sreamer17ydr: My question is this, sorry if this is a noob question or concern, but how come when someone posts anything on the gifting threads, or trading threads... you get low rated even if all you said was "great day, etc."?
I was told when I joined years ago, that people just low rate for no reason, but why do they penalize you for just using those boards?
As Vainamoinen said, there's a whole slew of reasons people get downvoted on this forum.
For the gifting thread in particular though, a lot of people tend to see it as "begging" and immediately downvote nigh any post in there that isn't giving away something (regardless of the fact that the thread was CREATED for that purpose, but there's no explaining the thought processes of some people).
You'll likely get downvoted in a similar way if you ever post in the "Ninja Giveaway" thread (it promotes open code-dropping, which is seen by many as a reason the scammers started coming here to begin with).
Maybe rep means things elsewhere, but it means nothing (perhaps even LESS than nothing) here. Ignore the numbers and judge people on their individual worth. If you ever get a "low rating", ignore it unless you see actual forum members telling you something's fishy.
Lucius_Malfoy: I disagree with people low rating members in giveaway threads just because they're "New User's". I am a "New User", but that dosen't mean that I am an alt user or just joined to get free games. I participate in a lot of threads, a few of which happen to be giveaways. But I always make sure that I meet the requirements and I am always grateful whether I win or lose.
I understand that people are weary of scammers, but this is basically discrimination against "New User's" and not a good way to get more people to join GOG.
That's just my opinion and I'm not trying to start a fight, nor am I blaming anyone. I just think that there should be a serious increase in moderation and that the rep rating system should be changed.
Yeah, the scamming situation really has made the community somewhat paranoid, but for good reason. I remember what it was like when I first came here, and it can definitely feel like you've stumbled upon some gold mine of both hilarity and generosity only to suddenly meet with backlash just because you didn't understand the unwritten rules of the forum.
As Telika pointed out, what do we do? Hide the issues only to sucker-punch the new user with all the forum drama we have, or tell it to the guy point-blank and watch him flee with arms flailing wildly in all directions?
It can only really be fixed by moderation, and GOG has made it painfully clear that they have no intention whatsoever of introducing any, it's just not profitable in any way for them to spend time on it.
That being said, it's undeniable that this place is way better than a lot of other forums out there, though. For all the issues we have, it's still worth staying just for the people here.
