UPDATE: We've added a new option to the Privacy settings in GOG Profiles - from now on you can turn off your profile on GOG entirely, so no one can see any kind of information that is shown on the profile page. This also means that when you turn off your profile, you won’t be visible on your friends’ friends lists, even if they decide to keep their profiles visible.
The option to enable/disable your GOG Profile can be found in your account „Privacy & Settings” options, under „Privacy” tab.

We just introduced a new feature on GOG.COM: User Profiles – a social way to share what you and your friends are up to. See what your friends on GOG are playing, achieving, and sharing across four sections – Feed, Profile, Games and Friends.

Your Feed is the centerpiece of your Profile. Here, you’ll see which games your friends have been playing, all sorts of achievements and milestones, as well as general thoughts, screenshots, and forum activity. You can dispense your approval at whim and share your own stuff as well!

Your Profile is all about you and your gaming accomplishments. It's a summary of your activity, like the time you've spent in your games , your latest achievements (and just how rare they are among other users), as well as a glimpse at what your most active friends have been up to.

If you want to know more about your Games, you need to hit the the third tab. It contains a list of all the games you own on GOG, together with stats like time spent in-game and your progress towards unlocking the achievements. Sort the list, compare stats with your friends, and get some healthy competition going.

Finally – your Friends: get a general summary of their achievements and hours played. Here you'll also see which games are the most popular among your friends right now, so you can join them in multiplayer or find something you might enjoy yourself.

Of course, your profile comes with some sweet personalization options, choose a wallpaper from your game collection and share a few words with the world.

User Profiles are available for all GOG.COM users. Your personal gameplay stats like achievements, time played and milestones depend on GOG Galaxy, but if you’re not using the optional client you can still use the feed, post in it and interact with your friends.

Launching profiles also means adding new privacy settings on our end. You'll find three new Privacy options in your account's „Privacy & settings” area. These settings allow you to set the visibility for your profile summary, your games, your friends, etc.
So what are you waiting for? There's so much room for activities!

buckybit: Somebody (responsible) did not read the new European GDPR privacy law act?
Caution here, IANAL and all that, but the GDPR protects personal information, so there also has to be a way to link the informations back to an individual. I'm not sure what to think about search by email, and there's also the problem of people that used the same nickname on other sites or other contexts, but other than that I can't think of way to do that in general (enlighten me if I forgot something).
So while I think GOG handled the case in a vary bad way (again), it's not totally obvious that what they did is (or will be) illegal.

Please make things like this auto opt-out instead of auto opt-in. You are making decisions for me without my permission. This kind of thing is rubbish and silly for me, but that's beside the point. The point is DO NOT make decisions about my personal information without my express permission.

Yay or nay? (At least) I won't downvote your for "yay". Although this profile stuff is almost the most sh*ttiest introduction of a new feature I've ever experienced. And I've been around in a while. GWX was worse though.

Disclaimer: I actually like the profiles. It's they way they were introduced that was a terrible mess.

I usually never post anything in these forums but this new 'feature' got me angry enough to change that. I care about my privacy and try to avoid disclosing any information about myself. Letting 'everyone' know how many games I own on GOG or how much time I spend in games without my consent is simply a great way to alienate your customers/fan base.

Other people have already explained in great detail why the way this change was introduced was bad so I will not repeat that. I'd only like to let GOG know that you've lost my trust regarding the 'optional' Galaxy client which led me to uninstall it. I'll miss the convenience but how can I be sure the privacy settings in your software actually do what they claim? How can I be sure you're not collecting even more data I don't know anything about? And maybe make that data public too - without my permission, maybe even without me knowing?

I've been a GOG fan and customer for many years but some of the changes over the past few years worry me; this one is just the icing on the cake. You should make sure you're not becoming like Steam or worse. If the Galaxy client ever becomes mandatory you will lose me as a customer. Permanently.

Best regards... (back to lurking and watching and hoping).
Disabled my profile...

Now i got an annoying purple dot... and pages that go nowhere...

Just found out why GOGs communication with the community is so bad. They dont have anybody for it:

https://www.gog.com/work/support-head-of-community-friendship-support

And even better: Once they find somebody we are looking into a bright future of 'friendship'. Quoting:

"Your and your team's ultimate goal is to treat gamers not as 'customers' or 'users’, but as our best friends and having their interest always above everything else."

It might get a bit tough to be the "best friends" of certain gamers simultaneously.

I don't wanna be friends with a corporation. I'll be more than happy with the cold, distant respect of an impersonal customer/service provider relationship.

At least then I won't have to read cringy, awkward passive aggressive temper tantrums in PR speak.
Choosing a wallpaper from the game collection feels very retro. I like it.

The playtime statistics however are completely off as I never used Galaxy that much. Now I look like a fool with 0 hours in all my games :(

Yeah but no Lego Harry Potter and no Leisure Suit Larry option.

Right now I'm using Humans, which I actually don't like game wise, but it's a great wallpaper.

Sure. As long as you were pleased first, yeah, I'm fine with it.

It's cool.

lolplatypus: Edit: Thinking about it, my response here comes across a lot more cuntish than I intended. At no point was any form of personal attack intended and I don't think I've conveyed that adaequatly. I'll leave it up for consistency, but feel free to ignore what basically amounts to "old man yells at clouds" and I apologize for the rather condescending tone.

---

See, the thing about comparisons like that is that they're meant to point out the severity of one component (in this case the maverick attitude towards data sharing, as you've pointed out yourself) by exaggerating another (in this case the sensitivity of the data - though, considering recent events, I am not entirely sure how sound our judgement as laypersons is regarding that matter). This is usually done to demonstrate the point to those who wouldn't get it otherwise (several examples in this thread) and/or to more accurately express one's point of view (in this case the measure of disappointment with the matter at hand). If people got either of those points in the first place, this kind of comparison wouldn't be needed. In fact, it would be completely useless, if it was a 1:1 example, because that would fail to achieve those goals in the first place.

To clarify, you clearly seem to be on top of things, this is not a dig at you in any form, I just more and more feel the urge to point these things out for the sake of my own sanity.
No harm. My response was rather dickish in its own right. Thanks for not taking the piss. :)
