I'd also like to add 'Scum' that Guards would say, walking past me in morrowind.. My fantastic pentium 33mhz MMX, rage 128+ gfx card, and 32MB edo ram, could just about play the game.

Good old days....

[edit] might have been 133mhz, was so long ago.

Self destruct sequence activated.
When I read that, I thought of 'Liberty Prime' for some reason.
The sound effect of my rare frostsaber pet in WoW as she was lunging towards her target full speed ahead. I still think about that rawr almost every day.
Starcraft I Terran Academy:

The famous Wilheim Scream (yes, I actually googled it)!

I could listen to that once per day for soooooo long!!...
The iconic game sound for me will always be the Linking book/teleportation whirr in the Myst series. Completely unearthly, even sinister sound. Hearing that always sends a shiver down my spine.
Quake 2's pistol

A warble in Enemy Infestation (I think it was in the menu.)

These two and a few others I like because every so often I'll hear them in a TV show or movie which reminds me of playing the game.

Also, I've liked the Pac-Man "death" sound (more than the Waka-waka)

Galaga ship shooting sound (brings back so many memories of one of my favorite arcade games)

Finally, the Apple II originals: Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein had simulated voices using the onboard speaker. Kind of groundbreaking at the time.
Most of the "iconic sounds" I can think of are arcade games (Pac-Man's eating noise), Nintendo games (Mario's 1-Up sound, power-up sound, and power-down sound, as well as Zelda's jingle that plays when you solve a puzzle, and the one when you get an item- do those count as music?), or the ring sound from Sonic the Hedgehog.

The only PC sound effect I can really think of that I would recommend is the crackling noise that plays when StarCraft and its sequels show their logo that sounds almost like a protoss structure warping in.
Would have to be TOASTY from MK.
I... AM... SINISTAR!
The last time someone asked a similar question here, my answer was the same...there was this village "background ambiance" sound effect in Geneforge that pops into my head regularly, even though the last time I played the game was still years ago.

Basically just going "na nana na na na"

tinyE: Unfortunately I can't find a sample of it, but can we all agree the original death shriek from 'Abuse' is iconic! XD

Great thread Coolmoke; brilliant idea. :D
The quality is not the best but I think you are looking for this.

adaliabooks: Can't get much more iconic than the serious of kill multiplier sound effects from Unreal Tournament...

M-m-m-m-monster kill!
Nice catch. All the other kill streaks were awesome too. "Holy s***!", "Wicked sick!", ...

Also "Finish Him" and "Fatality" from MK1. Collecting rings in Sonic. The chatter from the shotgun/pipe mutants in SS2...
System Shock 2: the monkey and the zombie.
I thought the zombie said "I'm sorry" sometimes, but I'm not sure.
Icy Tower: Whoopdedoodedoo.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a clip with the black character who would keep yelling "Stayin' alive!"
Do small voice clips count as sound effects?

Licurg: Everything from the first Doom .
This, same opinion.
