Considered pledging a $100, but... nah, twenty will have to do for now.

I wonder how many companies they pitched this before going for kickstart.
And I bet a couple of company "nah, no demand for something like that" -guys
are kicking themselves over this sometime next week.

I kicked in $20 for the early bird special. Hopefully they will reconsider the DRM, as that stuff annoys the heck out of me. Hopefully GOG would approach Obsidian about distributing the game, as it would be a lovely partnership in my opinion.

Taleroth: In their defense, developers/publishers do have the option to not use the DRM side of Steam. Paradox does it for several games.

Petrell: Do explain me how I can download standalone DRM free game installers and patches from Steam store without ever installing Steam Client? (You don't need to answer as there are no ways to do that. ;-) :-p) I might actually consider using Steam Store if they offered such options but I already know they never will.
It's a shifted goalpost. You were talking about DRM before. Now you're complaining about a distribution client. These are distinct things. Steam can do both. The DRM side can be turned off.

A steam game with the DRM turned off has about as much DRM as the gog website.

Agreed! I've been happy to see a few kickstarters make deals with GOG, like Carmageddon, Tex Murphy, and Broken Sword.

It's the best of both worlds for people - secure, manageable distribution without DRM. But if there are going to be Steam workshop and other integrated community features, can't blame Obsidian for looking at Steam.

So I can download standalone DRM free game installer and patches using steam client so I can install the game to my laptop without internet connection? ;-) :-p So I can uninstall steam client after installing steam game with full steamworks integration (without DRM part) and still run the game?

Pure bollocks. GoG is true DRM and client free. Steam is a pain in the ass.

I agree 100%. I would definitely back this project if that were to happen. Although, i don't think they really need my help.

For many games without the DRM, yes. It won't be a true installer, but the files usually transfer easy enough.

If the game doesn't have the DRM, correct. It won't continue to have steamworks features.

Uninstalling steam can have the bad side effect of deleting the steamapps folder, where the games are. Though that is changing since it seems steam will allow for custom install locations later this year. It's in the beta and all.

Maybe another reason for steam integration could be an online component. Steam could handle the matchmaking for online multiplayer. Baldur's Gate had online gameplay IIRC.
I'm very close to do a $20 pledge but I don't really want a steam copy, I want a GOG copy.

What are the chances they release this game here about 1 year after the initial release date? I won't dare touch the game at first anyway, this will have to be saved to be bug-free.

Steam only for the moment. I'm guessing it will take at least a couple of days for them to read through the comments and figure out that there are people asking for a DRM Free version.

From the FAQ:
How will I get my digital copy of the game?
We are still exploring the idea of offering number of options, but one of those is definitely going to be Steam.
They might release a DRM-free version if enough people ask for it...

Steam only? Insta-pass for me. People need to send a message to devs that that ain't cool. Also, why not work out how much $$ you need for Linux and Mac support at the start?
