Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

See the outtake from the CD Projekt RED & GOG.com Summer Conference

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

Future_Suture: Is there a release date for Galaxy that I missed? I am still waiting.

PhilbertHFZ: Evidently, you have missed a lot. Galaxy is not just a thing that can be shipped. From what I understand, it is an entire ecosystem. Matchmaking, friends, game downloads, etc. Bits and pieces of the back-end work are already done/being done, and from what I can gather a large part of the effort presently is fixing the download/install system for older titles so that they aren't just one big dumb executable file that has to be downloaded entirely before extracting, which makes patching the titles harder than it needs to be. Especially for larger titles.

I imagine once this has been completed, at least to a sufficient degree, work can begin in earnest on the actual download client. The client, by the way, is what I suspect you meant/implied when you were asking if "galaxy" has released. I suspect it will be the last piece of the puzzle before the system goes live.

SHORT VERSION:
There is no release date because Galaxy is bigger than just a client.
FWIW it *is* just a optional client. Downloader + multiplayer (this being the biggest bit ----- which i would hazard to guess many coming to gog arent that interested in).thats pretty much the gist of it. I dont remember them saying anything about friends .matchmaking or any steam like bs tbh. whats wrong with the current download/install system?. Most regular users are happy with the way it works ie not like steam.

Matchmaking is already there, as was evidenced by The Witcher Adventure Game Beta. Problem with said matchmaking though was that you couldn't arrange for games, unless you created a private one. So the ability to send game invites to specific people would help a lot.
As for the other parts that you don't recall, Destro did mention them in the "Ask us anything" they did on Twitch. Galaxy isn't a downloader/installer, it is much more than that. Tell me if you want the link to the Twitch video.

Like Skynet?

In the Galaxy trailer they clearly say the client will give the option to 'Stay in touch with friends'.

Besides, how else will they see those achievements you collect? ;)

Galaxy is not meant to appeal to 'regular' users (most people on this forum). It's meant to bring new users to GoG. Those are things that users want.
FWIW, they're already putting Galaxy in their installers. At least, I'm assuming they are, since yesterday when Vertical Drop Heroes crashed on me, the popup message said, "The Galaxy client has crashed" and gave options to send crash details to GOG.

lol, Galaxy's making games crash already? ;)

Seriously though. Yeah, it wouldn't make sense to be converting installers to Galaxy ready and still be putting out installers that don't. I assume any new games will already have it and they're working backwards.
EDIT: nevermind

I wasn't paying attention and was making a fool of myself for not having read earlier posts properly.
Thank you for the responses, guys. Seems like Galaxy is a fair way off, which makes me question just how long we were meant to wait for Divinity: Original Sin to arrive on GOG if it was supposed to have been launched with Galaxy.

Its aimed at the multiplayers. And at the same time if it affects the way things work to regular users to their detriment.....there will be a huge backlash like you would never believe.

Fair way off? I'm expecting it within the month. It probably won't be in the final stage, but in beta, but it will be out for everyone.

And do remember, releasing D:OS did remove any time constraints they may have had, so they could take more time to develop Galaxy. If they were to release D:OS with Galaxy, they may have already released it.

I'm not really sure you can say how it's going to affect 'regular' users (whatever that means) considering the thing isn't even out yet.

Many of us much prefer the standalone executables + patches gog does right now. If they just offer auto patching, i will personally kickup a huge shit storm..i wont be the only one.
