Blizzard Entertainment and GOG.COM have teamed up to rerelease select classic Blizzard games, beginning with Diablo®, Blizzard’s legendary 1996 action role-playing game that introduced players to the harsh—and deeply rewarding—world of Sanctuary.

The original Diablo® is available now via digital distribution for the first time ever on GOG.COM. Players looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service.

Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, and a host of bug fixes. Players can choose either version of the game from a launcher.
I didn't expect Blizzard to bring this game to GoG, since Starcraft Updated/Remastered went through modern Battle.net. Since there are more on the way I'm hopeful for warcraft I and II.
Wait whaaat?

What the...

Am I actually awake?
Do we have to thank Diablo Immortal for this?

firstpastthepost: I guess they are trying to squeeze as much money out of Blizzard as they can after all....

In any case, this is an amazing release and one that I never would have thought would happen.

BleepBl00p: Pretty sure it's Blizzard who is squeezing GOG, not the other way around.
I was referring to Blizzards parent company, not to GoG. They did just lay off a huge portion of Blizzards workforce afterall.
Whoa, great job! That's certainly unexpected but most welcome addition!
I had to punch me in the face a few times because I thought I was just seeing things that are not there. But no, it really happened. AMAZING!

Sounds like Battle.net exclusivity hasn't been panning out the way that Activision had been hoping.

Anyhow, this is awesome stuff, and almost certainly means that we'll be seeing stuff like Diablo 2, Warcraft 1-3, and the Lost Vikings games (perhaps the first one, StarCraft and Blackthorne as freebies given that they've long been free on Battle.net).

With any luck we might even see StarCraft 2 pop up here. Diablo 3 is less likely, unless Activision is willing to produce a bespoke DRM-free version akin to the console versions' approach.
This should revive the multiplayer scene of diablo 1 , the online is simple and super fun

MMLN: Any chance of bringing along also the Hellfire expansion?
Back "in the day" it was common for like any Tom Dick and Harry operation to make an expansion - some of those bootleg expansion operations eventually went on to become "real" development studios. Hellfire was made by some strange little company so it'd probably require a lot more digging to get that one here.

Fun fact - there were companies that would put out boxes like every other month of "maps" for games like Warcraft - or pretty much anything with a scenario editor - and sell them LOL. Even back then I never really understood *quite* how that was legal, but it happened ALL THE TIME.

Imagine that in this day and age!
Just a litttle bit worried that when/if D2 and Starcraft hits that they will charge like 20 bucks.
I hope this is a sign of things to come. I wouldn't look away from Starcraft 1 and 2 if they were here, that's sure!
Edit: stupid double post...

Wow, this was truly unexpected. One of my all-time favourites here. And first time ever in a digital format. This is truly a great achievement for GoG, and gaming as a whole! You are awesome!
Well, I am surprised at this release, seemingly out of nowhere. Instabought.
