apehater: price is just way too high! its a ripoff
While I agree that the price point is a bit higher than I'd hoped...

... the game is GREAT...

... and the price IMHO is far from outrageous.

Not sure the price point you were hoping for...

... but I'm sure sales in 3 - 6 months will probably come in under $10.
This game is great and finally back in a DRM free home.
Added to wishlist.

dragonslayerxxx: So just to be sure if opposite is true, if you buy this new updated version, you get OG free as separate entry as well?
avatar
greyhat: You do get access to the original version but it is not listed as a separate entry or download. It is bundled with the new versions installation in a folder named classic.
Thank you and Exsurgent for clarification. It seem they've even mention it on front store page:

''Includes original Legacy version of the game with partial Windows 10 compatibility.
You can access the Legacy Build through Additional Executables section in GOG GALAXY or find it in the game folder.''
I found it hard to get an idea of what kind of game this is from description and screenshots.

A few Youtube reviews later...

Yep, these Dark Souls like games always confuse me. I know, this game is older - maybe DS should be called Severence-like...

I don't think that it's my thing (enough). BUT... I'm glad it returned to GOG anyway!

It's not Dark Souls like at all. It's beat em up with classic Tomb Raider platforming and crap-ton of bugs and jank.
Dark Souls is an RPG with metroidvania-like level design.

That's rather misleading. Severance isn't a "beat em up" and you can't platform as if it's Tomb Raider: there are short jumps to make but no climbing and limited exploration and puzzling.
It is close to Demons Souls in the sense of it being a realistic-ish fantasy combat slasher. Souls series isn't famous for being an RPG or metroidvania, it's famous for its punishing, tactical combat that you have to take seriously (ie not a "beat em up" or typical RPG slash em up). In that sense it owes plenty to Severance, which is built around the skill-based melee combat.

Saying "It's not Dark Souls like at all" seems to me to be deliberately misconstruing how these games feel to play.

It most certainly is a beat em up - Dark Souls combat doesn't play like a fighting game, Severance does. Dark Souls isn't a slasher since you can use magic or bows legitimately and make your own fighting style. And Dark Souls most certainly is famous for being RPG (see top RPG-s list of RPG Codex) and metroidvania (Yahtzee compares Dark Souls 1 to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night). It is a spiritual successor to From Software's King's Field series, after all.
Punishing tactical combat is present in plenty of Japanese beat em ups from the same period as Severance, titles such as Devil May Cry and Onimusha, and Souls reminds me more of Onimusha than Severance. Severance got more complex combat system which reminds me more of Soul Calibur series than Soulsborne series, only thing it shares with Soulsborne is perspective and stamina system, and stamina system is used differently in both games.
Great release!
I bought it yesterday, they haven't even bothered to add gamepad support ...

No it doesn't. Dark Souls owes absolutely nothing whatsoever to Severance: Blade of Darkness, and the Severance game had no relation at all to the creation of Dark Souls.

There is 99.9%+ chance that none of the Dark Souls devs ever even played Severance.

Just because you say so?

In any case: Soulsborne not owing anything to Severance - probably true.
99.9%+ chance that no Dark Souls dev ever even played Severance - probably false.
I just have seen that the new version of Blade of Darkness has been added to my account. And the legacy version has been added as an extra to the new version. Thanks SNEG and GOG! That's the proper way to make your customers enjoy the re-release of the game.
