Sjuan: I hope they produce remasters of the other two seasons.
Chances are good it seems, considering the devs have listed Season 2 and 3 at the top of the remaster's official site.

joppo: Bosco's original voice was perfectly fine. I don't care if a white guy voices a black character or the black guy voices the white... as long as the voices match the characters' personalities. Which they did.

This sort of decision is worse than useless, it's detrimental to the games.
Oh man. Here you go with the opposite side of the outrage coin.

Personally I wouldn't get angry if they didn't change it but I'm not angry that they did.

I see both sides: I enjoyed the original portrayal, but I can also appreciate why some people might (quite reasonably) find it offensive. It's not just the fact the actor is white, it's the fact he was doing a somewhat exaggerated racial stereotype voice.
I'm a bit disappointed that you've been sucked into the outrage vortex.

He wasn't doing any racial sterotype, he was playing a silly cartoon character.

Bu even if he was a racial sterotype, even if the character was actually offensive... that's the way it was. I would not find it a problem (or at least no nearly as much) if the character was re-cast for an enitrely new game. But altering an existing work to suit modern day ideology is a terrible and quite frankly terrifying idea. Are we going to digitally re-cast Mickey Rooney in a special edition of Breakfest at Tiffany's next? In this context this may sound silly, but ideas like this are downright orwellian.

I think creationists are hopelessly stupid, but I don't demand Professor Monkey-For-A-Head be removed from Earthworm Jim because Doug Tennapel created him as a mockery of people who believe in evolution. It's a character intentionally, specifically designed to insult me. And I. Don't. Care. I may rarely act like it, but I'm a grown man. I don't get upset over a cartoon character. I don't demand someone's work be altered or abolished for my fragile emotional comfort. That's insane, dangerous and flat-out wrong.

But don't you understand? There were no racial stereotypes in Earthworm Jim. Then it's allowed. Only when the colour of your skin is involved then you're allowed to complain and have the work you're offended by changed.

At risk of getting political, I think you're doing everyone a disservice by conflating an intellectual viewpoint with an oppressed minority where stereotyping was part and parcel of the oppression. I have never been oppressed for being an atheist and people were not enslaved because of it. The comparison is ridiculous and I'll leave it at that.

As for the game, I won't make a fuss if they keep the original voice or replace it. Those getting upset are acting just as "snowflakey" as the SJW-bogeymen they rail against.

Well, at least they're planning on giving those of us who bought the Telltale store version a discount too.

wolfsite: Honestly not sure about this one, I enjoy Sam & Max but the TellTale releases always felt just a bit off for some reason. Hope the developers get to make an original game in the IP in the future so they can show what they can do with the property themselves.
The first one was especially -hollow-, the second is -better-, but it took until the third series to really find the stride of feel, motion, and action.

I'm hoping this remaster adds some meat to the bones of the writing, among a graphical & engine shine up.

Thankfully, Sam & Max games are not of the school of your decisions (not) mattering.

I'm just annoyed at them going out of their way to appease racism claims that were never done, because there had never been any basis for such claims anyway. A disembodied voice, which is all that the actor leaves in a game, does not have a skin color.

Which is why I don't mind if the actor voicing a character is white, black, green with three suction cups, caucasian, asian, martian... As long as they do a good job with the voices I will gladly consume their product. It can't be any less racist than that!

I'm with Breja in this matter. Bosco is simply a silly character, not a jab at black-skinned people. I (and I am certain many in this forum) consider myself a bit nerdy and I don't enjoy Maniac Mansion any less because Bernard is a blatant nerd stereotype. I don't demand the game be redone with a more positive interpretation, I just chuckle at his silly clothes, hair and overall portrayal. It is a game that revels in being silly. Just like Sam and Max, you know.

I'm not even saying Bosco's new voice is worse right away. Who knows, maybe they managed to find someone who voices him even better than the original actor. I am just saying that the whole debacle is based on a non-issue to begin with. And also that, by restricting the pool of voice actors based on skin colors they might not end with the best voice the character could have.

Lastly, I have a question for you. You said that Bosco's original voice portrays a racial stereotype, which I assume you meant as in derogatory to black-skinned people. (I don't see it that way but that's subjective anyway.) So does it becomes okay if the stereotypes are just remade by a black guy? Or in case the supposed stereotypes have to be changed, how far does he have to go to appease this imaginary "racial outrage" crowd? Should the new Bosco have a Cockney accent? Speak like an oil magnate? Where is the limit?

MaxFulvus: No french dubbing while it was available
for the 2006 version ? No way !
From the remaster's website:
"What languages does Sam & Max Save the World Remastered include?

The game has English voice and subtitles in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, and Russian."

AB2012: WOW, what an "upgrade".

Original
"Remaster"

Nice wall textures there... Let me guess it'll be double the price too?

Edit: I paid £1.89 (£18.69 - 90% off) back in 2014, so even £15.49 -50% = £7.75 has quadrupled in price. Hard pass...
Hot damn that looks good. I'm a sucker for remasters and especially TellTale games. Pre-ordered.

Breja: Are we going to digitally re-cast Mickey Rooney in a special edition of Breakfest at Tiffany's next?
I would approve, but only under the condition that the character is recast with Chow Yun-Fat and the character is changed to a contract killer with a heart of gold who shoots 10 000 bad guys without having to reload a single time while white doves fly off in the background. We'll change the title to "Bloodshed at Tiffany's".
Good to see this popping up again.

Thanks for the FAQ. Without the french dubbing, it's not the same feeling for me, like for Season 3 which has only french subtitles. So I will pass !

MarkoH01: Now we finally know who bought the Sam and Max license
avatar
my name is vaughlte catte: We kind of already knew that, because the original unremastered versions were being sold on Steam by them for a while now.
Oh, I did not know that. Thought they have been removed from Steam and there was no reason for me to check it because I mostly don't use Steam.

Darvond: I'm hoping this remaster adds some meat to the bones of the writing, among a graphical & engine shine up.
Not sure if I understood you here correctly, but if you were hoping they'd change the story - in their faq they stated that they won't do that in respect of those who created the original.
