The free Shadwen Demo, where you can try out your silent killing techniques in a bleak medieval environment, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Time stands still, as Shadwen lurks behind a dark corner, wishing that the little girl cowering beside her didn't have to witness the brutal scene that is about to unfold. But maybe she won't. Perhaps there is another way to get past these guards, climb on that scaffold and continue on her mission to assassinate the king. Before you take any action time stands still, allowing you to change plans on the spot and even rewind failed attempts. Killing might not be necessary, as long as Shadwen manages to stay hidden.

In anticipation of the stealth-action game, where you move freely among the shadows of a gritty medieval setting, developers Frozenbyte are releasing the Shadwen Demo and GOG.com is jumping in on the action! You will have the opportunity to sample Shadwen's light-footed scaling and stealth-assassination mechanics in a fully-playable area of the game and win awesome prizes in the process. The demo will be available on our store between February 24th and February 29th but, once added, you will be able to access it from your GOG.com library forever. All individual scores of those playing the demo will contribute to a global community score; the higher the global tally, the lower Shadwen's launch price will be. Head here for more details.

GOG.com CONTEST
We decided to do something extra for all the GOGers out there who want to try the free demo, so we are launching our own parallel contest where you must lunge #fromtheshadows for a chance to win awesome Shadwen swag!

The basics:
—Grab the Shadwen Demo and reach the end of the level without raising alarms, suspicions, or your blade against the guards. Staying hidden earns you more points.
—Screenshot the stat screen: Complete the demo level scoring as many points as you can, then post the image(s) below or tweet them at twitter/GOGcom with the "#fromtheshadows @GOGcom" tags.
—Grab sweet swag: The 10 highest-scoring assassins will get a Shadwen t-shirt and a free copy of Shadwen, courtesy of Frozenbyte. In case more than 10 entries are tied for the top spots, their submissions will enter a raffle.

So put on your soft leather gloves, don your darkness-colored robes, and exercise your rope-throwing: unsung glory and awesome prizes await!
The event will last until February 29th. Winners will be announced in the forums soon afterwards.

Contest Winners Announced!
The winners are in!

Due to an in-game bug making it impossible to do an undetected + no kill run worth 1600 points, there was a bit of confusion about eligible entries. To make things fair, we considered both the never-detected runs (1100 points) and kill-everyone runs (1110 points) to be eligible for the grand prizes — but with no more than one entry per person.

Since there were more than 10 eligible entries, we ran a raffle powered by the random number generator at random.org

And the winners are:
RabidGears
Goatbrush
w0lf1k
LiefLayer
Sablelune
Aningan
Aceso
Pixelion
GothaBlutauge
@Asaldar_

Thanks for playing Shadwen on GOG! We'll be reaching out to the winners individually to get your T-Shirt sizes and addresses. In the meantime... stay hidden, friends.
A demo---in what for a world are we living now?!

So, hm.... what do I do with this? http://i.imgur.com/XyyiMXb.jpg

With the rewinding it is not difficult but I had a good time. Will keep an eye on this game. :)

XYCat: took me an hour. But I had a couple of level restarts and I also spent some time figuring out how to distract guards with the least amount of effort and resources. And also the girl you're supposed to be escorting behaves weird from time to time so it took some time to get her through the final run.

IronArcturus: Do you know how the grappling hook works? I can't figure out how to move around with it. It doesn't seem to support Shadwen's weight.
it's kind of a weird thing. I used it in such a way that I shot the hook someplace, then I jumped and shot it there in mid air. That way you can jump up to wherever you can shoot your hook. You can also swing on it from place to place.
Also you need to press it only once and it's hooked until you press the attack button. And for pulling objects you just shoot it at a box or something and then move the character around.

I wish the grappling hook was more intuitive like in Just Cause 2. One didn't need to "search" for a place to grapple, since the hook worked everywhere in the environment. :P
Okay I spend hours in this glitching everything out. I finally figured how to use the grappling hook at the last door. :')

Edit: removed image because at a later post I got 1110 points :D

ok it's not easy at all.
it's a really good demo, with a good replayability.
I already really love it.
it's also really hard, my first time I only got 510 points.

Now I will try to improve my points.

EDIT.
Improved in page 7

Just finished my first run.
Reversing the mistakes is more fun than starting over again and again for a perfect run.

EDIT: added image from 2nd run

Hah, you alerted even more guards than me? :D
Needs kill cam. The most satisfying part of executing a kill in Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, the Batman Arkham games, and the XCOM games were the dynamic kill cams.

Having some problems with bindings when using a wired 360 controller. The game is detecting it and I'm able to use it in-game however I can't get it to accept changes in the bindings menu. I'm trying to bind right bumper to enable/disable time (If I can do that then my main grumble with the game is taken care of. Time moving when you do works in Superhot but here it just feels awkward as I need to be able to maintain momentum of movement - *especially* when jumping and to be able to monitor the movement of guards). however when I use A or Cross to confirm that I want to change a binding then choose the new assignment the menu reverts to the top of its selections and doesn't record the change.

With this type of game analogue stick movement is a must for me so keyboard and mouse isn't going to be an option. FPS yes. Third person no.

I can use select/back to get into an inventory menu but I can't actually change or select anything either aside from moving a cursor around an inventory area (edit if I hold down the dpad or analogue stick I can *sometimes* cause the bottom row with traps on it to cycle through), I can move bodies but if I'm supposed to be looting them for trap components then I've no idea how I'm supposed to.

Nice atmosphere and animation. The music and visual style work well together but without being able to enable/disable time or to be more accurate make the binding changes and use the inventory the game for me falls flat on its arse. With those fixes or an explanation of what I'm doing wrong it's shaping up to be a solid title.
I can't seem to find much about the story. Looking at the player-character I wonder if the time-bending mechanic is some sort of witchcraft.
Demos on GOG? Yeah!
Demo with a contest on top? HELL YEAH!!

Looks like a very interesting game, i'll make sure i'll try it later since i enjoy stealth games. If my system can handle it that is haha!

ps. I hope more devs will make it a habit to provide GOG & it's customers with demos and i really hope this won't be the first & last DRM-Free demo we see here! Kudos to Frozenbyte!

In a demo crate world. ^^

(No there's no typo in my message above ;)

0Grapher: I see the somewhat worrisome trend that games with simplistic (often 2D) graphics require unrealistically powerful hardware and they still run badly.
avatar
marcusmaximus: Yeah, i don't mind if something like Witcher 3 doesn't' work but it annoys me when 2d or isometric games that look like they came from 1999 but just with higher resolutions don't work well.
Exactly and it's even more ridiculous if the game is in pseudo-16 bit. ;)

+1 for not killing anyone of the poor guard bastards! :D
