that the store page is gone. I thought it had a good atmosphere, fair but pedestrian puzzles, and an ending that wanted to be shocking but which I thought was kind of silly. I can't really give details, partly because of spoilers but mainly because I don't remember them; "a macabre story will stay with you long after your visit at the Quiet Haven Hotel has come to its disturbing end," indeed.

drealmer7: Can we get some more details as to what exactly has changed? I'm not really a fan of Reduxes or Remasters or Re-imaginings because I view things like this as artistic creations and the creators should go into their creating making it how they want to make it in the first place. Years later deciding to "George Lucas" something, is not cool, imo.

Pretty much the only things said about the changes are:

"the bold reimagining" and "a completely overhauled retelling"

and that doesn't actually tell us a single frikken thing about what's changed, ya know?!

Ugh.
There is a new soundtrack, there is now voice acting, the perspective has changed to that of a side scroller, the inventory has been redone as has the way interaction is handled. There have also been some new gameplay bits added and some taken out apparently. Basically the entire game has been remade in the style of The Cat Lady, keeping only the story (for the most part).

As far as I know you can still download the original for free at the publisher's website www.screen7.co.uk and while you're there you can grab a demo of the remake and compare them side by side.

Dalthnock: That's it, I'm drawing the line here on this latest fad.

And what's more, I was beginning to purchase new games, but now that's over.

I will just wait until the game is really, really old to make sure there are no "redux" or "definitive" or whatever else.

I guess supporting developers is a mug's game? You give them an inch, they'll ravage your wallet.

Pity it was an apparently independent developer that broke the camel's back for me, but I refuse to support this ridiculous concept any more.

I'm tired of being dick-slapped in the face. Paying for patches is just retarded.
This case has nothing to do with patches. It is practically a new game. Content wise, sound wise, graphic wise, control wise. I get your point and think likewise, but in this case you have judged too early.

Except Grim Fandango was changed. Simply changing the music means the game has changed significantly enough to warrant my disinterest in a game I've been wanting to play since it was originally released and still haven't gotten to.

huppumies: I really liked the dark atmosphere of Downfall, but not sure if getting this one. Anyway, nice release.

vicklemos: Quite shocking, isn't it?
I got this one and I'm amazed that they changed a ton of things, and it looks that it's for the best (I mean, "dirty diapers" best).
Hopefully, that original atmosphere is still out there!

JudasIscariot: Feb 11 2026. You got 11 years to make up your mind :P

vicklemos: Thought it would expire in March 15..
I bet that some """brave""" dudes will buy this one and won't play it in 11 years.. you know, they're so brave ;D
It does. That was my bad on the expiry date :)

Downfall is from 2009. That's 7 years ago. Remigiusz Michalski probably didn't have the money and resources and even skill to make the game as perfect as he wanted it to be. Now he has, and with new possibilities he decided to remake the game.

Like a painter who couldn't afford expensive color who decides to remake an earlier piece of "cheaper" material value into something more elaborate after his first successes, because this piece of art is important to him, and he want to show it to the audience they way he envisioned it. A lot of film directors went that way too - remaking their own early works, but with a better budget.

And, actually, the developer is taking a greater risk that way. Michalski's games are works of art, they're NOT Call of Duty, Yearly Edition. He put all the effort of creating a new game from scratch into something that most of his target audience will probably already have. And all those people will either not buy the remake (don't like it, whatever) or pay only half the price.
Had he instead put that effort into a new game "by the creator of The Cat Lady and Downfall" I'm pretty sure he would make more money out of it.

I don't know if the remake is good (I'm glad the original is included (and free here: http://www.quiethavenhotel.co.uk/)) - directors often failed to capture that made the original work. But to allege greed in this case is stupid and malevolent.

Damn, almost one year too late!!!

Not your day, Judas? Need some hugs? :-)

PS: I also still live in 2015 quite often...

Superb! Waited a long time for this.
"The Cat Lady" was one of the best adventure experiences I had.
And this seems to be pretty similar, so instabuy!

Thank you! and thanks GOG!!

I think it's worth noting that many of the reasons behind this "remake" are because of the partnership between Screen 7 and Harvester Games. If you remember, the original Downfall had nothing to do with Screen 7. Since the partnership began with the release of The Cat Lady, we wanted to bring our product range in line and Downfall seemed like a good step for the developer to continue, as others have said, the vision for the "TCL Universe" or whatever you might call it.

If anyone is to blame then it's Screen 7 for asking Harvester Games to make a brand new edition of Downfall. Michalski had no intention of that initially, but as I explained to him, Screen 7 has nothing to do with the original so it doesn't reflect our partnership at all, we could not fix it, update it or modify it in anyway to reflect our working together, so he embraced the decision to remake it so we could further our work together (and maybe vision, we like making games!)

Downfall now sits properly within a trilogy (the third game will be underway soon enough). The original Downfall 2009 version is not forgotten, but fans of that need to understand it's a product that has very little weight with Screen 7, who now pretty much represent Harvester Games and their works. This is not a cash grab, this is ensuring our partnership works. And hopefully for players, it means experiencing new and interesting things, even if in some ways they are "old" or have existed in some ways before.

Just wanted to put that out there, I think it's fine that some people may be concerned about this as a simple makeover or a marketing strategy or something, but it isn't supposed to be like that. Perhaps it's more enjoyable than the original and perhaps its not to some people, but if you enjoyed The Cat Lady, the redux here is an important step if you're on board with this trilogy. If you are just going to hold onto the original, that's also fine, but please understand it had its time and its place, Screen 7 and Harvester Games have moved on, working with what we've got and what we've learned from The Cat Lady experience, and I think it's for the better - even if it seems like we are creating some kind of Downfall DLC... ;)

Hope you enjoy it though!
