Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

See the outtake from the CD Projekt RED & GOG.com Summer Conference

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

synfresh: I'm not really sure you can say how it's going to affect 'regular' users (whatever that means) considering the thing isn't even out yet.

Niggles: Many of us much prefer the standalone executables + patches gog does right now. If they just offer auto patching, i will personally kickup a huge shit storm..i wont be the only one.
Who's 'many of us', the people on these forums? Got news for you, they don't represent the entirety of the GoG userbase, in fact they are just a minority. GoG themselves have said this.

GOG has already said that standalone executable's and patches will remain just like it is now. They have also said they won't get rid of the GOG downloader until that feature is added to Galaxy which may not be right at release, but they did say Galaxy will be able to do that.

Personally, I don't care if they provide standalone executable's or patches at all as long as they give us a backup feature in Galaxy that can pack the files (game files, dlc, and patches) into a DRM free executable. That would probably be more reliable than GOG who may not update as much as Galaxy auto-patching does.

I missed the AvP beta thingy and every time this thread gets bumped I get reminded how much I'm waiting for Galaxy. :(
I don't know if this is the right place to speculate, but does anyone else have a feeling that this will be out still this month? I mean, Witcher Adventure just got out of beta and will be released on November 27... and it uses the Galaxy client, so it wouldn't use the current client, right? It would have to be the final one...

Also, Witcher Adventure will be out right after the fall sale.
Just a coincidence, you say? I beg to differ.
I mean, how is it that ppl are not seeing this? It so obvious! I'm not insane, I'm not paranoid, I swear!

By the way, I don't know if it is possible or not, but does anybody know if Galaxy will have achievements for DOSBox games? Because Steam doesn't, but (I'm just guessing, though) they're the majority here, which means that achievements would be limited to just a handful of games.

It's quite unlikely you'll see achievements for games other than the ones specifically designed to be integrated with GOG Galaxy (so the Witchers, Divinity etc). I don't think you'll see many games retroactively adding it.
Would be great if Galaxy was released this month. I have waited quite a while for a worthy competitor to Steam.
I'm quite disappointed so far with GOG Galaxy. They announced it, but I still don't see anything.
Unfortunately, their delays means I've bought pretty much all the good classics via Steam. If they release it after the winter/Christmas Steam sales week than there's probably nothing left for me to purchase on GOG.

Please, bring us at least a beta or something.

PS
Yes, I didn't buy anything during this week's flash sale because I don't want loose/separate games... I want them in a convenient way like Steam.
They kind of said this year. So at least the possible time window when it will come gets shorter and shorter...

I don't think so, not now. I think there going to release the Witcher Adventure Game with some Galaxy features like the beta, but not the the actual client. Otherwise why release AVP now without Galaxy if it's right around the corner?

Maybe that's exactly why it was "released" now. It was actually already available for everyone that got AvP before, so maybe when they release the final version of Witcher Adventure tomorrow, they will update the AvP to use the new Galaxy client too (it was already using the same launcher before). I just thought that the end of the Witcher beta, the release tomorrow, it being right after the end of the fall sale and now, just adding to it, the release of AvP (that was already available) were all signs of the release of a client for Galaxy, maybe not polished and final and all, but sort of a initial one... and I also saw a chance to do a paranoid post =D

I thought we were getting the client beta before the end of the year?

Future_Suture: Seems like Galaxy is a fair way off,
avatar
JMich: Fair way off? I'm expecting it within the month. It probably won't be in the final stage, but in beta, but it will be out for everyone.
Today is the last day of November. Pity that this did not happen.
So, any news? Leaks, maybe? :-)
